They are to remind us in the future of the days we spent at dear ole Campbell. This book will be for us a record of the friends we knew, the things we did, and the memories that will always be dear to us. The Yearbook of 1956-57 will bring to mind the enrollment of 426 in 1953 to 815 in 1957, the Expansion Program that was carried on for the betterment and uplifting of Campbell College, the new, spacious library annex and other buildings in the planning stage. We have striven hard and worked diligently to make our yearbook the best. It has taken much time and outstanding co-operation from everyone. We hope in the years to come, as you turn the pages of the Pine Burr, you will be reminded of a school where high moral standards are maintained and the Golden Rule is practiced as an aid to the mold- ing of good, Christian character. slrtC: :- ' (- ' i ' - ' ■■■■. v.- ■;•:■. ■ t It;;: ' vn: - in kSxdnii ' nwetftxTj ' ; D. RICH MEMORIAL ADMINISTRATION BUILDING VEdlCATION We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him. — Romans 8:28 Like Paul, whose life and works represent part of his subject-matter, this man whom we honor has been able to wrest victory from defeat, triumph from tragedy, and strength from pain. A bursting shell on Africa ' s sands maimed his body but did not warp his spirit nor quench his curiosity. He radiates good cheer, enthusiasm and friendliness. He asks no quarter and represents a constant challenge to all able-bodied men and women. An indefatigable worker, he imparts to his students glimpses of his personal struggle to reach the stars through difficulties. With genuine affection and high regard, we of the Pine Burr staff take pleasure in dedicating this 1957 edition to our friend and teacher, Dr. Perry Q. Langston. V APPRECIATION By unanimous acclaim the Board of Trustees of Campbell College on November 19, 1956, authorized that the at- tractive new ninety-six-man Dormitory, completed last year, be known as the J. F. Kitchin Dormitory. By so doing they pay tribute to the brilliant success of this young Norfolk businessman and to his abiding loyalty as an alum- nus, particularly as it was ex- pressed in his timely challenge gift during the recent Develop- ment Program Campaign. Winston Lillington North Carolina The Board of Trustees of an institution may be aptly described as the power behind the throne. Chosen by and representing the Baptist State Conven- tion, Campbell ' s Board owns title to the properties of the college, adopts all operating budgets, passes upon faculty nominations, decides upon future-planning programs and policies, ahd reviews current adminis- trative procedures. Much credit for the spectacular growth in enrollment of 85 per cent in three years and the correspondingly rapid expansion of plant facili- ties is due to the progressive co-operative leadership of Campbells Board during the last few years. Credit for tlie over-subscription by more than $50,000 of the $250,000 goal for plant expansion during the fall of 1956 should go in large measure to tlie generous pledges and active campaigning of the Trustees. 4Xmi .% 17 t X l - MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT L. H. CAMPBELL If indeed our minds are peopled, like some silent city, with a sleeping company of reminiscences, associations, impressions, atti- tudes, emotions, what happy memories this album of familiar faces and scenes will awaken in after years! How these pages throw the spotlight upon the varied efforts of many glamorous young actors as they strut their parts on the stage of college life! Our thanks to the editors who have depicted for us so accurately and artistically the aspirations, disappointments, and adventures of our days at Campbell. But some say that such drama as we have herein portrayed is based upon unreality. Nevertlieless the rules of success and failure are the same as those that govern in the game of life beyond campus walls, where they play for keeps. Punishments and rewards are just as inevitable. For when the one great scorer Comes to write against your name He ivrites — not that you won or lost — But how you played the game. MESSAGE FROM DEAN A. R, BURKOT Having passed this way together, may we share the memory of our brief pilgrimage recorded here in scenes and faces, names and deeds. Let them kindle anew the glow of warm friendships, the sparks of enthusiasm for our many associations, the light that came from words of wisdom and acts of loving kindness. Yes, it was good to be here and may the distance of days to come not obscure the reality of life as we lived it, amid laughter and tears, successes and sorrows, toil and leisure. Each passing year on life ' s journey will sharpen our yearning for the privilege that cannot be ours to live once more our days at Campbell. ADMINISTRATION AND f ACUITY Left to right: Duane W. Its common concern is the welfare of Campbell President College and of each individual connected with it. The activities of the student government are legis- lative, executive and judicial in scope. An ever- increasing student body presents the need for many adjustments and the application of imagination to the solution of problems tliat arise. The emphasis is placed on fairness, firmness and mutual concern. CLASS OFFICERS: Boh Vauchan. President: Sue Murphv, Bill Tunstall. Mr. Tripp, Advisor; Myrtle Ann Phillips. One can see from a survey of leadership in the field of religion in our area that Campbell College has furnished her share of worthy and capable Christian workers. A few years ago, the administration became keenly aware of the ever-growing need of better preparing the ministerial students. As a result a Ministerial Conference Class was organized. The class secures as speakers for these meetings well- trained men from church-related iiistitutions and churches, thereby enabling the ministerial student to come in contact with the best minds and person- alities of our area. To Lynn Barry and his assistants my tlianks for the outstanding pictures. It was a long, tough pro- cess and working with such a rookie co-editor, I know, brought about undreamed of complications. The pictures were still great! This year, as in many years past, our individual portraits for the class section, superlatives, and May Court are the product of Haynes Studio in Raleigh. Thanks Mr. Haynes for your never- ceasing co-operation. To the faculty and students who turned in copy pertaining to clubs and athletics, I would like to say many thanks. My thanks to the firms and concerns who con- tributed to our book. Also, to Champ for his fine work on ads. Finally to our Faculty Sponsor, Robert L. King: words are futile in expressing our gratitude for your work and co-operation. You seemed never too busy to listen to all our problems and if pos- sible to provide the right answer.
