;:rv»» iii ' !?«S ' 3 -y4 A university is a group of buildings, many millions of dollars, desks, chairs, student union, bookstore and many other things, but most of all it is people. The people are what make Campbell what it is today. Implicit in this old Latin motto, To the stars through difficulty, are ideas, aims and objectives that have guided this institution through an everchanging character. Campbell was founded in 1887 by James A. Campbell, who was succeeded by his son, Leslie H. Campbell, who served the college for fifty-six years as instructor, administrator and president. Campbell rose from a community school of sixteen students to a great Southern academy in 1887 which later evolved into a two-year institution. Other evidences of growth are additional structures of learning: Pearson Hall, James A. Campbell Administrative Building, and D. Rich Memorial, all of which followed the first building, Kivett Hall. This building that once contained the student recreation area, college bookstore, and several classrooms and offices now houses the School of Law. The law school graduated its first class in May of 1979. Graduate programs in Business Administration and Education have also been added. On June 6, 1979, Campbell College reached another milestone; Campbell was no longer a college but a University . . . and the changes keep coming.
