FOREWORD This year the 1956-57 staff of the Pine Burr has tried to present to you in the twenty-second vohinie of our yearbook, faculty members, class- mates, organizations, features, snapshots, and ath- letics. They are to remind us in the future of the days we spent at dear ole Campbell. This book will be for us a record of the friends we knew, the things we did, and the memories that will always be dear to us. The Yearbook of 1956-57 will bring to mind the enrollment of 426 in 1953 to 815 in 1957, the Expansion Program that was carried on for the betterment and uplifting of Campbell College, the new, spacious library annex and other buildings in the planning stage. We have striven hard and worked diligently to make our yearbook the best. It has taken much time and outstanding co-operation from everyone. We hope in the years to come, as you turn the pages of the Pine Burr, you will be reminded of a school where high moral standards are maintained and the Golden Rule is practiced as an aid to the mold- ing of good, Christian character. slrtC:

VEdlCATION We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him. — Romans 8:28 Like Paul, whose life and works represent part of his subject-matter, this man whom we honor has been able to wrest victory from defeat, triumph from tragedy, and strength from pain. A bursting shell on Africa ' s sands maimed his body but did not warp his spirit nor quench his curiosity. He radiates good cheer, enthusiasm and friendliness. He asks no quarter and represents a constant challenge to all able-bodied men and women. An indefatigable worker, he imparts to his students glimpses of his personal struggle to reach the stars through difficulties. With genuine affection and high regard, we of the Pine Burr staff take pleasure in dedicating this 1957 edition to our friend and teacher, Dr. Perry Q. Langston.
