ii ' € te m. . 100 % 100 Years Ago . . . Anniversaries speak to us of lastingly meaningful events in the lives of individuals. Also included are those institutions or groups which are shaped by their dreams and destinies. Events don ' t happen — they are made to happen. So it is in the birth and growth of institutions. Some individual strides to an abyss of need or a mountainous difficulty, daring to believe a solving word can be uttered. This creative word is spoken, sometimes in persuasive utterance, but more often in the deed springing from the purposeful life. Our college bears the name of a man who dreamed and who dared through costly investment of self to make the dream come true. Let us then begin our story where it must begin, with J. A. Campbell — the man behind the name borne by our school.

In these opening pages of your annual we tell the story of three anniversaries. To do so is not to shackle you in memory to the past, but to inspire you toward bold involvement in a beckoning future. The French philosopher, Jean Paul Sartre, reminds us, Human beings are never quite themselves. They ' re always a little bit behind or a little ahead of themselves. In these pages we turn a bit behind ourselves in order to live a bit ahead of ourselves in the years before us. The Editors Mrs. J. A. Campbell, wife of the founder of this college who lives on the outskirts of the campus, at the age of 96 is pictured here ivith her great-grand-daughter, Kathy.

An individual is the sum of his remembered past, his relation- ship to others, his response to challenge in the present, and the pull of the future upon him. Our founder ' s past was rooted in the sturdy, independent Scotch who pioneered the settlement of the Cape Fear Basin. Strict Calvinistic piety was the heart- beat of this Scotch heritage. With James Archibald Campbell, as with his forebears, depth of personal devotion to the sovereign maker of heaven and earth was not an option but a mandate. Religious fervor Inirned brightly as the central motivation of a life to be remembered for its selfless service to men. Like his father before, he was both minister and farmer, tilling the good earth from week to week, sowing God ' s word on Sunday. He shared liis father ' s sturdy zeal and from him liad the earthy practicality shown in counsel offered from the pulpit and in the leadership he gave the school that was to bear his name.
