BuiE ' s Creek, North Carolii PREFACE As we look in retrospect at kaleidoscopic images of the past school year, we view dynamic changes. The college is changing its external appearance as well as its inner vision. The rewarding accomplishment of our accreditation has brought about in the hearts of all who are connected with the college special feelings of loyalty to and pride in our beloved school and has given us new prominence in the eyes of both educators and laymen. Our faculty sees the realization of intellectual strivings; our staff sees the reward of many years of struggle with the minute, but necessary, details of their jobs; our students see the meaningful nature of an invigorated campus and will later come to know the added worth borne both by the degrees awarded by the college and by knowledge gained. Accredi- tation carries with it, however, obligations for all of us. Responsibility for maintaining high standards rests with faculty and staff, and students are expected to hold the banner high, that it may not become tattered or soiled. Our achievement carries for us the motivation to continue our quest for truth. The pride that results from our accomplishment is a pride that sets man ' s thought above the mundane trivialities of existence and channels his sight to higher visions of continuation and universal truth. Inspired by the drive resulting from this enriching success, the PINE BURR staff presents its attempt to reproduce the merging images of the total campus pattern in words and pictures and to lay before you Campbell College, 1967. thitsitian Accreditation as a senior institution of higher education marks recog- nition of Dr. Leslie H. Campbell ' s achievement and of Campbell College ' s potential for a broadening future since its acceptance into the community of the College ' s educational peers. Events, however, do not happen. They are made to happen. At the heart of historically significant events are persons committed to their shaping. Campbell College, like all institutions of note, exists and in- fluences persons and society creatively because of its rich endowment with persons whose lengthened shadow it is. This annual ' s dedication to President Leslie H. Campbell reminds us of this fact. No individual better symbolizes than he the investment of a life ' s fullest energies and best talents for the realization of the beckon- ing goals Campbell College represents. No lengthy cataloguing of the numerous gifts of mind, heart and strength thus invested is necessary for those who know him best. Brief allusion to his Scotch heritage and to the name and character he bears with dignity will best serve our tribute. As he passes the mantle of leadership and vision to another upon entering a deserved and enriching ' retirement, we salute him with these words first offered of his Scotch ancestor, the Fourth Duke of Argyll: A sound clear-headed soldier, a commander thoughtful for the needs of his men and a shrewd, conscientious, and kindly man.
