VOTE YES NOV 4l975 Christmas carol singing in the language classes. The last day of school for 1975 cer- tainly didn't end on a very hap- py note. After a twenty-one day closing period, the schools were able to reopen on January 2, 1976 by borrowing against the 1976 taxes. As students once again filled the M. H. S. hallways, there was much con- fusion as many had forgotten their locker combinations and schedules. The office was in a hectic and pandamonious state. Generally it took everyone a few days to get reacquainted with everything. Many students began to wonder how it would feel to be going to school on Saturdays and holidays in order to make up lost classroom time. Most students, however, didn't seem to mind that much. They were just glad to be back with friends and finish out the school year. A special election was planned for January 30 1976, to again put the school levy to a vote--this time for 10. 8 mills. Fortunately, the levy was victorious with 2374 votes cast in favor of as opposed to 1562 votes cast against. Un- doubtedly the shock of the actual closing of the schools persuaded many Campbell vot- ers to cast their votes in favor of the schools. Had this levy not passed in january, officals predicted another closing in 1976, maybe for 55 days. If the levys were continually de- feated and revenue was not in- creased, perhaps the Campbell school system would have had to consolidate into another sys- tem. Indeed that would be a Very dark day in Campbell his- tory, for the closing of a school system is certainly a very sad and depressing event. The worst part of it is, the ob- vious people to suffer are in- nocent students who don't even have a voice i.n the matter. STUDENT LIFE I 25

The voters had been warned that if the levy should fail, that schools would have to be closed due to lack of operating funds. They appar- ently chose not to heed the ture of their jobs, seniors were concerned about gradua- tion, and many students won- dered about the availability of summer jobs after a late sum- mer dismissal. Finally the closing date was announced for November 18, 1975. Teachers and stu- dents then began to rush to try and cram class assignments and activities into the few re- mainin class da s 8 Y - warnings. Most of the local television Following the election, the Board of Education brought in the state auditor in order to determine an exact closing date--the exact date when there would simply be no more o eratin funds P 8 - During the days of the audi- tor's study, the atmosphere within the school system was one of anxiety and tenseness. Teachers worried about the fu- 241 STUDENT LIFE and radio stations gave much coverage to the Campbell school situation, and perhaps the students, being caught up in the excitement of being interviewed on T. Many still believed that significant funds would magically appear from somewhere and save the day . But the miracle didn't hap- pen. As the final school day for 1975 approached, the rea- lity began to sink in. On that last day, trains of Happy Thanksgiving , Merry Christ- mas , and Happy New Year all rolled into one were heard echoing through the halls of M. I-I. S. Memorial students' spirits were slightly damp- ened as they realized the hol- iday activities that would be absent from their school lives that year. There would be no Thanksgiving or Christmas assemblies, no Christmas trees in the hall and cafeteria, no classroom decorations, no Christmas carols played over the P.A. system, no Christ- mas decorating by the N. I-l. S. , or no French and Spanish
