An individual is the sum of his remembered past, his relation- ship to others, his response to challenge in the present, and the pull of the future upon him. Our founder ' s past was rooted in the sturdy, independent Scotch who pioneered the settlement of the Cape Fear Basin. Strict Calvinistic piety was the heart- beat of this Scotch heritage. With James Archibald Campbell, as with his forebears, depth of personal devotion to the sovereign maker of heaven and earth was not an option but a mandate. Religious fervor Inirned brightly as the central motivation of a life to be remembered for its selfless service to men. Like his father before, he was both minister and farmer, tilling the good earth from week to week, sowing God ' s word on Sunday. He shared liis father ' s sturdy zeal and from him liad the earthy practicality shown in counsel offered from the pulpit and in the leadership he gave the school that was to bear his name.
