IN MEMORIAM We shall continue to need denominational institu- tions dedicated to teaching the religious principles that undergird Western democracy. We should support them was the profound belief of H. Cloyd Philpott. the late lieutenant governor of North Carolina. Lieutenant Governor Philpott was one to match belief and action. Believing in Christian higher education, he accepted election to head a statewide citizens ' group for Campbell College, the Student Committee of Expansion. As Baptist Sunday school superintendent and deacon, he was already well informed of the work of his denomina- tion at the college level. He gave generously of his advice and help while the Student Committee of Expan- sion was being organized; and he spoke to statewide audiences urging public support of its work to under- write Campbell ' s senior-college program. His sponsorship of the college was one of the final works in his career of varied service to his church, his town, and the larger community of North Carolina; on August 19, 1961, he died at his home on High Rock Lake, after a three-day illness. His friends had confidently supposed that the people would sunnnon him to higher office of state or nation after his term as lieutenant governor. His death cut short their expectations; but it could not cancel their satis- faction in what his life already had achieved. A successful businessman, he had risen to prominence among Southern furniture manufacturers and had been honored twice as man of the year by his associates in the furniture industry. He had served as mayor of Lexington, and to become lieutenant governor, he gave up the lesser office in his fourth term as representative in the General Assembly of North Carolina. Campbell College is proud and grateful to acknowledge continuing benefit from the influence of this distinguish ed statesman and good friend.
