THINGS T0 REMEMBER By Rose Leombruno The first days of school have now gone by, Although we were children we all did try The days at first seemed very long, But now I wonder where they've gone. The first two years were the longest it seems, But when I look back it looks like a dream The last two years went by very fast Just when l got to know all the class. Three minutes from class to class Was one of the fastest times that passed Although we were piled with homework at night A diploma we are getting for winning the fight. Thanks to our teachers we say from our hearts Their work was one of the hardest parts Saying goodbye is a difficult task, Especially to such a wonderful class. This group of boys and girls have the responsibilities of seeing that the Memo, our school paper, reaches you at the time ot publication. Students are chosen from home rooms to undertake this task. They are under the supervision ot Mr. Nolti. Row l-Lett to right-Josephine Frazzini, Carol Katula, Doris Farrior, Sylvia Prassinos, Betty Ann Fitfick, Louise Noble, Mary Cibulas. E FOOTBALL By Chuck Koutsourais The jinx which East cast upon the Red Devils last year was still riding high when they inaugurated their season by dropping a hard fought battle to Niles l3-6. Davis of Niles highlighted the game when he in- tercepted Ted Volsky's aerial and raced 87 yards without a hand being laid on him, to score the touchdown which broke the local boys' backs. The following Friday night Memorial be- came involved in a rough battle with the then highly regarded Chaney squad. After see-sawing throughout most of the game the Red Devils managed to push across the only score of the game to defeat Chaney 6-O. The aforementioned jinx came back in full stride when the Memorialites lost to Ursuline by the depressing score of 34-6. Swain raced half the length of the field for the Hellmen's only score while Zippy Morrocco had a field day with three 6- pointers for the fighting Irish . Seven days later the Campbellites dropped still another game to a stubborn Farrell eleven. The Red Devils led practi- cally throughout the entire ballgame by six points but in the dying seconds of playing time Farrell scored on a desperation pass. Their place kick split the crossbars. lt was during this ballgame that Wes Hodge proved his worth by playing a brilliant de- fensive game of football. Score: 7-6. With a season's record of l-3 the Knapic- men next had to face one of the top teams in the state, Steubenville Big Red. Unde- feated Big Red had blood in their eyes because of a setback handed them by Me-- morial last year and it looked as though they would have their revenge on the luck- less Campbellites. But as lady luck would have it the local boys scored twice in the early stages of the game and left the over- confident Big Red combination bewildered. Before they had completely recovered the game was half over and they were still trailing. A Dennis Katsaras to Marion Swain pass netted a third touchdown while Big Red reached pay dirt but twice, Score' I9-l3. The game was termed as the upset of the season by state wide sports circles. That victory alone was compensation enough for the earlier losses suffered by Knapic's boys. ' A jnnfball Top-Nolfi, Kust, Spadefor, Martinko, J. Vrable, Williams, Duponty, Kissel, Muzevich, E. Getting back to their winning ways they next met and defeated Cleveland John Adams l2-6 in a hard fought contest. Steubenville Catholic Central was their next victim. Al Kovach plunged over from the three yard line after Swain, the Me- morial luminary, and Jack Washko set up the scoring play. The final score was 7-O. Youngstown East was then measured by the unstoppable Red Devils who scored twice while East despite their efforts re- mained scoreless. With their hopes high, the Struthers Wildcats tried in vain to break the fifteen year jinx which the Hellmen of Campbell hold over them. Memorial's down river arch rivals haven't beaten us in fifteen years but nevertheless they keep coming back, which shows good sportsmanship. After traveling l2O miles to Johnstown, Pa. in the rain, the team participated in a game of football on a baseball field con- verted into a football field which resembled a sea of mud. The mud was 6 inches deep and made maneuvering hazardous. Both teams were handicapped and were unable to score. JUNIOR FOOTBALL The Junior Grid men, having faced the toughest of competition, managed to eke out two victories out of the season's sched- uled eight games. Although the boys were green most of them showed promise. Jeff London who scored most of the points for Mr. Wansack's Red men, is looked upon as a future luminary, Con- sidering the many handicaps which Mr. Wansack had to cope with he feels that the boys have done a good job. JUNIOR BASKETBALL Coach Centofante's junior hoop stars proved themselves capable of finding the range luring tight spots, and that varsity coach Rich needn't worry about talent for several years to come. Dom Musitano was the outstanding player and leading scorer, The team which won the majority of their contests against the counties top junior teams was highly regarded in local sports circles. Bmnbad R. . X .- - . QL. A N, The Memorial baseball team finished the season with an impressive mark of 9 wins and two losses. Bowing only to Struthers and Chaney, the Red Devils proved themselves an efficient aggregation. The team was paced by the superb pitching of Dave Krotky and Gus Schriber, who had a record of 4-l and 3-l respectively. Bob Hoffman and Vansuch augmented the pitching staff with their proficient hitting. Under the versatile hand of coach Centofante the boys became increasingly smoother in their manner of handling themselves. Another bright spot in the picture is the abundance of underclassmen on the team. This fact promises capable teams in the future. Most of the boys natural- ly had no previous experience but under the expert tutelage of Mr. Maro and Mr. L. Parenti they developed rapidly and made respectable showings against all competi- tion. The outstanding track personality on the team is Marion Swain, the flashy football star. This speedster is faster than any schoolboy in the district. He ranks second only to Clifford of Canton McKinley for statewide laurels. Marion, who runs the 100 yd. dash in 9.9 seconds was undefeated in the season's scheduled track meets. Although the track team was up to par the field team seemed to have been lacking in scoring power and that accounted for the mediocre showing of the team. jmck Top Left Corner Dennis Katsaras Board Jumping 22 Ft. 8 Inches Upper Left Corner Hasapes chucking the shot put Center S. At all times they possessed an undying and contagious faith in our teams. The girls are Jessie Shiffauer, Mary Ann Matosky, Mary Ann Perno, June Zetts, Francis Truban, Loretta Brayer and Betty Carney. These enthusiasts have z8a.4AQtball our respect and gratitude. Opening the season by dropping a 59 to 38 decision to the Cleveland Benedic- tine Cagers, Memorial's court men dis- appointed a great many of their followers who had high hopes for a victory. Unperturbed, the Red Devils came bounc- ing back toppling Niles 28 to 26-one of the two losses suffered by the Trumbull County five. Following that triumph Memorial eked out a 34-33 win over Yo. East. The Red Devils were then humbled by Chaney 44- 32. A scoreless 3rd quarter spelled defeat for the hardwood boys. Memorial then launched a four game winning streak dur- ing which they measured Steubenville B. R, 46-40, Lowellville 63-6l fin a double over- time gamel, Ursuline 56 to 39, and arch- rival Struthers 46-43. Following this string of wins Memorial lost to a determined underdog Fitch quintet 50-44. Although the Red Devils won 2 games in a row, immediately following this setback, the Fitch game seemed to start a general decline in team efficiency on luck. The two victims were Warren 45-43 and North 43-27. Then Memorial was startled in a surpris- ing upset at the hands of a Wilson five whose only claim to recognition was the possession of a remarkably poor record. Really on the skids the Richmen lost to Boardman 54-52, Alliance 43-37 and Steu- benville Central 25-32. Regaining some of this spark the team turned in a sparkling performance by spanking city Champs Youngstown South 33-29. Following that game they soundly trashed the hopeless Newton Falls team 60-23. Although the boys defeated their bit- terest rivals, Struthers, in a previous game, they dropped a 42-36 contest in the oppos- ing team's gymnasium. Bow ' jj. A U The Memorial bowling team, coached by Mr. Komarc, wound up in a tie for third place with W. Wilson in the district High School Tournament. Chaney took second place by l6 pins and South copped the first place laurels. ELLY SULICK ROSALIA NECKO AROUND THE WORLD - FIVE YEARS FROM GRADUATION By Duke Borak and WiIIie Livosky Hi There-Remember the many times we've taken imaginary trips Around the School! Well then won't you join us in a trip Around the World? Before starting our journey, let's visit our own fair city. Mildred Pezell is now teaching the art of giggling at Memorial. This is a required subject in the Busi- ness Course. Johnny Texter is the new advisor of the Memo. John is going to try to compete with the Youngstown Vindicator. The new owner of the Campbell Hardware is Esther Shiller. Esther is trying to promote Big Business. Andrew Redmond is preacher at Redmonds Gospel House. Nice going Andy. We knew you could do it. Dolly Hudran is owner of the Campbell Florists. Her store is in the Gemmaes building on the Square in Campbell. Something new has been added, Didi Dalles- sandro. Since graduation day she has grown to 6' 7 . lAnd we used to call her shorty.l Our next stop is Youngstown the suburb of Camp- bell. While in Youngstown, those Livosky fans scratched Willie to shreds so I took him to St. Elizabeth's Hos- pital to see B. J. Brayer. B. J. is now head nurse, and she made Willie well again. We decided we had some shopping to do, so off to Kress's we went. lt's the Saks Fifth Avenue of Youngstown now. There, we had a little squabble with one of the clerks, and the manager was called. She was none other than Mary Poulos. Willie was thirsty after this ordeal, so down to the dairy we went and found that the new Supervisor of the lsaly Dairy Stores was our own Margie Mraz. She has really worked her way up. Golly, Willie, we never got beyond dishwashing at Isaly's. Before leaving Youngstown we stopped at the New M. H. S. Club. lt's the nite club just opened by Nicky Comsia. Only soft drinks are served. A wonderful floorshow, featuring Andy Gonda's tap-dancing. With the great Magician Blackston Gourlas, as the added attraction. Our next stop was in New York, we flew, by way of the Model Tin Can. Our first stop in New York was the Powers Model Corporation. Willie enjoyed watching the models so, we spent the entire day at the agency. While there we saw Jane Koly modeling the new-styled bathing suit. l finally dragged him away. That evening we went to the Waldorf Astoria. Cab Calloway and his orchestra furnished the entertain- ment featuring Clarence Lyons on the bass fiddle and G. Scott on the french horn and Freddy Wilson on the slide trombone. Later in the evening Vaughn Monroe and his or- chestra played a few selection, with the new singing sensation Mary Smiley, doing the vocal honors. The next day we went to see the New York Yankee vs. Cleveland Browns football game. lt was a thrilling game, but I didn't understand a bit of it, and Willie was no help explaining the game. Ted Zippy Volsky scored 5 touchdowns. On one run he sprinted 99 9fl 0 yds. Next day, just like a woman, l changed my mind and decided we'd head west for California. So on our way to Hollywood we stopped at a filling station for a checkup. Willie needed the checkup, and l still don't know why they checked that old Model Tin Can we borrowed from N. A. C. lt was the biggest gas station we had ever seen. To be exact it was a city block in size. The name of it was Petso's A to Z Service. While in Chicago we dropped in on a lecture. To our surprise the lecturer was, the famous historian George Climes. And he has a beard now!! At last we reached Hollywood and watched the Horvatt Studios filming their new love-drama Her Secret Heart starring Lydia Fazekas and George Fallas. Directing it was Bob Horvatt owner of Horvatt Studios. Designing the costumes was Madame Vaporis. Jim Adams was in charge of all scenery and electrical fixtures. But we couldn't find Miss Fulton, so Willie decided she must have given up trying to make actors out of students from M. H. S. News Flash!!! Over station W. I. F. from Alaska. Joe Kominak is still wearing his long, white under- wear. Don't blame you, Joe. lt's so cold up there. Now Willie changed his mind, so Bongo here we go again. On our trip to Africa we bumped into our old friend, Clay Garvin, Commander of the U. S. Naval Fleet in the Pacific. You know, Clay started in the Naval Reserves. As we arrived in Africa we met Chuck Koutsourais coming in from one of his big game expeditions. Chuck himself killed l elephant, 5 lions, l6 tigers and 2 cobras. Knowing we'd surely see someone we knew in the Circus, we stopped at one of those side shows. To our surprise there was Gus Alexander playing his horn and surrounded by a dozen dancing snakes. Gus always was willing to take risks, even in our 6th and 7th Period Physics Class. At the village of Ubango , the largest village in Africa, we were invited to have dinner with the Sultan. We arrived and were announced. There he was, to our utter amazement, the little man who wasn't there, Steve Dubaj surrounded by a harem of beautiful young girls. On our return trip home we stopped in London, England. We were in time to hear and see the World's Famous Opera Star lrene Kotis. Maybe, we'd have gone on forever but the old Model Tin Can just couldn't cross the ocean, or climb any mountains so Willie and I decided we'd come home and try the Trip Around the World in five more years. Maybe we'lI see you the next time. Be looking for us won't you? See you around. Duke and Willie. Who on earth can scream that loudly? Why it's only Miss Sheldon tlrene Furin, Rose Neckol, and Jimmy Hunter is the cause of it all. Him and his frogs! Jimmy Hunter and Hank Robbins cer- tainly do get into jams, both off and on stage. Hank Uohnny Vaporisl Robbins almost drove the cast director and assistant direc- tor to destruction, because he just never was on time for his cues. The two little Ellies had a time being sweet to Jerry Washburn since they had frogs bothering them at all times. Who ever could believe Pat Komarc would portray Mrs. Greene, the way she does. It took a lot of giggling and practice to do it tho. Mr. Hunter, Jimmy Adams had the entire cast in stitches with his wise re- marks, given under his breath just for the benefit of the cast and not Miss Fulton. No wonder we got comments and he didn't. That bed warmer, oh boy, did that give us trouble. lt's never to be found when needed, and we never will really know what a bed warmer is used for, we used it for just about everything. And Mary Rosemary Fray Hunter was always afraid to embrace her son Jimmy Gosh, Bill won't bite you, was what Miss Fulton kept telling her. Oh yes, remember Dead Pan - alias Pete Alexoff alias Jerry Washburn. Won der why he never would smile, at the cor rect time? As Miss Fulton said, he certainly did alright back stage!! We're hoping that Darlene Gloria' Helsel is as good the night of the play as she has been back stage. Remember when we painted? Oh brother' lt wasn't the painting, but trying to keep the girls in the cast out of the paint. Well here's hoping the play is a success Congratulations to the cast of The More the Merrier , June l948. By Duke Borak ASK FOR...
