IN MEMORIAM We shall continue to need denominational institu- tions dedicated to teaching the religious principles that undergird Western democracy. We should support them was the profound belief of H. Cloyd Philpott. the late lieutenant governor of North Carolina. Lieutenant Governor Philpott was one to match belief and action. Believing in Christian higher education, he accepted election to head a statewide citizens ' group for Campbell College, the Student Committee of Expansion. As Baptist Sunday school superintendent and deacon, he was already well informed of the work of his denomina- tion at the college level. He gave generously of his advice and help while the Student Committee of Expan- sion was being organized; and he spoke to statewide audiences urging public support of its work to under- write Campbell ' s senior-college program. His sponsorship of the college was one of the final works in his career of varied service to his church, his town, and the larger community of North Carolina; on August 19, 1961, he died at his home on High Rock Lake, after a three-day illness. His friends had confidently supposed that the people would sunnnon him to higher office of state or nation after his term as lieutenant governor. His death cut short their expectations; but it could not cancel their satis- faction in what his life already had achieved. A successful businessman, he had risen to prominence among Southern furniture manufacturers and had been honored twice as man of the year by his associates in the furniture industry. He had served as mayor of Lexington, and to become lieutenant governor, he gave up the lesser office in his fourth term as representative in the General Assembly of North Carolina. Campbell College is proud and grateful to acknowledge continuing benefit from the influence of this distinguish ed statesman and good friend.

A distinguished physician, generous civic leader and devoted member of the Asheboro First Baptist Church. ROBERT CURRIN In retrospect, the life of a man can be measured from different points of view. With an eye on the calendar, it can be stated in terms of the allotted three score years and ten or the actuary ' s latest average. Statistically, it can be announced that one has accumulated treas- ures or storehouses, stocks and bonds. Or, one has left behind so many survivors and heirs. Also, one has held so many offices and jobs, and attained various honors. A more significant measurement deals with impressions and in- fluence upon those who were his friends and neighbors. Are we the richer for having known him? Is the community a better place because he lived and moved about in it? During his period of service with Campbell College as farm super- intendent. Bob Currin made every day a full day. There was no guile nor pretense in his manner. Dependable, responsible, eager to learn and to improve his effectiveness, he honored God and man in his words, deeds, and attitudes. All of us are grateful for having known him and worked with him in love and Christian service. IN MEMORIAM
