Best wishes to the graduating class of 1958. LU Mr. M. Womack Jr. I5 A-- -- i 3 To build a safe and free world in whlch each individ- ual may aspire and achieve goals, has been a never end- ing dream of mankind. This challenge has been successfully nipped on but few fronts. Mankind is still without the kind of faith, convictions and courage it takes to make impressive strides to achieve peace and freedom from ever increasing political and social diseases. High ideals, strong character and a dedication of one's life to service must be your aims if your generation is to survive. ,!f,Z.44f Andrew S. Malys and C.Julius. Dedication The 1957 Memorial High School Football Squad would like to dedicate its 9-l season to Mrs. Carney, the mother of Senator Joseph Carney. Through the years, she has been the Number One fan and supporter of Mem- orial football. Although a very busy woman, she still finds time to attend every game and send each player a little gift at the end of every season. lt's iust a little something, but little things mean a lot, and her thought- fulness helps to make all the sweat and toil seem a little more worthwhile. People like her make us want to fight and instill in us a will to win, for we know that every minute, every play, she is praying and hoping that we'll come through. With us through thick and thin, no fair weather friend, to you Mrs. Carney, from the bottom of our hearts, we'd like to say thank you and may God bless you. ' ' In the opening game of the season the Red Devils met head on with a Steel Valley op onent, the Boardman Spartans, and literally trounced them 52-6 before a capacity crowd of 6,000 fans at Boardman Stadium. Nate Murray scored on runs of 54, 57, and 78 yards to electrify the crowd. Jerry Beck, Frank Pachik, Mike Niciforas, Ron Tofil, and John Geletka also scored six-pointers. Tom Toe Mingo rounded out the scoring by booting four extra points. The Memorial eleven proved not to be too good of a host as the routed the visiting Chaney Cowboys 34-0 before 3, 500 fans in the second contest of the year. Pacing the Red Devirattack was bruising halfback Mike Niciforas as he scored two touchdowns. Tom Mingo, John Kovach, and Nate Murray also scored one apiece. Mingo kicked three ex- tra points and Jerry Beck ran one over to complete the rout. The powerpacked Red Devils then traveled to Hubbard where they humiliated Dan Modak's outfit 50-6 before 3,000 fans. Nate Murray led the 398 yard ground attack by scoring three times on runs of 7, 26, and 55 yards. Pint-size Ron Tofil and Jerry Beck barreled their way for two scores apiece. Tom Mingo kicked four extra points and Beck ran over two to complete the scoring. The fourth game of the season found the Memorial eleven traveling to Niles where they made it four in a row dispos- ing of the Dragons 31-0 before 3,000 spectators. The only score the Red Devils could garner In the first half was Mike Niciforas's eight yard dash. But, the second half found the Red Devils tearing up the turf with 17 first downs to Niles's 1 with Mingo, Reichert, and Murray leading the scoring parade. Mingo kicked an extra point. The fifth game of the season found one of the toughest teams in the state as the Red Devils opposition. Youngstown South, with Mervin Spencer and company, fought an all out battle with the Red Devils before 11,000 fans at South Sta- dium. After the dust cleared away, the score was South 9 Memorial 0. Reichert, Niciforas, and Tofil with a 41 yard gallop chewed up most of the estate for the Red Devils but they just couldn't score. A safety and Spencer's touchdown was all the warriors needed. After a two week lay-off the Red Devils seemed not to be their own as they defeated a relatively weak Girard elev- en 28-6 before a slim homecoming crowd of 1,100 fans. But the Galloping Greek, Mike Niciforas, proved too much for the Indians as he scored three times on runs of 2, 5, and 14 yards. Frank Pachik began his broken field running as he scored on a 44 yard dash. Dawson was tackled by Cipriano in the end zone, and Pachik ran over two extra points to round out the scoring. On the following Monday the visiting Fitch Falcons fell under the growing strength of the Red Devils 51-7 before 1,300 spectators. Frank Pachik paced the Red Devils by scoring on runs of 34 and 58 yards, while Mike Niciforas also scored two on dashes of 7 and 24 yards. Murray, sophomore fullback Mel Sabol, and Bob Brayer accounted for three others. A Komarc-to-Arlow pass was the last six-pointer. Geletka, Tofil, and Pachik ran over the extra points. The traditional visiting of the Golden Bears of East drew a crowd of 3,000 who watched the Red Devils tune up for Struthers by whipping them 45-7 with three scores called back. Frank Pachik almost made it a personal effort as he scored four times on runs of 9, 16, 2, and 24 yards. The second big game of the year drew a packed stadium of 8,000 fans who witnessed the Red Devils slaughter of a cocky Struthers outfit 27-6. On one of the most sensational runs of the year, iunior halfback Ron Tofil, aided by a Bra er block, ran 63 yards for a touchdown on the eighth play of the game ro shock the fans. From then on it was all Red, Devil with Frank Pachik grinding out 124 yards and two touchdowns. Jerry Beck, who quarterbacked' the greatest game of his career, sneaked over for the other. Tofil finished up second to Pachik with 108 yards gained. Bob Schust- er's defensive play sparked the Red Devils' line. . Dad's night was the scene of the last game for twenty seniors who made their last showing a great one by defeating Wilson 48-13 before 1,200 spectators. Nate Murray and Mike Niciforas scored two apiece, while Frank Pachik, Torn Reichert, bruising senior fullback Mel Osman, and Bob Brayer scored one apiece. Cipriano tackled Spezio in the end zone for a safety while Geletka and Niciforas ran over one extra point apiece. Long-legged Matt Wansack booted an extra point which he will remember for a long time. 69 S M' ,,. Basketball The l957-1958 Red Devil basketball squad completed a great season, compiling a I3-4 mark, which finally brought thrilling basketball back to Memorial. John Francu, in his third year at the helm, coached a spirited unit led by John Mihalenko, Jim Hawkins, Jerry Beck, John Brunovich, Nate Murray, and Leon Kelly. Mihalenko, considered as one of the all-time Memorial greats, scored 406 points in I8 games for a sizzling 22 point average. After a slow start the Red Devils began compiling a good record but lost out in the Steel Valley Conference race by one game and had to settle for second place, behind Austintown Fitch. But this year can be considered very successful for it is a beginning of many great years of basketball at Memorial, and great tribute should be given to Coach John Francu and his Red Devil cagers for showing the way. wb K 2 1 3 . . Com- peting with area teams they lost all five games by close margins while really whipping their opponents in their victories. Such a season can be attributed to Coach Al Centofante's well rounded squad with catcher Mike Kish leading the parade. Even though Kish will be lost through graduation he made himself known to Campbell by leading the squad in batting for four years, and is considered to be one of the greatest base- ball players to don a Red Devil suit. Matt Bozichovich, an outfielder, combines with Kish as the only let- termen lost this year, while all the rest will be retuming. Look out for a great season for l958. ln the first game of the season the Red Devils were defeated by Niles in an exciting contest 3-2. Mike Kish had a double and a triple to pace the Memorial nine while Jerry Beck pitched a five-hitter. The next game found the Red Devils trouncing Levittsburgh 23-0 with Dennis Gary and Mike Kish lead- ing the parade with two hits apiece. John Slim Mihalenko fired a one-hitter to stymie Levittsburgh. The Memorial nine then traveled to Newton Falls and before a packed stadium defeated them 4-3. Russ Babe Maddick banged out 4 straight hits to pace the Red Devil attack. Dennis Gary drove in Jerry Beck for the clinching marker. At Oakland field the Red Devils made it three in a row defeating Howland 8-3. Dennis Gary had a triple and two single shots to pace Memorial while Rudy Fireball Arlow allowed Howland only two hits. ln the tournament the Memorial Nine was ousted by Niles who scored seven runs in the last inning to win 7-6. Babe Maddick blasted a long homerun plus a double and Mike Kish hit a homer and single to pace the Red Devil attack. The East Golden Bear nine then defeated Memorial 3-2 at Shady Run Field. The Red Devils were only able to garner four hits'with Kovach, Gary, Kish, and Bozichovich getting them. At Stambaugh field the South Warriors were defeated by Memorial 2-O behind the 3-hit pitching of Jerry Beck. ln the eighth game of the season the Red Devils were defeated by Struthers 8-4. Memorial only cou- pled four hits of Struthers hurlers. Warren then defeated the Red Devils 7-2 at Oakland Field. Frank Pachik had two hits to lead the Red Devils. In the last game of the season the Memorial nine neatly disposed of Boardman 8-5. John Kovach paced the Red Devils by blasting a triple and two singles while Babe Maddick collected 4 singles. Memorial got good pitching from Rudy Arlow.
