Message The increasing need for answers to problems in the realm of the spirit has given added responsibility today to the small Christian college. On the campuses of these colleges for centuries scholars have directed men toward God and thus to the realization of their quest. Today the attack against poverty must also be directed against the poverty facing, not only the body, but the spirit of man. This poverty too can be brought to an end. It is our belief at Campbellsville that we are one of the colleges joined together in the fight against poverty, but a college that must fight this battle on two fronts--against poverty of the physical man and against poverty in the world of the spirit. john M. BRUCE MELVIN, Campbells- ville's widely traveled sociology instructor, has been chosen by the students as the college's most popular professor. Born on an Iowa farm, Dr. Melvin has had a fascinating career centered around rural youth problems. Mrs. Melvin worked as his assistant for five years before they were married in 1940. They have written four books on rural sociology. Dr. Melvin has taught at Ohio Wesleyan, Cornell, and the University of Mary- land. While with the latter school, he helped set up the overseas program in Europe for service men and their families. England, France, Germany, Austria, Trieste, Italy, and Switzerland were some of the countries in which he traveled and taught. Before joining the staff at the Uni- versity of Maryland, he worked in North Africa in foreign relief and rehabilitation. Later he served as a civilian expert with the Army forces of occupation in japan and Korea. Dr. Melvin, the U. S. Army's occupying general, and Korea's governor were the three men charged with guiding the people of Korea. Having joined President Roosevelt's New Deal in 1933, Dr. Melvin did social and economic research, specializing in rural youth, housing, and resettlement problems. After leaving Cornell, he worked in housing and development as an aid under President Hoover and edited one volume of the twelve -volume REPORT OF HOME BUILDING AND HOME OWNERSHIP. Dr. Melvin came to Campbellsville College in 1964 after two years of retirement. During this retirement period the Melvins spent their time writing and lecturing. To become the most popular pro- fessor, one must exemplify ability, knowledge, character, enthusiasm, and preparation. These are just the qualities which Dr. Melvin possesses as 'Q 1 -Q x ,- .'.' Under the direction of Dr. jess Lasley and assisted by Edd Jett, the group gave George Bernard Shaw's PYGMALION as their first semester contribution to college and community enter - tainment. It was one of their best productions. Shaw was famous as a critic of the manners and morals of respectable society. In this play he proposed to show the relationship between a person's attempt to practice his own individuality and the pressures upon him from convention and circumstance. Portraying Shaw's criti- cism of the vain social climber and showing the victory of individuality over social and economic pressures seemed delightfully easy for the Harlequins. The colorful stage setting helped the audience to enter readily into the spirit of this famous five -act comedy. Dr. Jess Lasley Director BELOW: Jim Outhouse administers the make-up. Campbellsville Industries Dreams do come true! .f-'T The future of Campbellsville College is just as bright as our dreams--our vision-- today! President John M. Carter declared at the dedication ceremony. TI-IE NEW INDUSTRIAL BUILDING Qpictured belowj , costing 3570, OOO, was dedicated on December 10. lt was conceived several years ago as a dream of our President to enable outstanding students who come from underprivileged or economically depressed areas and who are financially unable to pay their way to attend college. From 1955 to 1965, 412 students have Worked in the in- dustries building aluminum church spires, church bulletin boards, display racks, etc. Estimated sales since 1965 exceed 5151, OOO, OOO, profit from which not only aids the student-employees but also helps with salary raises for the teachers. Truly this is an unusual and unique type of business. Campbellsville College is a grand success story, and its industrial center is the epitome of free enterprise in action, Mr. W. H. O, College Days! How filled with TOIL you've been! You made us work while others laughed and played, You gave us tasks to do while others slept. You lured us by the rich things that you pledged If we would give to you our Time and Zeal. You charmed us with the treasures of your store And made us covet them. You bade us taste Enchanted food which then addicted all D Our appetite. We found that nothing else Could satisfy. Howe'er, the Toil we gave And Time we spent for them were not in vain. O, College Days! How filled with JOY you've been! We came to you with youthful step, unlearnedg The morning dew was fresh upon our eyes. You breathed your warm and sunny breath about Our lazy lids inviting us to open Them and see. You unlocked fast-closed doors And let us peep in rapt amazement at The worlds we had not seen before. You lifted Off the veil that covered common things And showed the glittering jewels underneath. With magic wand you touched our finite eyes 'And gave us glimpses of the Infinite-- We held our breath and could not speak for awe, As on the canvass of the sky you showed The priceless painting God Himself had done. I O, College Days. O, Days of TOIL and JOY, How swift you've passed and gone, how shallow we Have drunk from out your Cup of Knowledge! But many are the tender flowers we've plucked That grew within your garden's fertile soil And by the gate that opens Memory Lane. --L. D.
