COMPANIONSHIP it ' s good to walk together . . . fresh from the joys of another basketball game . . . past the science building to the dormitories on the other side . . . our steps becoming slower and smaller as we come closer . . . the near-touch of hands ... a smile ... a swift goodnight ... turner auditorium before chapel begins ... the whispered word ... a look returned . . . the hastily mumbled farewell . . the dormitory parlor on Sunday afternoon ... the week-end movie . . . the meetings attended, just to be together . . . that study date in the library . . . the harvest festival . . . the may-day pageant . . . the spring evening walks . . .

for what do we hope ... for the substance of things prayed for . . . the continuity of our years; the unforced faith; the dream . . . we hope for graduation; for inspiration; for passing marks . . . but mostly for the things of this world: for friends, for happiness, achievement . . . success . . . we hope for those who shall come, that they too will find all that we have had . . . and more . . .

MEDITATION there is time enough for meditation . . . have you walked the many- treed walks, watching the cavorting squirrels — frantically searching for nuts before they are plowed under . . . past the theatre, across the circle, around the old well . . . not caring why . . . but just to get out for awhile . . . away from the noise — and study . . . and all the while thinking . . . your feet shuffling in the falling leaves ... or out in the biting winds, watching your breath form miniature clouds that drift away into nothingness, as do your dreams ... on past the library, skirting pearson, across to the steps of d. rich . . . then back to the busy dorm and your window on the world ... to smoke one final cigarette . . . watching the lights silently blink out in the distance, until they . . . the rest of the world, are asleep . . . 23
