was more than could be promised the headmaster, now over a million dollars a year are budgeted for the manifold needs of the institution; and a school which opened with sixteen students present is preparing now, sevently-five years later, for sixteen hundred. Forging this instrument of faith and progress has been the work of many hands. Thousands, often unknown to the college, have sacrificed for it. Many have devoted their profes- sional lives to bringing it to its present strength and temper. Who can tell about them? Who can say what hundreds of trustees and committeemen have spent for it in time, anxiety, and effort? Who can appraise what ministers of North Carolina churches have done to speed this college on its way? Who can say enough of the men and women of Southern communities who have Continued on page 159

1 50 %H im iir- 50 Years Ago Fittingly the 1962 Pine Burr is dedicated to the man whose leadership has brought the story we tell in this annual to the present promising moment. President Leslie H. Campbell best symbolizes the enriching wortli of our school ' s past and the hopes we share of her for a greater future as a senior college. He has led this institution as a man ever standing with firm convictions rooted in what the past of the school has taught, but always ready to move over the threshold to what the future may hold for the wise and courageous to claim. Fifty years! — a half-century of life invested in this college! To know the man is better to know and serve the school with which he has so tirelessly identi- fied himself. Clue to his seemingly boundless energy is his burning desire to see Campbell College lifted to higher opportunity and achievement.
