We are sincerely sorry that it was almost a physical impossibility to get the necessary information and pictures of all these men. Perhaps at a future date, as more vital statistics come in from the War Department we may be able to publish the complete list. ' For the present all we can do is hope and pray that they have not died in vain - but that with their life's blood, which they gave so freely, the fu- ture peace of the world shall be written in letters which shall never fade from the minds of men. Warady, G. M. Opretza and John Sajnovsky. In the summer of I942 the county was redivided into five districts. Campbell was included in Board No. 2 along with the entire East side of Youngstown and Lowellville, under the Chairmanship of Mr. Opretza. At the height of rationing, Board No. 2 helped solve the ration problems of 45,000 people. The board, located at 633 Himrod Avenue, in- cluded the following volunteer personnel: General Chairman: G. In Nov. of l945, after the pressure of war re- lieved the rationing load, the Boards were again consolidated into the Mahoning County Price Con- trol Board. Mr. Opretza is serving as chairman of Services Panel. Mr. Gary as chairman of Restaurant Panel. Mr. Sexton, Mr. Gustinella and Mr. Pressly from Campbell are still serving on these panels. Local Draft Board No. 9 Selective Service Board No. 9 was orig- inally composed of J. W. Fedor, chairman, John Ross, George Kukula, Ray Brownlee and James McCartney. Mr. McCartney's business made it impossible for him to attend the board meetings, so he resigned in April I94l. John Borak was appointed to fill this vacancy. Mr. Barak resigned in I943 and was succeeded by John Rey- nault, who is still on the board. Genevieve Schiffer was appointed as chief clerk and is still occupying that posi- tion. Post 560 was organized on March l2, l945 and meets at the Italian Hall on the corner of Penhale Avenue and Twelfth Street. The Executive Committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month. It consists of about 9,000 volumes, including novels, biographies, short stories, encyclopedias and other instruments of learning, such as the various periodicals and newspapers delivered to the library for our use. To help run the library, there are 30 student librarians who help select books and issue them out. Miss Ruth Park is the head of our library. WAR BOND CHAIRMEN J l l The war bond chairmen, under the leadership of Miss Erma I Marinelli, have contributed directly in the winning of the war. Each homeroom had a chairman and one day a week was chosen a war bond day on which stamps and bonds were pur- chased by the students. Memorial High School has participated in all war loan drives and has always gone above the set quota. In the 7th War Loan, and the Victory Loan, Memorial High received first place awards for selling bonds, in competition with all schools in the Mahoning County. STUDENT CONGRESS Each week the Student Congress of the Air , a unique radio program designed to further student interest in world affairs, visited a county school. Two of the broadcasts originated here, with Memorial students as hosts to the nine other participating schools. Pertinent topics of national and international scope, which were especially devised to awaken the interest of high school students, were debated upon. The purpose of the club is to take, develop, and enlarge pictures. Some time was spent on fundamentals of taking indoor and outdoor pictures. AERCNAUTICS The aeronautics classes were established in September of 1941 to give the students of Memorial the basic elements in the development of the aeroplane as an instrument of war and peace. Mr. Stephens has been sponsoring the class since its inception. Everytime he passes by He greets you with a simple HI Sauntering gaily, down the street, Toward his friends that he will treat. To the drugstore they will trend, Ten or twenty cents to spend, Milkshakes, sodas, candy and cokes, Drinking them and telling jokes. The jukebox in the corner stands, With records of the famous bands, Goodman, Dorsey, Krupa and Kaye, Makes him want to swing and sway. Then his best girl he will get, Because she's his one and only bet. To a number they will dance, Then get ready for that homeward prance His homework he will then complete, For the standards he must meet. S. when she was chosen one of the I2 winners in the State of Ohio in the American Legion Essay Contest. Her reward was a ten day trip to Washington, D C , all expenses paid. A WINNER EVA FAKLIS CAN WORLD PEACE BE SECURED THROUGH THE ALLIED NATIONS? lf the nations are to join together and keep peace, first and foremost they must understand one another. When World War I ended, we Americans failed to realize the fears of France and England. Our own desires to keep out of their squables were never understood by Europeans. If we are to have a real peace this time, all the people of the world, not just the scholars and statesmen, will have to understand how nations depend on each other. Otherwise, the war will have been fought but nothing will have been changed. The peace of the whole world will depend a good deal on the ability or desire of one nation to understand the hopes, the fears and needs of another, and on a mutual attmpt to find common goals. If we in America don't try to find those goals, we can never hope to help end wars. The world shall never have peace until the majority of the people understand it, believe in it, and want it. How can we, the American people, achieve this understanding? Education is the most logical reply. The only way to have peace is to keep the ideas of peace in the minds of the people. Thy must first be educated in this idea through the right kind of leadership. An international agency for education would help. We can see how flying, radio, movies, churches, the press, will make it easy to exchange ideas between countries. This can be stimulated and directed if we have a benevolent propaganda agency to help us do it. Once this process starts, people will be attracted to it, will be conscious of it until, finally, we shall have a world federal government. The establishment of a lasting peace will depend upon teamwork that will build up and maintain mutual trust and understanding among all the nations of the world. Such teamwork is being developed today among the chiefs of the Allied Nations who, more and more, are learning each other's problems firsthand. In August, l94l, we had the Atlantic Charter declaration, in August l942, the Moscow Conference, in January 1943, the Casa- blanca Conferenceg in l945, the Teheran and San Francisco Conferences, and in l946, the United Nations Council in London. All of these meetings are helping to lay the foundation for teamwork: The basis for a sound peace must include among other things, the settlement of such urgent problems as: providing food for people in the devastated areas, repatriating refugees, and building up international trade. The teamwork of the United Nations is shown again in discussions of these problems at the following meetings: The International Wheat Conference, International Monetary Conference, Economic Conferences, and Relief and Rehabilitation organizations. The basis for a sound peace also lies in various international agreements which exemplify United Nations teamwork. Typical of these is: The Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, inaugurated in l935. The aim of renewing this Act is to promote free enterprise, increased trade, increased production, improved methods of distribution, and create more abundant consumption. To live at a time of this tremendous birth and awakening in the world is the greatest privilege that any man or woman could ever have. All of us are so privileged. We can feel the future growing around all of us in the United Nations Organization. In the past, it was always said to us that world government was impossible, that it could never work. We have proved that argument to be wrong. In the United Nations we have created such a world government. To those who have said that these United Nations can never be projected beyond the war, we can say that we, as the people of the United Nations, will have the will to make it a lasting international organization.
