' The year 1977 marked another milestone in the outstanding history of Campbell ' s sport curriculum — the creation of the first ever women ' s Softball team. Successful and exciting are two of the adjectives which describe that first team as they compiled an impressive season record of 16-5. With leadership from Darrell Saunders and outstanding performances from Wanda Watkins, Connie Hall and Barbara Foxx, the girls won the Methodist College Tournament and easily defeated opponents which included UNC-W, Meredith, Carolina and Pembroke State. In the State Tournament the women lost in the quarter-finals to Appalachian State by the heartbreaking score of 10 to 9. Fourteen members is an adequate number for a basketball, golf, or tennis team. But the roster for a successful track squad, usually runs a bit deeper. However, fourteen was all that participated m the f 1977 track season. Quality was there though as half of Q the squad had a hand in setting new records in running events. David . Murr, Lowered the 800 | meter dash time with a 1:56.0. James Bolden, Mike Rainer, Demps Pettway and Will Heckstall 3 set a new Spring Medley Relay time of 3:36.5. Murr, f Pettway, Ricky Cooper and , David Haynes bettered the Q two mile relay mark with a 8:08.6. Also numerous indoor track records were - set. I Results of the 1977 season . were strong as the team | finished no lower than second in all but two Q meets. golf Rising to the occasion could best describe the exploits of the 1977 Golf team. Higher than expected scores in fall tournaments left serious doubts in the minds of team members. The potential was there and they knew it. The season began to turn around midway through the spring slate when scores began to lower as the temperatures began fo rise. The District Tournament proved successful as the Jim Bromley — led linksmen finished first. This earned the Camels a berth in the National NAIA Tournament in Minnesota after a years ' lay-off. Peaking at the right time, the golfers finished 5th in the Nation. Jim Bromley walked away from the field, winning the individual medalist title.
