HENDERSON Coach Henderson, a product of Mississippi State University, came to us two years ago after having had four successful years coaching at Pineville, Kentucky. While a student, he made an honorable record for himself, and for his Alma Mater. A great part of our school's premier success in athletics has been due to his superb leadership and his excellent code of sportsmanship, which has ever proved an inspiration to those under his tutelage. OVVEN JEFFRIES CAPTAIN QL'fXRTP2I!B.XL'K Jeff, as he is known to us on the foot- ball held and on the campus, has been an out- standing athlete for us so long that we hate to think of his graduation. Twice captain of the Panther Pack of football fighters, he always led his team in great style, and gave to them and to those that are to follow a fighting team spirit that will long be re- membered. VVe all wish for Jeff the suc- cess in life that he has made in athletics for his Alma Mater. GATTON KIRTLEY ALTERNATE CAPTAIN END Kirtley, still in the High School Depart- ment, has played two years of stellar foot- ball for the colors. He is a natural athlete and one who gives his best all the time. His good qualities as a football player and as a man are many, and we predict great things for him in the future. Some of the best men of the previous season were missing, and those that had returned were inexperienced and exceedingly light. Captain Jeffries, of the 1926 squad, was practically the only man of any experience. Such men as Joe VVilson, Cameron XVilson, and Bob Borders. all great football players, weren't to be replaced so easily in the minds of the football enthusiasts, or in the held, for around these men the recent teams had been constructed. ln the fate of all this, those interested, directly or indirectly, went about the task of building a new machine that could carry the Garnet and Gray through another successful season. The first call for practice was issued soon after the enrollment was completed, and some thirty-three men reported with determination, and plenty of grit, and soon the lighting spirit was permeating through the squad which carried them through the season in line style. The squad was composed of three letter men from the previous season, but all the other men had had little or no experience. Captain Jeffries, of the 'Zo team was reelected Captain of the '27 team and, as before. proved an eliicient leader--one that could always be relied upon to play a good game and lead his men as a captain should. Kirtley and Mitchell were the other left- overs that added to the nucleus around which the team was constructed. Greenncss was the outstanding quality of the squad, but as grass fadeth away, this was soon fading too, and with such men as Risen, Bailey and Sprowles, of the 'Zo second teamg Rexroat and Grider, neither ever having seen a game: Knifley, Cole. Colvin, Sanders, Murley and Nance who had never played before and had seen very few games: Red Russell, who had played in past years, but not recently: and XVayne, the Sth grader, the Panther Pack progressed. Rapidly the squad reduced to son'e twenty-two iellows, and these hue boys and men and anxious foot- ball aspirants carried the colors of Canipbellsville College through the season with THREE VICTORIES, TXYO T112 GAMES, and TXYO DFFIQATS, The season's hrst game was with St. Mary's College, played in a sea of mud, a new experience for the fellows in two ways: tirst, their tirst game: second, the mud, itself. The game was a complete surprise to most people and our team won easily. This gave the team confidence. and from this time on. they had the spirit that is necessary for any sport. St. Mary was also our second opponent, playing on foreign soil, and this game resulted in a tie. Almost beaten, the game seemed lost until, in the last tive minutes, Jeffries made a nice gain off tackle, putting the pigskin over for the Panthers. The passing combination of Jeffries to Mitchell was the high spot of this game. The team journeyed to Bowling Green for their third game where the Xliestern Freshmen were encountered. The Freshman team, being composed of eight former high school captains and several other stars, proved too much for us, and we were beaten decisively. Following this the team was re-arranged in order to play a strictly high school game with Bardstown in which the high school boys won alone by one touchdown. Bailey, at quarter in this game, showed his generalship, and is being relied upon to till the place of this year's graduate quarter- back. On Armistice Day we had as our guests and opponents our ancient rival, Lindsey XVilson College, in the big game of the year. The Panthers went in to do or die, and well they did- without dying. XYhen the tire died down and the smoke cleared away, Campbellsville people went away saying, That n as the greatest football we have ever seen, either locally or else- where. The score 13-12 well indicates what the fans were treated to. A week later came the Danville Dummies, but their playing showed anything but a handicap, and the game ended in a tie. By this stage of the season, our casualty list was getting pretty high. but in the last game the tightin ' Garnet and Gray carried on in the best way possible. VVe met Lebanon High on Thanksgiving Day with a bunch of fellows in need of the atmosphere of a hospital instead of a football held, and we were beaten by a big score. The season is over, though, and the injuries have healed, and the boys are already looking forward to the 1928 season with great anticipations. The following men were given letters: Captain Jeffries, Alternate Captain Kirtley, Mitchell, Bailey, Harmon, Russell, Colvin, Rexroat, Grider, XYayne, Nance, Risen, Sprowles, Knifley. Cole, Murley and Sanders. Our enrollment is suhticient to support four teams, hut it doesn't give either team much reserve strength. VVe could conihine high school and college teams and strengthen both. hut the present method seems to he more satisfactory as more get a chance to represent the school in the contests. Basketball practice was started immediately after Thanksgiving and the teams had to he conditioned in a hurry in order to he ready for the early games, the first being llecemher llth. For the college hoys, li ' the onl left over from the Tornado Five of the preceding season. He was quickly elected Jeffries was l y - I captain and went about his duties doing what he could to give the tiarnet and tiray the hest team possihle. Most people were somewhat discouraged with the outlook, but with a Rexroat and a lirider in the new material, and with Marcum, Cole, Knitley, and Berryfall newcomers--the task of huilding a combination that could represent us on the floor was started. Jeffries played great hall all the way through, and deserves much credit for the showing of the team. Rexroat and Grider, soon after the season opened, were good running mates for Jeff, and around these three fellows the team was constructed. The entire squad played as a manithe thing that is necessary for team play at all times, Such teams as Cumberland Vollege and Lindsey VVilsou were met and defeated. XVe lost to Centre Freshmen hy a close score, .ls we did to lini- versity of Louisville Freshmen. Twelve games were played, of which eight were won. The college girls Came forth with lots of punch and vim, too, to give the tiarnet and tirayi followelrs Y t l thrill after thrill in winning ball games. Prewitt and Leitch were the lettered girls of the season we ore,, ie latter being captain of the '28 team. From the Freshman Class we drew Sanders, lidwards and llord trom the local county high school. All having had experience of one or two years, it was soon evident that they would be of great value to our team. Sanders at back guard and Edwards at floor guard gave to the team a type of guarding rai'ely seen in girls' basketball. Edwards was the leading scorer for the team. llord and Prewitt and Ford, as forwards, could he relied upon to play consistently, as did Leitch at center. The other members of the squad were Durham, graduation, Prewitt, Ford, Leitch. and Taylor County Ili, Lehanon Hi, and and one tied. Taylor, and Mrs. Taylor. Four of the members are lost through Mrs. Taylor. The games played were with Greensburg, lolumhia Hi, Lindsey Nvilson College. ttf these games seven were won. two lost. The high school hoys seemed the best prospective squad in the heginning of the season. Such men as Captain Kirtley, Bailey, Sprowles, Risen. Colvin and Mitchell were the nucleus around which a winning combination must be built. Little other material came to us. so we had to he content with small numbers, small men, but men of ability. This is the second year of haskethall for all the fellows, but most of them have played like veterans a greater part of the season. The team started with a rush, winning six straight games, and was showing no sign of letting up in the least, when an injury or two -and an epidemic of sickness all lillt wrecked the team. We were forced to play with substitutes in some games which went to the opponents hy small scores. One of the high spots of the season was a one point victory over the Columbia team, their first home defeat in three years. Such teams as Lehanon and Greensburg were heaten with ease when we were going good. The Taylor County High game proved a great drawing card, and was one of the best games of the season, our hoys fighting their way to a one point margin. after having trailed their heavier opponents all the way through. The T.C.H.S. team. having beaten us in the first game by a small score, made this game all the more thrilling. The entire Panther-t'uh machine worked well, The team is composed of fellows that are out there giving their best for the team and the school all the time. lf one could he called a star, all could, as the ahility of the squad was evenly divided. Eight games were won and three were lost. Kirtley, Bailey and Mitchell are left for another year, around whom are our hopes for another great season. Although the high school girls with the lowest percentage of games won and lost, they were bv no means our poorest team. To stai't with were several lettered girls of the previous season, this being' their second year at basketball. VVells, Stiles, Liaunt, Bell, Seidell, and Turner formed the hackhone of the team, and with the addition of Banta, Harding and Furgerson, the squad fought through the season. In the early games the team could not get to going just right for some reason, yet it fought and played more or less on equal terms with all opponents. Soon the players hit their stride, however. and were practically unbeatable. Of the last five games played, foui' of them were won after hard tights. The Columbia team falling twice hefore our attack, the Lehanon team being beaten on their Hoor hy a double score after having doubled the score on us on our own tloor earlier in the season. The fast T.C'.H.S. combination, thought by many to he the best in the district. was turned hack hy a double score. The season's record was six games won and tive lost. VVe expect all of the team hack next year except Gaunt and Turner and we want these two to be promoted to the college squad, as they graduate from high school this session. The tournament was held in Columbia March lst, 2nd, and 3rd, It was quite a disappointment to the followeis of the Garnet and Gray, as the hoys should have won the B Division championship with room to spare. For some reason, possibly over confidence and failure to he in the hest condition, the tournament proved their downfall. The Panthers drew Summer Shade in the tirst round and nosed out their opponents 22-20. Everyone expected the hoys to surely come hack in the next game, hut our next game was played the 2nd day, and we were heaten hy Marrowhone Hi. The C. C. followers were given plenty of thrills by the College Hi girls. Thev got right down to business and played basketball. They entered their first game with Russell Springs, determined to win in the first round of the girls' B Division. Russell Springs and Greensburg were both contenders for the title, but our girls won over hoth teams, hy scores of 14-8 and 12-S respectively. XYe were then beaten in me finals by T.C.H.S. 15-2. We won the right to the Regional a week later and we were defeated hv XVoodburn by a score of 12-S. The hoys' team won the trophyhfor making the highest percentage of attempted free thi-OWS in the tournament. Mary Wells won the prize for being the most valuable girl to her team in the meet. EDITORIAL NVe feel, as we send this first volume of the Garnet and Gray to the publishers, that the student body of this instituition is raising the standard of their Alma Mater to a much higher degree. Throughout the period of work on this annual, the splendid cooperation of the stu- dents, with the reliable aid of the faculty, has shown what loyalty to a school cause can pro- mote, This first volume will probably seem very small and disproportionate to the future student body of the College. However, if it will serve the purpose of paving the way for a bigger and better Campbellsville College and a deeper and more abiding love for the Garnet and Gray, we shall feel that our work has not been in vain. -THE STAFF PAGE 68 mph ,Afirarfiun 5 H1 fk,J L-DNCN D Q x E fn 'Lf '? 3 K J Auf'-c is 'Q l K X I K EllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllIlllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllHIIIIWIHIWQIXBWIIllllllIIIlllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllll IIIIBE I1 G- ,- Student Body Celebrltles It 1s wlth rcat pleasure that the nmeteen twenty 61 ht Garnet and Gray Staff presents for your ap proval the wmners of the first Campbellsvllle Colle e Student Body Contest Vlrss REBECCX GALET Prettlest Gmrl MR JAMFS BAILFX Most Handsome Mfm Miss IXILLIE JAMI'b B1-LL Most Popular Glrl MR On EN JEPTRIF5 Most Popular Man Mrss RLTH HAQRLEY May Queen ' Maud-of-Honor E : Mrss BERNICE NoE ....................,............. - Cheer Leader MR.
