Our Scottish Heritage On a bleak winter day, January 5, 1887. a young Scotsman, the Reverend James A. Campbell, established Buies Creek Academy, the foreruiuier of our present college which bears his name. With the fortitude and energy that characterized his forbears. Professor Campbell struggled to make the school a permanent one. The Academy progressed unbelievably from a one-room school with six- teen pupils, to an imposing three-story building with three hundred and eighty students within thirteen years. Disaster struck on December 20, 1900, when fire destroyed the school. From the ruins emerged a greater institution than had ever been envisioned by the industrious Scottish preacher-teacher who founded it. Within three years, majestic Kivett building was completed. Today it stands surrounded by more than twenty other buildings. In 1926 the school was bought by the North Carolina Baptist State Convention and the name was changed to Campbell College, with the founder as its president. Sin ce 1934, the mantle of leadership has fallen on his first son. Dr. Leslie H. Campbell. Growth and change have characterized his capable administration. With the help of loyal friends and co- workers, he has steered Campbell College to a place of prominence in higher education. Meeting the needs of the days ahead combined with assurance of confidence in the record of the years past have brought Campbell College to the crossroads of its greatest challenge. The Baptist State Con- vention of North Carolina has authorized the conversion of the junior college into a senior college. The success of the current campaign to raise two million dollars to accomplish this project will mark Dr. Campbell ' s crowning achievement. We are proud of our Scottish heritage — a heritage of perseverance, loyalty, high moral stand- ards, loving kindness and devotion to Christian education. Confidently we carry on the traditions of this valued legacy to our times. As you thumb through the pages of this book, we trust you will feel a degree of pride in this heritage and that you will be reminded pleasantly of your stay here at Campbell.
