She went out of her way many times so that we might be pleased. There is no earthly. way in which we might compensate her for her efforts and devotion. She will always linger in our hearts with our fondest memories of high school. S. Can you imagine yours truly keeping her big mouth SHUT? , JANUARY SENIOR ASSEMBLY By hAargaret Skurna When talk of the Senior Assembly began, we, like many classes that preceded us, said we were going to be fully prepared weeks ahead of time. Well, certain com- plications arose. ln spite of that fact we began to write skits and cast them long before the assembly was to take place. All the skits presented were originals writ- ten by Thomas Klimko. After Christmas vacation, we got down to brass tacks and put the acts together. We held rehearsals to the last minute and finally, on January l7, it was presented. To give you an idea of what type of entertainment was in store, a group of Se- niors sang a hello song. It would have appeared to be a 'line of chorus girls but in the middle were none other than Frank Facciobene and Rudy Tofill The main part of the program finally began. The stage setting was that of a night club, even to the extent of having customers at the tables. For the conveni- ence of the patrons we had a hat check booth ably operated by Loretta Rich. Also there was the cigarette girl, Irene Lambri- anos. Her costume attracted quite a bit of attention. The first number was played by the one- and-only all-girl orchestra led by Carmela Lanzo. lt featured Mary Saraukis on the trumpet with Hoagy CarmichaeI's Star- dust . il could have sworn it was T. Dorsey playingll Then the procession of class talent Qi began. Such acts as the rendition of Shortnin' Bread by Paul Testa, Frank Facciobene and Rudy Tofil, and the one featuring Carmel Frazzini as a mind reader made a hit. Somethingunexpected usually happens at such a show. George Niciforos provided all the surprises. Peanuts, Popcorn and Candy enacted by Mary Ann Dukat, Car- mela Lanzo and Carmel Frazzini was an enjoyable novelty act. No assembly would be complete without a selection by Thomas Klimko and his fa- mous violin. Also among the talented was Dolores Hodge, class soprano. A roller skating act with Carmel Fraz- zini as the featured skater ended the pro- gram assisted by Frank Facciobene and Rudy Tofil. Margaret Skurna isome un- talented creature who tried to skate? also appeared in the act. The class song written by Paul Testa was sung by the class. The group was led by Mary Biros and Julia Dalessandro. By the way, we mustn't forget to mention that our class president, Mike Kushma, acted as master of ceremonies. - FAMOUS QUOTATIONS By Eva Fakhs Now Listen ........................ DeSanto THE SENIOR PLAY The Senior Play chosen for presentation by the January I9-47 class was A Credit to the Family. Its tremendous success made it a credit to Memorial. The rehearsals held no pleasant prospects for the big night. It was especially difficult for those who were not veterans of the Red 81 Black. But Miss Fulton's efforts reaped great rewards on the big night. The old game of Boy-catch-girl was played by Mary Biros and Paul Testa who played the parts of Trudy Jones and Jerry Stone. Jean Dubyak displayed heretofore hidden acting ability as Mrs. Stone. Thomas Klimko ably filled the note of her spouse. Mike Kushma's characterization of The He-Man added color to the play. Eva Faklis portrayed the part of his ardent and devoted admirer. The most memorable performance was given by Frank Facciobene as Elliott. It was a true life portrayal. Julia Dalessandro as Mary Ann Stone was the object of his affection. Julia along with Agnes Brosko, Irene Lambrianos and Loretta Rich comprised the all-girl baseball team which became known for more than their ability on the diamond. The object of all the conflict was Master Robert Tyson, Momma Tyson's little dear. Tony DeSanto playing the part of Robert made it a vivid portrayal with his colorful ad libbing. Yours truly was able to detect it because she read the script. Mrs. Tyson 'was played by Joy De Pietro who displayed a woman's gift of gab. The Roy Rogers of the play was Louis Toti, the state trooper. lt's hard to comment on any one brilliant performance because they were all so out- standing. lt was the combined efforts of all the cast members which made it so outstanding. ' By Margaret Skurna THE PROSPECT BEFORE US Today the youth of the world stands on the treshold of life. Not life in the usual sense of the word, but rather a life which denotes T1 true realization of the individual's worth and his relation to civilization. To say that the world of today is materialistic is a banality. Modern philosophies and ideologies propound the necessity of being realistic , idealism is for the intellectually decadent. Modern society seems to condone hypocrisy and subterfuge as intrinsic to success. Those found fuilty of indulging in fantasies of idealism are mentally crucified and subjected to the same type of ribaldry that Christ endured when He was mocked and scourged. The modern prophets exhort us to be wary of truth, morality and religion. History has taught us that this thing we call civilization is the result of countless centuries of blood and carnage. Millions of people were sacrificed at times to enable civilization to take one slight, almost imperceptible, step forward. The groundwork of civil- ization lies in the fruits of the labor of those who, armed with a vision, courageously ven- tured to refute the contemporary theories and practices, and pointed the way to something better. So let it be with us today. We must be wary of the false prophets who disclaim the very foundations of civilization to be archaic monstrosities. Materialism and idealism are incompatible, a choice must be made. Materialism stands for wealth, power and glory, idealism stands for truth, tolerance and faith in mankind. This is the prospect before us. I THANK YOU, MEMORIAL CAN YOU IMAGINE As Seniors, we face Commencement Day with mingled emotions. Let me explain. When we en- tered Memorial as a group, we were eager to learn the ropes . We wondered what it was like to be seniors. We thought that seniors were God's favorite creatures. To us l2th grade spelled Heaven. Now, as seniors, we know better. We know now that with the coming of Commence- ment Day, come many hopes and fears. We under- stand, too, the meanings of our mottos- Not the end, but the beginning and Manhood, not Scholar- ship, is the first aim of Education. We feel now that we have grasped a little of the meaning of this thing called life. We have learned how to get the most from life by putting our most into everything we do. And all our teachers and sponsors may rest assured that their efforts, put forth so unselfishly, to develop our minds and characters, have not been wasted en- tirely. I Anne Marie D'Agostino JUNE CLASS SONG THE THINGS WE DID AT MEMORIAL To the tune of The Things We Did Last Summer We'll cherish memories Of our Memorial High, Of classrooms, socials, teachers and our friends, The things we did at Memorial, We'll remember as time goes on. The Freshmen in the hall, The Sophomores on the ball, The Juniors, future grads of 48, Our class of 47, We'll remember Memorial High. The parties and the prom, The football games we won, We'll miss them and the study-halls, Our high school days are gone, And now we shall go on, Remembering Memorial High. And now the time has come For us to bid Adieu To our dear beloved Alma Mater We'll miss and think of you often As we remember Memorial High. The Devils, playing host to one of the toughest schedules in their history, racked up seven consecutive triumphs before they tasted the bitter fruit of defeat. The initial loss was administered by East High, Memorial's long standing jinx rival. The teams that fell before the powerful Red Devil joggerut were Warren, Ursuline, Chaney, Farrell, Steu- benville Big Red , Clev. West Tech, Niles and Struthers. The opening game with Warren was one in which the hometown crew had to practi- cally do the impossible in order to win. With only five minutes of play remaining and still lagging by a 7-O count, the Red Devils struck in lightning light fashion as they crossed the pay off stripe twice. Junior Matosky's accurate heave to End Walt Chwalik, in the last minute of play, was the clincher, Matosky made the first T. D. from one yard out. A huge multitude of fans, numbering well over l5,000, watched the rugged Red Devils pound out a l9-I2 victory over a hitherto undefeated Irish aggregation in the second game of the season. Ursuline scored first early in the opening frame on a surprise pass. The Knapikmen then came roaring back a few minutes later to tally, Bennie Parker lugging the oval over. The Irish added another marker in the second quarter to again take the lead. Me- morial waited until the last chapter to open up with a blistering running attack that completely baffled the Ursulinites. Randy Tofil, with two touch- downs, and Ralph Goldston with one, ac- counted for all the scoring. The jinx Pennsylvania teams have held over Coach Knapik's great elevens was finally shattered as the Satanmen emerged victorious over a fighting Farrell aggregation, 20-6. Bennie Parker's 61- yard touchdown sprint and Ralph Gold- ston's two markers highlighted the triumph, The fracas with Steubenville Big Red was a thriller from start to finish, both teams battling fiercely for every inch of ground gained. John Matosky's quarter- back sneak from 5 yards out climaxed a Devil drive originating on the Steub. 34. Ralph Goldston, spearheading another Me- morial push to the Big Red six, swept around end for the tally. The final score was: Memorial l3 - Steubenville 6. Jnnilzall ,Squad - if i'1fnY?i'E again The Junior grid eleven where all pigskin aspirants get their baptism of high school football participated in the Mahoning Valley Junior Scholastic Football League and after the final contest had been decided the Season's record showed the frosh had dented the win column 4 times while both tying and losing 2. Victims of the home crew were Boardman, Warren St. Mary's, Girard, and Youngstown East. The future varsity hopefuls of the years to come, suffered their losses to Struthers by a l4-7 count and to Warren Central 7-0, Both battles were hard fought and it was not until the final gun had gone off that the opposition were assured of victory. In the Struthers fracas, Steve Bednarik took the opening kickoff and streaked 97 yards to paydirt. This was the longest iaunt of the season, Wasko plunged the extra point which, however, was all the scoring the boys could provide for while Struthers went on to score l4 points and snared the win. On numerous occasions the Devils were touchdown bound but failed to capitalize. Central squeezed in their scores while holding the Ciolimen scoreless. Two games ended in a deadlock. One was the season lid lifter that pitted our boys against a strong Warren East aggregation, which ended in a 6-6 tie, while the other came against Warren West where both Memorial and their opponents failed to tally. The most impressive win was the victory over Warren St. Mary's 2446. Scatback, Frank Finelli, scored 4 touchdowns in this fray, all on long runs. The Red Devils failed on 4 conversions. Finelli's field day came behind impeccable blocking on the part of his mates. Girard went down in defeat 7-6, East 8-O and Board- man 18-O. Jack Wasko, Ray Bragalone, and Frank Finelli showed they are-'definitely varsity material and will give a good account of themselves in spring practice. Wasko, the team captain, is a rugged fullback, Finelli's a fleet footed halfback while Bragalone calls the signals with varied choices. Harry Glasser, a fine center, may also develop into a varsity man. Jeff London, a fast halfback, is also a fine pigskin trouter but still has one more season of junior eligibility. The team was ably coached by Tony Ciolli and Buck Nolfi. RECORD 'viemorial Opponents 6 Warren East ..... . 6 l8 Boardman ......... O O Warren West .......... The Junior cage quintet was comprised of ci group of boys who had little or no court experience. When Mr. Cebula brought lettermen Ray Bragalone and Ted Katula, two 9A's who had half o semester of Junior ball remaining over to the reserve squad this left coach Al Centofante with the task of building an entire new team. Centofante solved this problem by building his team around Big John Wasko and Lazo Millich. The team went on and finished the season with an enviable record of nine wins against eight losses. Guy De- Santis, Bob Saulters and Mike Stahara filled out the remainder of the starting five. Frank Finelli, and Steve Dubaj also saw plenty of action. Outstanding highlights of the season were in the games against Warren Central and Hubbard. The boys whipped Central 46-33, but mainly behind the uncanny shooting of forward Lazo Millich who caged 24 tallies. ln the Hubbard contest Wasko shaded Millich's record shoving 27 points through the meshes by zipping them in from all angles. ln tour- ney play the Red Devils downed Howland 2l-l9 but were ousted by Hayes Jr. High 37-24. The Red Devil Diamond squad, under the auspices of Coach Al Centofante, fin- ished the season with o record of 3 wins against 8 setbacks. This marked the sec- ond year in succession that baseball has been on the school athletic curriculum. Mineral Ridge furnished the opposition in the curtain raiser and eked out a 7-6 victory over the home nine. Larry Brosko rapped out three hits in his futile effort to bring victory to his comrades. The battery was composed of Gus Schrieber and John Matosky. In the second fray Worren racked up a 3-O win over the locals. Inability to hit proved to be the weak link between vic- tory and defeat. Joe Antol, who alternated at third base and pitch, allowed the enemy 6 hits - all enemy runs being unearned. ln the following game North handed the Memorialites their third straight reverse, winning by a 5-4 count. Gus Schreiber and Frank Dravecky, a youthful freshman, sophomore battery were pitted against Farrell in the next clash, and as a result the Red Devils came home victorious for the initial time - shellack- ing the Night Riders 7-2. Johnny Bartos and Joe Antol were the big guns at the plate, both slashing triples. Bob Hoffman's three sofeties-a single, double and triple-went into the waste basket, the Satanmen losing 5-4 at Lowell- ville. Larry Brosko also chipped in with 3 safeties, while Gus Schreiber hit for the circuit. Joe Antol was on the knoll and suffered the loss. The team journeyed to Warren for the next game where the stage was set for lContinued on Page 833 --I The cheerleaders under the supervision of Miss Brayer, have done much in creating a zestful fighting spirit in our football and basketball teams. Continued from page 78 tacks and whipped Youngstown North 54- 34. Big John Constantino and Walt Chwalik provided the scoring punch with l4 and IO points respectively. In the fracas that followed the squad lost to a well bal- anced Sharon team 38-30. The Hardwood lads then went on a spree that won them 2 clashes-Wilson and Boardman being the victims. Wilson was drubbed 37-24 with the capable aid of center Constantino who chalked up l8 points. Boardman was defeated by a lO point margin, 57-47. Pete Kornyak went on a scoring rampage and caged 22 points, this being the highest number of points any of our boys could contribute in a single game all season. Chwalik chipped in with ll markers. Ralph Goldston sang his swan song in this contest. His fine defensive play, especially on rebounds was missed during the remainder of the campaign. The winning streak then hit a snag and the results were that the Red and Black lost their next 4 games to South. Warren. Struthers and Newton Falls. Faulty play after the fourth period automatic time out lost the South battle 46-35, while the iden- tical reason was responsible for the loss of the return engagement to the Struthers Wildcats 57-40. Newton Falls put on a Frank Meriwell finish to win 49-48, with Kornyak tossing in l5 points. Warren led throughout and 'captured a 63-34 victory. These defeats were in mind when the squad traveled to Brookfield. The team got sweet revenge over the previous years trimming, trouncing them 54-33. Walt Chwalik took offensive honors as he caged l9 points while Kornyak and Constantino each snagged l2 apiece. Winding up the season Chaney snared a victory 43-26. ln Tournament play Chaney repeated its regular season victory win- ning 55-l9. This setto ended the scholas- tic court careers of George Rosian, Evie Butler and Bob Vansuch, who will grad- uate. One consolation of the year is that while losing, the team was vastly improved over last years auint. Varsity Baseball lContinued from Page Sll the second engagement between the two ball clubs. When the last strike had been called the Presidents emerged as the vic- tors but this time victory wasn't as rosy though winning 5-4. Gus Schreiber ap- peared on the mound for the fifth time in 7 games but poor fielding on the part of his mates blew the ball game. Schreiber proved he can hit as well as he can pitch, continuing his admirable hitting spree with 2 doubles and a single. John Matosky han- dled the catching chores. The next fracas went l4 innings, the Red Devils snoring the victory by a one run margin defeating Liberty 7-6. ln the four- teenth frame Bob Vansuch scored the win- ning run on a perfectly executed squeeze play with John Bartos handling the sacri- ficing job. Schreiber was on the slab and gained the victory, Frank Dravecky handled the backstopping assignment masterfully. The third defender to go down in the bitter fruit of defeat at the hands of the Centofantemen was our traditional down the river rival, Struthers. Sharpsville shut out the Red and Black 2-0 in the next marathon. George Petro got 2 hits but to no avail. Slender Gus Schreiber twirled and suffered the loss. Two flashy and highly touted Youngs- town squads, namely East and Chaney wal- loped our basebollers in the final two clashes. East grabbed l4 runs on l4 hits and went home with a l4-2 victory. The Westerners scored the same amount of markers gaining the victory l4-l. 'I947 Schedule Varsity Football Squad lContinued from Page 76l West Tech eleven. Goldston and Parker divided scoring honors with two touchdowns apiece. The Red and Black then met Niles on the Dragons' own stamping grounds. and walked off the field at game's end with a 20-0 triumph to their credit. ln the eighth game disaster struck in the form ofa jinx -the East High squad. Memorial, doped to win by two touchdowns, failed to score for the first time in the season. Over 8,000 spectators sat stunned in the stadium as they watched the Red Devils desperately try to cross the pay-off stripe, but to no avail. Time and again the Knapikmen were within scoring distance, only to fumble or give up the oval on downs. The Barretmen scored in the second and last chapters. Rebounding from their loss to East, the Red Devils trounced their neighboring ri- vals, the Struthers Wildcats, l9-6. Struthers took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter but Satanmen soon erased the deficit by a score and were never again headed. Ralph Goldston smashed off tackle for the first touchdown. Early in the third period sub- fullback Al Kovach, behind impeccable blocking, ran 59 yards for the second tally. A 30 yard pass, Vansuch to Chwalik, set up the Devils last score. Ralph Goldston lugged it over from the two-yard line. A speedy Steubenville Central eleven then came to Campbell and went away with a l8-0 victory for themselves.
