Lonnie D. Small Business Manager In the middle of his sixteenth year of coaching basketball, teaching and directing athletics at Campbell, Fred McCall was draft ed to serve in a new administrative role — Vice-President in charge of Institutional Development. The accumulated record of wins and losses, the countless miles covered in representing Campbell, the never-waning enthusiasm for the positive thrust of the college ' s purposes and programs, the more than adequate evidence of good administrative principles and use of sound business practices, the embodiment of excellent character, personal warmth and imaginative promotion — all of these indicators, and others, point to a productive and fruitful tenure in his new assignment. Someone has called keeping the budget of a private college out of the red the world ' s trickiest high-wire balancing act. For the past eighteen years Campbell ' s high-wire artist extraordinary has been Business Man- ager Lonnie D. Small, who learned his art through studying business at Wake Forest College and attending special summer insti- tutes for college administration at the Uni- versity of Kentucky. Mr. Small had his first experience as a college administrator at North Carolina State University in 1945-50. He joined the Campbell staff in 1950. - Fred McCall Vice-President for Institutional Development 24

During the brief twenty months of his presidency, Dr. Norman A. Wiggins has demonstrated beyond ques- tion, a total dedication to the job, absolute loyalty and complete devotion to the college, and a preoccupation with the welfare and concerns of all its students and employees. He has enlisted the support of many outstanding people to serve as presidential advisors, provoked much activity among the trustees, projected the expanded image of the college in many places, and set in motion ef- forts by groups and individuals to share his dreams, make plans, and find ways for their implementation. His leadership extends well beyond the campus and the college community to the denomination, the state, and the region. His advice and accumulated insights in matters of law and banking are frequently in demand. His large reservoir of good will and an ever increasing circle of warm friendships constitute some of the col- lege ' s chief assets. A former athlete and continuing lover of all sports, Vice-President A. R. Burkot will see the tribute intended in calling him utility man. He cannot claim ever to have been housemother or dean of women, but in thirty-four years Campbell ' s most versatile teacher of languages has learned almost every other role of the college through playing it in one way or another. Invaluable to two presidents has been his contact with Southern educators through his service on school accreditation com- mittees of state and regional associations. A lover of his first profession, this busy administrator thus far has never failed to exercise his continuing prerogative as aca- demic dean of the college — to reserve at least one language class to teach himself. DR. ALEXANDER ROMAN BURKOT Vice-President and Academic Dean 23
