Four years out of your life. Whether you want to think about Campbell that way or not, that ' s what it amounts to — or does it? Was it more than just a period of time? Or was it less than the most valuable learning experience anyone could hope to achieve? Or was it somewhere between the two? If you are graduating now, you entered college in or around 1974. Then you knew where you were going and what you were going to do. Now you know neither. You came to a place that was rural — maybe even remote. You couldn ' t leave because there was no gas in the pumps. Nixon had just resigned and Watergate was finally dwindling down. Jimmy Carter was still a peanut farmer in Georgia. You stayed here. You anguished through the United States pullout in Vietnam. You watched intently as the Patty Hearst soap opera unfolded. And you stayed here. Of course transferring was an option but something made you remain — fondness for friends, respect for parents, lack of qp. ' s, etc. There were a few big things you disliked like curfew or chapel, but there were many little things you did like. This became your point of reference, your home away from home. You became more interested in Campbell, more aware of the changes. Brick walkways increased, a golf course appeared. The soccer team went to the national tournament and basketball was definitely on the upswing. The positives outweighed the negatives. So you came back for the bicentennial year. You were probably tired of all the red, white, and blue commercialism. You were amazed at Elizabeth Ray and the Washington sex scandals. Yet, your American pride was bolstered by the Olympic basketball and boxing teams. You marveled at Nadia Comaneci. You survived Legionnaire ' s Disease and maybe even wrote a Howard Hughes ' will. On campus, a swimming pool appeared and curfew disappeared. Classes became more interesting. They were preparing you for life. They had relevance. Besides you had gained a status in life that many others had not — seniorhood. So you came back one last time. Not to the same Campbell College you came to as a freshman, (the one they called U.C.L.A. — University of Campbell between Lillington and Angler), but to a bigger Campbell College. This Campbell had law and graduate programs, was a basketball power, had attained N.C.A.A. status, but was still the same small, friendly school you had come to love and respect in four years out of your life. This is your book. I hope you find yourself on one of the following pages. If not, I hope you find some of your friends. But most of all, I hope you find what you have found in the last four years — I hope you find Campbell.
