Bob Kennedy was the point getter on the team, with Lee Bobo, Leif Cogar, Bill Vrable, and George Gulu making up the first Five , By Bobby Hassey BASEBALL In the Diamond sport, the Red Devils, coached by Al Centofante, enjoyed a better than average season with six wins as against five losses, The aggregation was greatly hampered by costly injuries, especially in the pitching department. Foremost among the injured was Gus Schreiber, one of the hurlers in the County, who was out almost half of the season as a result of a back injury, which he suffered in the early stages of the season. Ted Kats Katula led the way in the batting department, with a neat average of 1387, being followed by Frank Dravecky and Gus Schreiber, each having .352 and .318 respectively. The team as a whole was credited with a average of .250. With the return of many regulars, the Devils should sport one of the most formidable teams ever assembled, and the boys should have a fine chance of competing in the State finals at Columbus. With the completion of the season, Coach Centofanti will have completed his seventh year at the helms of the Red Devil nine,'. FELICITATIONS By BOB HASSEY Congratulations to our victorious Basketball quintet and hats off to coach Jim Rich to whom we must give credit for the showing of his charges during the past season. After a previous season spotted with too many defeats, this year's heart warming victories served as a tonic to the despirited student body of good old Memorial High whose hope it was to see their team come to the top with a shining record. There is no denying that when hope has its inning, the guidance of a wide awake coach can accom-- plish even the seemingly impossi- ble. VARSITY FOOTBALL By TONY Piuoiua Tabbed by the local press and radio as the class of the district on the basis of a 13-0 victory over Woodrow Wilson in a 15 minute pre-season warm up tilt, the Red Devils never lived up to expectations and in the words of Coach Johnny Knapic, thc 1948 season is one we would all like to forget. Losses to Chaney, East and Struthers were the bitterest in a season that saw the Knapicmen drop 6 while winning only 4. The Red Devils got off on the wrong foot when they dropped a 33-7 decision to Chaney, this was the worst loss at home in 18 years. A pass combination, Joe Colonna to Frank McPhee plus the running of George Adams proved disastrous for the Red Devils. A pass, Tony Duponty to Marion Swain was the Satan's only retaliation. Then on successive Fridays the Red Devils looked like they had found themselves when they downed Ursuline 18-7 and a powerful Niles eleven 13-6. The improved play of fullback Chet Chwalik highlighted both frays, which were played at home. Next the Campbellites journeyed across the state line to Farrell where while playing without four regular starters they dropped a 19-0 decision. With their only offensive splurge of the season the locals met and trounced a game Girard Hi eleven 26-12. Chwalik and Swain bore the brunt of the attack. Following the Girard tilt the local boys dropped four decisions in a row. A 67 yard pass play with 5 seconds remaining spelled defeat for Red Devils in the Akron West fracas. Frank Fanelli traveled 83 yards on a reverse to send Memorial into a 7-6 lead to set the stage for the most spectacular finish ever seen on the local gridiron. A 3 day trip to Springfield meant the 4th defeat in 7 games, for the luckless local eleven. Trailing 7-0 late in the fourth quarter, Jack Wasko and Fanelli led an 80 yard drive with Wasko going over from the three. His plunge for the point, however, failed. Final score 7-6 Springfield. Youngstown East then measured the Satanmen 12-6 when Ralph Corso gal- loped 70 yards to score in the last 3 minutes. Chwalik scored after a 97 yard local drive early in the first quarter. A whirling dervish named Bernie Skvarka led the Struthers Wildcats to their first win over Memorial since 1930. Pouring it on from start to finish the down river eleven ended upon the long end of a 34-13 count. Skvarka tallied 3 times for the Wildcats while Chwalik and Hank Shepas scored for the Red Devils. For the second season in a row the finals were played in a sea of mud. Chwalik's 25 yard gallop in the second quarter was enough to trim a good Steubenville Central eleven 6-2. BASKETBALL The Memorialites playing under the capable coaching of Jim Rich, opened the season by downing a strong Cleveland Benedictine five, 33-28. Only to lose to Niles in a thrilling overtime 49-50. The Richmen then broke back into the winning column by defeating North 39-37 at North. The defeat at Brookfield in which the Ri-chmen were defeated in a double overtime by the score of 49-52. This was the beginning of a three game losing streak, in which a regal Chaney five beat Memorial 49-38. South High also gained a victory by defeating the Richmen 28-36 at the Field House. Then on the upgrade the Richmen downed Alliance 34-30. Memorial then upset a rival Struthers five, 38-31. At the half season mark the Riehmen defeated Fitch, to boast a 5-4 record. Memorials win- ning streak was then snapped by an underdog Ursuline five, 50-40. Lowellville downed Memorial 23-31, in a low scoring game. The East five, scoring at will, defeated the Richmen 47-28. Following this the Richmen had no trouble downing a weak Wilson five, 45-26. Steubenville then defeated the Richmen by a slim margin of 49-44. The Richmen then defeated a much favored Sharpsville five, 49-38, and going on they defeated Hubbard 62-24. Then for the second time Memorial defeated Struthers 48-40, and ended an impressive season by defeating Boardman 60-41. The Richmen scored 745 against 696 of the opponents.
