'WX QQ ff? .7 , 4- Q Lf : Q -gn' X TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS of the szzuroa crass OF 1948 On a bright fall morning in early September, 1944, the most intelligent class ever to enter Campbellsvllle High School marched into C H S chapel with great expectations for the four years ahead The Freshman sponsors Mrs Howard Rice and Mr Paul Coop, had a trying time getting the new class organ ized At last the class officers were elected with that great Republican figure of state, Jimmie Secrest, as President, assisted by Charlie McKinle Vice-President, and Jane Allen Vaughn, Secretary and Treasurer To keep this meek group of students in order Dick Shaw was elected Sargeant at Arms Class colors were pruple and white, class flower, the red rose At the C H S Carnival the Freshman olaax showed its superior quality by sponsoring the booth whose proceeds were more than that of any other booth We puffed out our chests with pride when Frances Helen Smith was chosen from the Freshman class as cheerleader for the basketball team We completed our first thrilling year in high school by combining our forces land our finances! with the Sophomores in a hilarious picnic at Blue Hole on Robinson Creek Determined to live down the name of 'Silly Sophomores we returned to school the fo1low1ng year with an attitude of 'less study and more play H fWe soon changed our minds J The unanimous choice for Sophomore President was Billy Tapsoott Other officers were Vice President Jimmie Secrest, Vaughn, and muscular Bob Chandler as Sargeant at Arms Aqua and white were chosen as Sophomore class colors and the daisy as the class flower Our most able sponsors for our Sophomore year were Mrs Robert Deener and Mr J R Hayes. The Sophomore Claes was honored by having two of its members chosen as cheerleaders the new choice being Martha Graves, with Frances Smith re elected Ne also took great pride in having elected ae Queen of the C H S Carnival, the Sophomore Candidate, Martha Graves For our last get together as Sophomores, we enjoyed a picnic with our sponsors at Green River AS Jo-lly Juniors we started eff with a bang! As we have always fggpectld law and order we again had to elect class officers as follows 0 , O yn I II Secretaryw-Betty Carol Chelfg Treasurer-Martha Graves, Historian-Jane Allen Continued President-Billy Burke Wilcoxson, Vice-President-Charles McKinley, Secretary- Martha Graves, Treasurer-Billy Tapscott and ntinyu Louis Beard to see that we d1dn't become too jolly. Our class colors were green and white, and class flower, the red rose. Our Junior sponsors were Miss Virginia Buchanan and Miss Norma Raybourne. The Juniors began their major activities in January, 1947 by presenting a chapel program which was truly a masterpiece This production was based on the music of Hogey Carmichael featuring nHong Kong Blues 'Ole Buttermilk yn, and H tardust' Our next dramatic production was the annual Junior Play, 'Miss Blue Eyes ' the only musical comedy ever produced at Campbellsville High School Leading characters were Emeline Eads, Billy Burke uilcoxscn, Donald wllkinson, and Billy Tapscott, supported by Frances Helen Smith, Betty Carol Chelf, Mary Martha Chandler, Shirley Ellis, Dorothy Bault, Beatrice Mahan, Jane Allen Vaughn, Charlie McKinley, Dick Shaw and Nathan Wilson Accompanist Phyllis Beard and the Junior girls chorus completed the cast After the close of the basketball season the Annual Class Basketball Tournament Jas held Under the able coaching of Jimmie Secrest, the Junior team won a smashing victory The Junior Class gave the Seniors of '47 an 6lab0rHt6 banquet at the close of school in May Decorations represented circus Hbig top complete with clown, Kenneth Spratt After a grueling day of preparations every one was worn to a frazzle, but promptly at seven o cloc each member of both the Junior and Senior Classes w s present in his nbest bib Calvary near Lebanon was rained out and e returned through a small flood eat our picnic lunch in the Home Economics Department at the High School On September 3, 1947, we entered upon the ncrowning gloryn of our school days Seniors at last! The responsibility for directing the affairs of the Senior Class rested upon the shoulders of Jim ie secrest,President, Vice President, Billy Tapscott, Secretary, Phyll 3 Beard, Treasurer, Betty Carol helf, and our able and experienced sponsor, Mrs R L Campbell 'lass colors of gold and white and clnss flo1er, the purple iris, made a beautiful combination ll I 7 Sk S '. Gontinued we again 'led the p rade by electing our beautiful blonde candidate, Phyllis Beard, as fueen of the C H Carnival Donald Wilkinson was chosen as a most handsome Prince Charming In order to publish an annual worthy of the senior Class we engaged in a magazine selling campaign The division of the cl ss into two teams aw the fighting Martins outsell the feuding McCoys Lawrence villiams proved to be the best salesman in the class with a sales record of one hundred twenty nine dollar For this excellent work Lawrence received a portable radio In December the senlor Clas presented a thrilling three act mystery entitled The Red Spider, which brought many favorable comments from the public This professional play starred Emeline Eads, Mary Martha Chandler cast consisted of Betty arol Chelf, Anna Mae Kearnes, Charlie McKinley, Jimmie Secrest, and Jane Allen Vaughn Following the Christmas Holidays the class vas besieged by that puffed up invader, Mr Mump Members of the Nump Club included, in order of their acceptance, Janice Nance, M rjorie Clark, Jean Hedgespeth, Billy Tapscott Shirley Fllis, Billy Burke ilcoxson, Charlie McKinley, and Donald Nilkinson After four thrilling years we all agree that ours is indeed, a Nhistory maning clas C W YOU IMAGIIV Louis Beard with long wavy hair?
