BRITT DORMITORY MEN ' S DORMITORY FACULTY ANNEX GYMNASIUM 11 DEDICATION Mr. I. M. Wallace The crowns of many institutions are studded with the lifetime contribu- tions of a handful of faithful men and women who cast their lot, for better or worse, for richer or poorer. Each succeeding year finds them at their respective assignments, blend- ing into a composite picture of toil and struggle, achievement and failure, recession and progress. From the days of Dr. J. A. Campbell ' s Buie s Creek Academy through the life span of Campbell College, thirty-three years thus far. Professor Wallace has been training and admonishing his boys and girls to become more useful citizens. Scattered in many places, they affectionately call to mind the example of this loyal, patient, kindly teacher and friend. In their behalf and in the name of the student body of Campbell College, we take pleasure in dedicating the 1948 Pine Burr to Professor I. M. Wallace. 12 13 Our President Dear Comrades, may every recur- ring visit to this treasure house of college life re-etch upon the table of your hearts those precepts of eternal life Alma Mater has sought diligently to teach her beloved children from public platform, campus rendezvous, and soul trysting place. For each of you may life abound in every good thing, according to the promise unto those who keep the com- mandments. Leslie H. Campbell President PRESIDENT S HOME 14 Dean A. R. BURKOT Again, it becomes my happy privilege to speak a few words of greeting. I am sure that the promise of the staff to make this edition of the Pine Burr the best ever has been fulfilled. To the faithful workers and their faculty sponsors, ycu and 1 owe a positive expression of sincere apprecia- tion. How valuable this record of faces and events of the school year 1947-48 at Campbell College will be remains to be seen. As an actor in some of the scenes of this living panorama, you have left an indelible imprint. As the historian who can more truthfully appraise the significance of recent events in the light of further experience and from the vantage point of later years, so will you see more clearly what your stay at Campbell has meant. For those who carry on, I covet your prayers, good wishes and honest report. Be assured of our unceasing desire to serve you better and to remember you always. Signed: A. R. Burkot. Dean Burgot was present at the first meeting to explain the duties and responsibilities of Council members. He stated that the purpose of the group is to help the students and not pri- marily to act as a police organization. During the week-end of Home Coming the Council sponsored four exhibits which prophesied the certain defeat of Belmont Abbey. Another project was that of sending a ciuestionnaire to the Alumni for the purpose of obtaining information that would be valuable in determining future policies of the College. The House Council also undertook the project of furnishing a room with catalogues, newspapers, and general information from senior colleges. These are for use by the students at their convenience. Members are given parts in plays, and are taught technical work while working on productions. The first production for the year ' 47- ' 48 was a series of one-act plays by North Carolina playwrights. The Old Dram Tree. a tragic-comedy by Clare Johnson Marby: Four on a Heath by Fester-Fitzsimmons; and Quare Medicine by Paul Green made up the bill. A Christmas pageant was given in cooperation with the college choir, under the direction of Miss Phyllis Thompson. The club will sponsor a full-length play later in the season. The play chosen for production is The Admirable Crichton. a classic by J. M. Barrie. It is hoped that througli the efforts of this organization, better speech and a sense of stage presence may be learned. It is our belief that these things help one in every day life, and that through learning them we become better citizens and well-rounded individuals. 98 The A Cappella Choir Neil Downing ..President Irene Peterson Secretary Harold Sauls Treasurer Frances Fletcher, Scrap Book Keeper Membership in the A Cappella Choir is obtained by competitive try-outs which are held early in the tall semester, and members are accepted for their music abilities, personalities, and voices. The outbreak of war in Europe in August of that year had stimulated interest in Inter- national Relations, an interest which, it was believed, could be guided into channels of enlightening, scientific and non-partisan discussion by the founding of clubs in colleges for that purpose. It was believed, furthermore, that those young men and women whose privilege it had been to devote special study to international relations would constitute a powerful force in molding public opinion during the next generation. The early Clubs were known as International Policy Clubs.
