Campbell Memorial High School, named in memory of the veterans of World War I, gradu- ated it's first class of tvventy-seven students in 1926 under the guidance of Mr. R. N. Clark, the school's first principal. Since that time approximately 8, 349 students have been awarded diplo- mas. The first few years were organizing and building ones and no traditions were set then that are still kept today. In 1928, an addition was made to the school in the form of a football stadium. In 1936, the stadium was expanded under a federal WPA program to provide a seating capacity of 6000, and to this date remains one of the finest football stadiums in the Mahoning Valley. Football has played a large role in developing traditions and community pride. Over the years local followers of the sport have witnessed everything from undefeated seasons to winless seasons. During the school's Golden Years under the leadership of Coaches Barrett and Knapic, the Memorial Red Devils were the scourge of high school football in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania taking on all who were willing to play them. They always gave a good account of themselves and gained the respect of all who opposed them. With the exception of one year during the Great Depression, Senior classes have published an annual yearbook. In 1932, the Memorial yearbook was given the name Reveler, a title mis- takenly chosen to convey the idea of revealing. Ironically, the word reve1er actually means one who carouses in noisy merrimentf' but for traditional purposes the title has remained in use. Memorial students, especially the males, have always noticed that girls come in all shapes and sizes. Eventually, there was a desire to give recognition to the most attractive and person- able females in the various classes. As a result, in 1945, the tradition of selecting a Homecom- ing Queen during the football season was started. The first young lady to be honored with this title was Miss Eleanor Mravich. Pride in and dedication towards Memorial High School has constantly been present within the student body. In 1948, an Alma Mater paying tribute to Memorial was finally adopted. A student, Miss Josephine Grohovsky, and a music teacher, Mr. Raymond Spagnola, collaborated in writ- ing the lyrics and music. The song continues in popular usage to this date and is played by the school band and sung by the students at many of the school's major events. Memorial's studentpopulation continually increased, and the need for expansion was recog- nized. The second addition to the school was the construction of a new Field House in 1965. This structure consists of amodernbasketballcourt with a seating capacity for 1, 200 spectators: a spacious cafeteria and kitchen: physical education and locker roomsg and a specially constructed music room. This facility was named in memory of Mr. Nicholas A. D'Amato who served as su- perintendent of schools from 1960 until the time of his death in 1969. Since that first graduating class of 1926, a consistently high percentage of Campbell Mem- orial's graduates have gone on to distinguish themselves, seeking higher education in a wide variety of fields. There is much confidence that in years to come, many more bridges will be successfully crossed by Memorial's students during their journeys to determining their futures and their contributions to society. 7
