M AND 3 ADMINISTRATION A C U l T Y PERINTENDENT OF HO0L My best wishes to each one of you as you receive your Memorial High School diploma. Armed with that diploma, it is our fervent hope that in some measure you will be better equipped to realize your obligations and re- sponsibilities to God and to your fellowmon. From the ancient Athenians we received the greatest lesson in true freedom and citi- zenship. Because they allowed themselves to become soft and complacent, because they grew to expect more and give less, their way of life did not survive. Only by keeping alive the spirit of freedom, won by self- sacrifice and devotion to the highest ideals of the past, will our great American democ- racy continue to give humanity the leader- ship needed to preserve peace and the dig- nity of all mankind. z..z.,,..,,f27Zc4f 'li .,r- Bom or my CATIlfM 762 vw1p.,,. We were really a group of timid souls as we sat in the auditorium awaiting our schedule cards, but our anxiety mounted as we entered the huge halls for the first time and encountered the boys 8 feet tall who directed us to the fabled eleva- tor. Having survived that horrible first day, we later met our class sponsor, Miss Betty O'Brien, and elected Eugene Stancin as our first class president while the offices of vice-president, secretary, and treasurer were filled by Ronald Tofil, Patricia Zamary, and Monica Tofil respectively. These people arranged our first class party which included dancing by the girls fthe boys held up the wallsi, games, and refreshments and our spring outing at Roosevelt Park which really brought out the devil from the previously quiet little angels. Free at last of the unflattering nickname greenies, we freshmen, with Tom Kraynak as president, Dennis Gary as vice-president, Deloris Ravis as secretary and Nancy Tarr as treasurer, enioyed our first big events as a class. We ventured to the Industrial Exposition at Stambaugh Auditorium and later iourneyed to Pittsburgh for a visit to the zoo and museum. By spring of this year, although we were all becoming good friends, we were iust a little surprised when the boys left the walls at our annual class party and actually danced with the girls. Yes, our freshman year ended as one of the happiest, most carefree years of our lives. More confident as sophomores, we now donned our togas for the first time and stepped bravely into Mr.Zerella's Coliseum, the home of the Latin books and Romans. With President Jack Stefko, Secretary Patt Zamary, and Treas- urer Bonnie Balogh, we began our fund raising campaign in anticipation of our coming prom. Our bright sophomore days were dimmed, however, when we learned that our sponsor, Miss O'Brien would soon be leaving us to become Mrs. Felix Kikel. As juniors, we welcomed our new sponsor, Miss Josephine Gioglio, who helped us with our biggest class proiect, our iunior-senior prom. We worked for weeks making cherry blossoms for our Oriental Gardens and spent days dec- orating the gigantic hull . Our many hours' work was not in vain, however, for when the magic hour finally ar- rived, we were awe-struck at our own beautiful masterpiece. Yes, fun, romance and excitement filled the air on the night that will remain in our memories forever--our prom night. Tom Kraynak, president, Dennis Gary, vice- president, Carol Julius, secretaryg and Irene Diamandis, treasurer, were our iunior officers who contributed much to the success of that year. Senior year, with Gene Stancin as president, Roy Perry, vice-president, Pat Merolillo, secretary, and Sally Botch treasurer, was, indeed, the year it is said to be. We were swept into the whirl of activities in October when we began our magazine drive which was successful even though we fell a little short of our goal. Our reward for our hard work in the drive was a delicious spaghetti dinner which was, for many, the climax of weeks of dieting in preparation for it The annual staff met its deadline through hours of toil . Senior pictures and name cards were ordered, passed out, and by now forgotten. Our senior play was a great success, our senior assembly--a panic. The prom, presented by the iuniors, was truly a Fantasy in Blue. We danced with tears in our eyes at our last social, The Senior Farewell Dance These days are now only memories, memories that we will cherish forever. 1 - 1 ' ' Senior Su-uthers Pep Assembly---It paid off. John Brunovich had a 28 point evening and was ably assisted by Lamar Williams, who scored 14 points. Memorial met their first Steel Valley opponent at Fitch and thoroughly trounced them 71-52. Leon Kelley and Bill Barillare were high for the night with 23 and 18 points respectively. On a cold Tuesday night, Memorial met the high-flying Hubbard High Eagles who were riding on a string of four victories, but Memorial came to life during the second half and measured the Eagles 70-58. High men for the night were Leon Kelley 28 and Bill Barillare 18. I Girard played host to Memorial but the upset-minded Indians proved poor hosts as they turned the trick 64-61. John Brunovich meshed 28. After the loss to Girard, Memorial romped over a helpless Boardman quintet 72-43. John Brunovich, .Leon Kelley, and Bill Barillare combined talents for a 57 point outburst. Memorial visited Chaney but couldn't put the skids on Chaney's fast breaking aggregation, taking one of the worst beatings of the season. Final score 72-49. Memorial served as host, as arch-rival Struthers moved in, and after a very close battle, the Cots went down to defeat 65-63. Bill Barillare scored the winning bucket with seconds to go. John Brunovich had a good evening meshing 29 points and was ably assisted by Bill Barillare's 18 point offering. The Girard Indians were out to duplicate their past performance, but this time they weren't as fortunate, and lost 64-57. John Brunovich and Leon Kelley combined talents in canning 43. Memorial's winning streak was brought to a halt by the Struthers Wildcats classy quintet by a score of 59-39. John Brunovich led Memorial's anemic attack with 12 points. The Red Devils ended their regular season play by being downed by the Brookfield Warriors in a thrill packed contest, 76-74. The Memorialites finished in the mnner-up spot in the N.E.O. district tournament by losing to Warren Hard- ing by a score of 7 to 5. Much of last seasons success can be attributed to the fine hitting of Russ Maddick, Dennis Gary, Joe Smerk and Mickey Bruner and also the fine pitching of Jen'y Beck, George Pontikos and Rudy Arlow. With a little better defensive play the Red Devils might have had an excellent season and might have gone far in state tournament pla . However, next season with the return of eight lettermen including seniors Tom Se- vasio, Russ Maddick, Dennis Gary, and Bill Barillare, the Memorialites should again be in strong contension for district laurels. 62 in 5 X -.5',.PQ N.n it I N iky. kr 1 I . x, ,. ,Vi :M KN-Q . Gioglio P0 OR As our years at Memorial High have progressed, you have learner! that the roots of success can be matured only by hard work. You have learned that character is the product of daily actions, words, and thoughts, daily kindness and sacrifices for the good of others. A man has character when he is conscien- tious, when he has the will to do always what is good and right, when he does not go where it is easy to go, but where it is his duty to go, and when he has the moral courage to stand up for his religious convictions. lt is with these thoughts in mind that I extend to all of you my sincerest congratulations for your achievements thus far, and best wishes for continued success in all your future plans. It has been an enioyable and memorable experience to associ- ate with you, participate in your class activities, and enioy your friendship.
