Board of Education To the Class of '62: In having achieved your climb to this important plateau in your educational development, I offer to you my sincerest congratulations. job opportunities in unskilled labor are diminish- ing in number and variety. Because educational re- quirements for all types of vocational pursuits are moving up, I would urge you to continue with the acquisition of more of the technical and knowledge requirements which are increasingly demanded. I pray that the habit of reading and study will remain with you always for the development and refine- ment of your mind. In years to come, as you refer to this memento of your high school days, may you always think kindly of those who wish for your success and happiness. May good fortune attend you in your moments of decision. Nicholas A. D'Amato Superintendent 8 se i -if SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Mr. Nicholas A. D'Arnato MR. Gone are our high school days, And all our carefree ways, As we walk the path on our commencement day. So take my hand and lead me through the world, For now it's time to walk alone. Gone are our friends so dear, Also the teachers here, As we bid our high school days a fond farewell. Memorial High, the time has come to say good-bye. We, the Class of '62, needed such a leader to guide us. We needed one who was am- bitious and competent, and when we were but little greenies, we found those qualities in you, Mr. Nolfi. Now we are big seniors and we have discovered additional qualities in you. Aside from being ambitious and competent, we find a certain Congeniality and cleverness in your personality that has greatly advanced our class. Although you have helped us in many different ways we will vividly remember . . . our 8th grade spaghetti dinner, 9th grade swimming party, 10th grade pumpkin dance, our unique junior-senior prom, and finally everything during our senior year. We can never begin to show our gratitude. All we can do now is to say thank-you a million times over from the bottom of our hearts, for we know that our associations and achieve- ments will remain with us in the years to come. Mgr. went to a one week Pub- lications Workshop at Ohio Uni- versity where they picked up many hints for a better annual. At the beginning of the school year, various staff heads and business personnel were chosen. The Annual was then really un- derway. Innumerable pictures were taken with the help of Mr. Komarc, write-ups were pre- pared, and the well-organized business staff began magazine sales and advertisement cam- paigns, all of which were highly successful. The highlight of the past marching season was the striking new uniforms donned by the band members as they proudly marched through many brilliant half-time shows. The uni- forms were purchased through the selling of bonds to the citizens of Campbell who were highly cooperative. The band promptly showed its versatility in the Christmas Concert, during which marching members showed themselves to be accomplished musicians. The next great success was the 2nd Annual Pop Concert in February, when the band virtuosos played their way through recent popular songs, and themes from the movies. The concert ended with the song best associated with the band-Exodus. The Spring Concert, held in May, was the last concert and the high point of the band year. All the accomplishments of the past two years never would have been possible without the hard work, creativeness, and truly sincere interest of our band director Mr. George Hating. Resume The Memorial Red Devils opened up the 1961 season with a 34-0 loss to Steubenville Big Red. The Red Devils, captained by Jim Lanzo and Ken Kish, couldn't get started against Steubenville. The first home game resulted in a 6-6 tie with Chaney, followed by a disappointing 28-6 loss to Boardman, and a hard-fought 24-8 defeat at the hands of Hubbard. In the next encounter, Memorial showed real teamwork, by defeating Brookfield 56-0 with outstanding offensive play by Larry Carwell and Jim Wilush. Wfith a rain-soaked field hampering the Memorial running attack, the Red Devils went down to a 14-O defeat against the strong South High Warriors. Aroused by the South defeat, the Knapic men piled up a tremendous 52-0 victory over the Fitch Falcons. The Red Devils with their best offensive showing of the season, downed the Girard Indians 54-0. Despite the outstanding play of the Memorial defensive line in the East game, the Red Devils suffered a 22-0 loss. Against Arch rivals, Struthers, Memorial played a hard fought game, but came out on the short end of a 13-6 score. The Struthers game brought the 1961 football season to a close, not a particularly good season, but an exciting one. Larry Carwell and Richard Switka, along with Jim Lanzo and John Grdic were chosen to the All Steel Valley Squad. 88 MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS MHS Total Pts 1961 Record O Steub. 6 Chaney 6 Boardman 8 Hubbard 56 Brookfield 0 South 52 Fitch 54 Girard O East 6 Struthers 168 Total Pts. 9- -, 13 ,Sf . , f' f H 'zw , 'ni' ll X ,wil 1 I PT llis ..
