VVe are glad that he has one more year with us. CRIT HARMON Tarlelf' Here is a fellow who got started on his athletic career rather late in life, but in e-pite of that he has made wonderful progress. Crit gave his best for the team at all times. He is the type of fellow that will do any team good to have around. VVe don't know whether his wife will let him play now or not. He has an- other year in school. BRUCE VVAYNE Ren Guard . Bruce, though a freshman in high school, has completed two years of stellar ball for the Garnet and Gray. He has sevcral more years with us and we hope that he will stay them all. We believe that he will be a real star before his school career closes, if he only aspires to such. He sometimes wonders why certain teams are scheduled, but we hope he gets over that some day. DICK SAN DERS Guard Though light, DICK has played two years of monogram ball for the Panthers. He is a fighter from the start to the finish. VVe hope that he will enter college next year and will carry on for us on the gridiron as well as in his scholastic work. CECIL RISEN Halfllafk Inability to practice regularly kept Cecil from being a real star this year. He is fast and runs hard. He has plenty of nerve and loves football- two very important factors for any success- ful player to possess. He has one more year, and with a few obstacles removed we predict he will be one of our best. MARSHALL LYON Center In playing his first year Marshall did very creditable work. He got into but few games, but we look for him to be the regular center next year. He has the will and the determin- ation that we feel sure will get him there. Work and plenty of it will make this fellow. BUFORD KNIFLEY End If hard work can make a football player Buford will be one of the best in the land some- day. He has improved steadily in his playing for the last two years, and we feel that he is graduating a little too soon, otherwise he would become a real star. His weight is one of his greatest handicaps. BRANDFORD MURLEY Fullback Murley's inability to get in the peak of con- dition held him back all season. He can run low and hard which makes him hard to tackle and stop. He has the qualities necessary for a real fullback. We hope that he will stay in school another year. EDWARD DICKEY End Sickness and a bad ankle kept Edward from being at his best most of the season, but with another year to play our prediction is that he will bear watching. He has great possibilities and is of a temperament that makes working with him a pleasure. I mum' if A fi M' HM W V6 g n f ' ' ' ll ' fijil FA W1 Football Season 1928 VVith the opening of school September 11th, the next most natural thing was that of getting football practice under way. On the 12th, some twenty-five fellows reported, which represen- ed the best manhood that Campbellsville College affords. The prospects for a winning team were very poor at the outset, the squad being composed very largely of men with one year's experience or none at all, which is a big problem for any individual or group of individuals to solve. Those of little experience, around which the team had to be constructed were: Borders, Captain, Rexroat, Sprowles, Colvin, Wayne, Risen, lxlurley, Harmon, Sanders and Knifley. Of the new men, Hord, Dickey, Smith, Gardner, Lyon and Burkholder were the best. Everyone both old and new on the squad soon found himself in great earnestness in trying to build for Campbellsville College her best team, The spirit of co-operation and old light that characterizes all the Garnet and Gray teams was soon running high and it was then becoming apparent, that the school would be represented by a bunch of real fellows on the gridiron for the season of '28, Borders soon drew the center assignment, being very ably supported by Rexroat, Gardner, and Harmon, in the tackle positions, with Wayne and Sanders in the guard role, and Sprowlcs, Dickey and Knifiey holding down the end positions. In the backfield Hord was soon found to be the man around which the others would Work. Early in the season he proved a good field general, and in many cases bore the brunt of carrying the ball, being helped by Murley and Risen-which composed a good trio of ball toters a trio that was hard to stop at all times, with Smith and Colvin in the blocking positions-which are essential to any offensive style of football. The first game on October Sth-with St. Joseph's College in Bardstown was a typical early season game, fumbles being the high light of the struggle so far as we were concerned. Our boys learned much about football though, and in most every case as a man or team we profited by it. This was evident in the next game-two weeks later when Lebanon came to the local field. Lebanon had decisively beaten a much crippled team of ours the year before, so the Panthers went into this game with a revenge uppermost in their minds. After sixty min- utes of real football, we were crowned the winner, by a point margin. The following week found us on foreign soil again. This time in Springfield. Starting with a savage offensive attack two touchdowns were scored in the first quarter, and then by playing a defensive game we were on the long end of a 13-12 victory. This being a very hard fought game throughout as the score would indicate. On November 2nd the Kentucky School for the Deaf came to Campbellsville for the third time in three years. The two previous years we had been beaten once and tied by this crowd, as they always have a good team. At the last minute some of our men were declared ineligible due to grades, but after Il great pep rally this handicap was overcome and spirit and scrap caused the Garnet and Gray to run roughshod over the Dummies. The victory being the fourth straight win. By the time the Dummies had been disposed of everyone was beginning to pull for an all victory season which was quite possible, yet there remained two games on the schedule-both to be played away from home. The Eastern Kentucky State Teachers' College Freshman threw a bomb into the machine tho! On November 16th in Richmond we were defeated by two touchdowns. ln this game we wfere outweighed several pounds to the man-and the score was against us, but the Panthers outfought their opponents in every department of the game. One or two very bad breaks proved to be the deciding factors and just the margin for victory. On Thanksgiving Day, in a sea of water and mud besides being in Columbia, we met and were defeated by the Lindsey-Wilson College team. The season was successful in every way, financially, development physically, develop- ment morally, and in terms of games won and lost, etc. We are only hoping for more men and men with a little experience, yet the same spirit of fight and stick-to-it-tive-ness will put us thru, the 1929 season. ' With such men as Kirtley, Bailey and others from the high school squad coming up-we hope for a greater team next year. On December 2 the call was sounded. From the forty-five boys and girls who responded to this call the four teams were selected. In the two college teams there were very few of the old players, so it was evident that new faces would very largely represent the college de- partment. The graduation of Owen Jeffries and Marshall Marcum, and the failure of Captain Grider to return until mid-year left the boys' team in a much weakened condition. The same thing was true of the girls' team, Captain Sanders being the only player of last year that had returned. Practically all of the new members were of the ambitious type, but with- out experience. Dickey, Colvin, and Peyton were the only ones that had seen: service. The girls' team, composed of Captain Sanders, Gaunt, Miller, Gabbert, N. Bertram F. Bertram, and Elrod, worked into a very good team before the season was over, winning as many games as they lost. Among the defeats was one at the hands of the strong Eastern Kentucky Normal, but only by a few points. The Panthers were not so successful in terms of victories, as they lost more games than they won, yet they showed steady improvement throughout the season and some of the most awkward and the greentst at the outset were playing good ball at the close of the season. Acting as Captain, Rexroat was the bulwark of the team for the first half of the season, then came Grider. By this time Colvin and Dickey were going much better, so with these four the Garnet and Gray had a fairly good working quartet. The high school teams were the bright lights of our basketball this season. Though the boys' team was composed of all new men except the two veterans, Captain Bailey and Kirtley, the new fellows, Faulkner, Pardo, Blackaby, Banta, Coakley, and Newcomb, worked in very nicely. This combination gave to the college the best team she has had for a number of years. Fifteen games were Won and' Seven were Lost. Six of the present team will be lost through graduation. We are wondering what we shall do next year. The high school girls' team was the only team of veterans in the school, being composed of Captain Stiles, Wells, Banta, Harding, and the new ones-Helton, Ferguson, Mitchell, VVilson, Smith, and Wood. Of the regulars Stiles and Helton were forced from the line-up early in the season by flu complications, but in spite of this the team was vfictorious in Twelve of the Sixteen games. Had this piece of hard luck not hit our team we feel sure that we should have represented this district and region in the state tournament, as we had beaten the team that did win bcfore our two players had to stop. VVith all the team returning next year except Banta, who graduates, we hope for better results and believe that we shall get them. The season's summary for all teams was Thirty victories and Nineteen defeats. The group wishes the College to be able to depend on it for i fn its full support in making the Campus life more Christian, and the atmosphere betterg and that tl each individual may feel in every member a real friend. , l- The Association has weekly meetings with varied programs for the purpose of further , N, developing the individual members: each month the Taylor County Ministers' Association 3 meets with the College Ministers, thereby making the fellowship richer and the desires greater. 1 beveral prominent speakers have come our way during this present season. U -i 1 l lu it 5 Q - - 3 gl t Young Women s ASSOClat1OH 1 . i The Y. W. A. was organized again this fall, and again Miss Ruth Arnett was selected as ' I i the Counselor. Many things have arisen to hinder the advancement of this organization as ' it should advance. At Christmas the girls were interested in playing Santa Claus to some , -f mountain- children. Quite a nice box was sent to these less fortunate children. It seems that g Q , there should be a place in our program for the Y. W. A. and we sincerely hope we can do i, something to increase the interest next year. i . I . , The B. s. U. ! A l E i ' The B. S. U. is doing bctter work than at any time in its history. The attendance has been good all year, and the programs are interesting. Four of our members attended the meeting in Georgetown. They returned enthusiastic over the work of the organization. Mr. , CliHord Hutchinson, one of our ministerial students, is president. He is capable, interested, and X always present. The group captains have been faithful in preparing interesting and helpful , programs. 4 5 ti V l flilil, I PACE 66 - .lg A pil -rg , , f-It 1a lli 1, I l ...et l'?'24Q . - . A Vision This morning, as in slow and meditative steps, I wended my way along The Maple Trail toward the home of the Garnet and Gray, my attention was suddenly arrested by the early morn- ing breeze lisping thru the branches of the great maple trees in low and gentle whispers. At first I thought 'twas only the grumbling of the passing winds at being so unduly disturbed and hindred in their hurried Flightg but upon closer observation, as my attention became more acute, as my thoughts became more concentrated, as my interest became more intent, I clearly saw that, instead of the supposed grumbling, the gentle breeze was delivering in ethereal lan- guage the high and lofty and noble ideals for which Campellsville College has stood from the very hour of her birth. In response to each low whisper, some tiny twig with an indellible impression would record the worthy message in order that all who might pass that way, and would but pause to look up, should know the true spirit of The Maple Trail as incorporated therein. With a deepened interest and with aroused emotions, I determined to know of this great spirit. l lifted my eyes. I read. There in exquisite beauty as though written by the hand of an artist, appeared these terms, service for God toward mankindg love for the beautiful and the good in literature, in art, yea, in every thingg untainted honor, unswerving loyalty, strength and purity of character, patriotism for one's countryg and Christian education and all that in- cludes. And then glaring in the light of the morning sun there blazed forth in shining, flash- ing letters this great challenge 1-It is a great thing to die for a noble ideal, but is a far greater thing to lifve for one. - My thoughts had turned to deeper thoughts. My reasoning had now become productive. 'lSurely , said I, An institution with such ideals, and with a student body striving toward their attainment, by the help of God, could never be forced to lay down her arms by any power whether on the earth or under the earth. Such a spirit is unconquerable. It knows no defeat. Such a spirit is immortal. It lives on and on for ever. As for me, never in the years to come shallimy eyes drink of the beauty of the pages of the College Annual of '29 except these ideals of the dear old Alma Mater shall vividly pre- sent themselves again to meg for When I am old and my hands are weary, When my eyes are 'void of sight, Still this spirit will be present To guide me through the darksome night. The ideals of the Alma Mater, High and lofty, can not fail: For they are spirits undying, The spirit of The Maple Trail. -ORTIE BRADSHAW PAGE 78 xl'-ll' 5 ei ' , -G -4- ff . ,F-ff as .. ' at U gf.
