Dedication Mrs. Alma Sams Kennedy What isn ' t connected with English? is a quote that typifies the spirit of Mrs. Alma Ken- nedy. Upon joining the staff at Campbell in 1955, Mrs. Kennedy began making immediate contributions to the English Department and student populus. The teaching experience was far from new to her as she had been teaching in a number of elementary and high schools as well as Brevard College since 1930. Not only a teacher herself, for a number of years Mrs. Kennedy headed the teacher education program for the English Department. As a teacher ' s teacher she influenced not only the lives of her students but the lives of hundreds of their stu- dents. How do you teach english to someone who sees it as incomprehensible symbols and sounds? This is a task that faces Mrs. Kennedy each year as she teaches English for the foreign students. Armed with patience, grammar, voc- abulary and superhuman understanding, she helps break through the language barrier. Seeing the task of a teacher as more than that of lecturer, she has contributed to the growth process of her students both in and out of the classroom. For a number of years Mrs. Kennedy has helped Memorial Baptist Church become a vital force in the lives of Campbell ' s Interna- tional Students. Helping to alleviate culture shock has become her speciality. The English Club has also been guided and at time sustained by the wisdom, wit, and charm of Mrs. Kennedy. Weathering student teaching presidents, new constitutions and numerous fund raising projects, Mrs. Kennedy has di- rected the club in a positive and non-dictatorial manner. As an advisor, she lives up to her title by advising, never ruling or dominating. In the school year 1969-1970, she added to her other list of duties the job of acting head in the English Department. During this year, she also taught five hours of English for foreign students, three hours of Milton and supervised the student teachers. For a number of years her responsibilities in- cluded direction of the school ' s summer pro- gram in English for college preparatory students, as well as acting as campus coordinator for stu- dents in the Federal Careers Opportunities Pro- gram. In 1971, Mrs. Kennedy received Excellence in Teaching awards at Campbell College. The awards were recognition for high proficiency in teaching, excellence in teacher-student relation- ships and varied contributions to college and community. For her love for the student body and the ex- cellence she exemplifies in all her relationships at Campbell and in the community, the staff proudly dedicates the 1977 Pine Burr to Mrs. Alma Sams Kennedy.
