With a calm, deliberate stride, she has marched through the long succession of yesterdays that link the Campbell College of today to the one-room school and sixteen students of the opening session of Buie ' s Creek Academy. She makes her contribution cjuietly. With a diligent, unremitting toil, she lias borne the many burdens that fall to the lot of a faithful wife, a devoted mother, a loyal citizen, a generous neighbor, an himilole Christian. She enriches our lives inevitably. With a genuine and constant care, she has added to the best traditions of Alma Mater and has rounded out the impress of her founder-husband and of her president-son. We take pride in dedicating the 1947 Pine Burr to Mrs. Cornelia Pearson Campbell. As it opens the door, may it release happy memories of a year well-spent. As you put it aside, may it awaken a feeling you must have experienced before. I am sorry I missed you at homecoming this week-end. â–  ' Hello, Bob: things have surely changed around here, haven ' t they? Who would have thought that in just ten short years we would be riding from Buie ' s Creek to Raleigh on this streamlined bus? It is quite a change over those broken down buses of 1947. Only last year Herbert Morgan bought out the old bus line and installed these new jet- propelled buses. Campbell certainly has grown! There are ten new dormitories, two administration build- ings, a scince building, a new music building, and a new g.ym, and Clyde Wilder, the contractor on the job, tells me that the boy ' s dorm begun in 1946 will soon be finished. Yes, Bob, and the departments have expanded, too. Dr. Bea Douglas is now the assistant English department head. And did you hear that Frances Lynch coached the Campbell basket- ball team that won nation-wide fame at Madison Square Garden? That ' s not all, Roger Williams, Campbell ' s head coach, lead the football team to another victory at the Rose Bowl. Whv, they haven ' t lost a single conference since the Junior College Championship of 1946 ' Speaking of advancement, Ruth, did you notice Ray Oliver ' s new five-story dry goods store on Main Street? I certainly did; he carries a complete line of ladies ' fashions designed by Rhea Brandon. He makes more success with that than he does with his political line. They tell me he has run for ten public offices in the last seven years. Don ' t be so hard on him. Bob, I believe he ' ll make Notary Public this year. Harold Nail is backing him with the Buie ' s Creek Morning Herald and Evening Tribune. By the way, did you see the picture starring Marigold Powell at W. J. Taylor ' s new movie liouse on Foushee Avenue? It ' s grand how she began as secretary to the producer and became a star. I didn ' t see it: I started up, but I met Dr. Sam Jones with his wife and ten children. He insisted that I go to his office and have my throat painted. Anyway, the picture will show in Raleigh soon, I guess. I tliought Billy Stallings was going to be an actor also. What ever became of him ' ? Oh, didn ' t you see him at Bobby Hamilton ' s College Grill? He ' s the new singing waiter there. Is that a portable radio you have, Ruth? I ' m anxious to hear the news from station FROG, Voice of Buie ' s Creek. That ' s the station originated from the old Pearson Moonglow Program. Incidentally, Walter Pearson is commentator. No, I ' m sorry: it ' s just a record player. Have you heard the A Cappella Chorus lately? Of course, they ' ve been in such popular demand that they have never returned from their tour begun in 1947. Bob! Look out the window! What kind of tomatoes are those? They look like pumpkins! Haven ' t you heard of Gordon Connor ' s new chemical farm? He has surpassed Burbank in his development of plants. I ' ll bet you never suspected that he would achieve such great success wlien you graded all his chemistry papers. Who is that sunburned fellow in the seat ahead, Ruth? He looks familiar. Oh, that ' s J. P. Blanton who went on the cattle boat to the Pacific in 1947 and decided to remain as a missionary. After this leave, he will return to the island of Tuba Tuba which ad- joins the island of Tuba Fourba, on which Frances Carter is a Missionary. Oh, yes, I remember, seeing him this morning at the First Baptist Church of Buie ' s Creek, talking to Reverend Bridges. Reverend Bridges is doing wonderful work at the church with tlie assistance of Carolyn Smith, religious educational director. Did you see Wayland Fry kissing all the babies at church this morning? I guess that means he ' s running for sheriff of Moore Count.v again. Shirley Robinson is now the representative for the Dubarry Success Course. Isn ' t that a quaint little home among tlie trees. Ruth? I wonder who lives there. Oh, it ' s darling! The names on the box are Hugh and Hortense Parker. Wliy, here we are in Raleigh already. Time surely does fly when you reminisce. Ruth Wiggins. Fifteen years having elapsed, I gaze into my crystal ball and see large numbers of the Campbell High School Class of ' 47 at Home-Coming. Many of the former students of 47 are coming into the scene. Others bring reports of classmates who were unable to be present. A large building comes into sight. What! yes, it ' s a new infirmary- with Doctors Peggy Weeks and Gray Hall in charge. They are assisted by Agnes Dickie, and Dorothy Grissom, nurses, and Renthea Woodworth, pharmacist. Others of our classmates are working in various phases of the profession. Miriam Ferebee is teaching dietetics at Duke University. Dorothy Brock is nursing at Rocky Mount and Anne Greene is North Carolina ' s State Supervisor of Public Health Joe Edwards is practicing dentistry with his father in Fuquay Springs. William Vazquez is now a brain specialist in Puerto Rica. Tom White is pastor of the Buie ' s Creek Baptist Church. Directing the choir is Maclyn Mackie who recently moved into the community. Betsy Campbell has taken her place as organist of the church. Earleen Willis is a missionary to the interior of China. Guilford Daugherty is President of the International Red Cross, located in Switzerland Do I see car parts flying? Yes, Cameron Holmes and Floyd Johnson are using their engineer- ing ability to help Jimmy Allen put his car in shape. Jimmy is still stuck taking geometry; dif- ficulties this time being under Professors Horace McInturfT and Braxton Munden. The secretarial association takes in many Campbellites. Opal Ennis is working for Scott Satterfleld who is manager of Buie ' s Creek ' s largest department store. Pat Batchelor is secretary to the new governors of Georgia, and Pat Davis is secretary to the president of the French- American Airlines. Anne Stroud, air hostess, and Eugene Mills, pilot, are working for the Pan- American Airlines in Florida. Betty O ' Quinn is in New York designing the latest fashions for the well-dressed womoi. Barbara Taylor is her best-known model at present. Drue Simpson, Walter Deal, Flora Gilbert, Joyce McLeod, and Bobby Long, having kept their physical fitness, are directing physical education in five of the leading colleges in the south. In the matrimonial department we find the Jack Matthews. Mrs. Matthews was the former Bobbie Stewart and is keeping house while Jack farms. The Joe Mackies run a furniture store in Granite Falls, Joe ' s home town. Evelyn Barden has joined this group and has moved to Erwin. Friendly old Herman Moore and his family are living in Raleigh, where he is director of Public Welfare. Garland Matkins, Ray Wallace, Clarence Desern are others in our group, who own large businesses. Archie Brigman has just won the heavy-weight championship of the Golden Gloves. Bill Massey, a great pianist, Nell Beaman, youngest met star, and Ben Stephenson, director of Westminster choir, are serving in the musical world. Donald Miller has recently completed his great composition The Storm. Ben Chandler has turned out to be a great businessman. He owns the well-known Chandler five and ten cent stores, located in the eastern states. William Bunch and Earl Bradley are work- ing as salesman and business manager, respectively. I see that Richard Carr is running a honey factory in Plymouth. Granville Ryals owns the Ryals Beauty Cultin-c College under the man- ageinent of Joan Edge. Clinton Ousley and James Bowen are teaching agriculture at N. C, State College. Jennings Pulley and Arthur Mason, French majors, are teaching in France. Looking across the ocean to Europe we see that Leon Avant, Haley Dedmond, Maynard Hawes and Mary Kipp have leading roles in Shakesperian plays. At their last appearance in Eng- land, they were entertained by Queen Elizabeth, England ' s new queen. Paul Blackwell is doing research work on atomic power in Russia, but says he will share his secrets with the United States. Back at Campbell I see a large car, which is parking beside the Gushing Music Building. James Faison and the new dean of Campbell College, Eastwood Turlington are getting out. Ac- companying them are the new manager of the business department, Harry Cornwall; the owner of the College Grill, Jack Lee Stewart; and the band director Lemarr Roberts. Haydcn Bcatty and Eugene Mustian are operating a radio repair shop in Buie ' s Creek. Busi- ness for them has iDeen good since radios were installed in each dormitory room. Damon Stewart is chief of the clowns in Barnum and Bailey ' s circus. In my crystal ball, I sec a crowd rushing to the dining hall. Luther Cratt is manager of the kitchen. Sidney Maynard is the cook with Addison Howard helping him. Since steak is served once a day, more help has been obtained. Charles Walton and Ray Casner have recently been admitted to the Bar. With their knowl- edge in this field, they will make groat lawyers. Hal Stewart is Supreme Court Judge. With so much work to do he has engaged J. M. Thompson to help him. A mist begins to form within my crystal ball and the scenes of the class of ' 47 fades out of sight. Patricia D.
