7-LZ RZUZIZQ . . . ,, . 4, f I , iff I MEMORIAL HIGH SCHUUIJ PUBLISHED BY SENIUR CLASSES I 9 4 I I ANDREW S. KLINKO Superintendent of Schools ' oreword , Civilization hs always inherited a rich legacy as a result of the sacrifices man made for his ideals. Ideals today must be an indispensable part of our thinking. To continue our laissez-faire attitude toward world problems is to contribute to the degeneracy of the fundamental principles of our democracy. Youth and adult cannot afford to assume that, given time, present world upheavals will harmlessly dissipate themselves. A positive, constructive, democratic way of life philosophy must be developed not only to preserve, but to continue the existence of our great democracy under favorable world conditions. The public school, which has already contributed immeasurably to the material and spiritual growth of this nation, must renew its emphasis upon those qualities of citizenship which call for great sacrifices. Only thus, can it help preserve the principles of freedom, equality, and justice bequeathed to us by freedom-loving genera- tions of the past. I ' MEMORIAL 'HIGH Dedication M. F. O'MELLAN PRINCIPAL The graduating classes of 1941 in dedicating this annual to Mr. M. F. O'Mellan, wish to express their appreciation and gratitude for his devotion to the best interests of Memorial High School and to the City of Campbell. Mr. O'Mcllan has been a lifelong resident of this city and has grown up with the present educational system. He began his own school career at the old two-room school house on the corner of Gordon and Twelfth Streets. He attended successively Gordon. Fairview, and Penhale Schools from which he was graduated in 1923. In high school, Mr. O'Mellan engaged in many activities including basketball, track, art and music. After several years of work with the Ohio Bell System, Youngstown Dry Goods, P. Bt L. E. Railroad and Boys Work under the supervision of Mr. Stephen Pronko of the Y. M. C. A. he decided to continue his education. He entered- the Cleveland School of Art. In 1930 he received his B. S. in Ed. and Art Supervision Diploma from Ohio U. After having taught for two years, he was appointed assistant principal, and in 1934 principal of Memorial High School. In 1936 he received his M. IZ. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Memorial High School is indeed fortunate to have a man of Mr. O'Mellan's leadership and understanding as its head. His close contact with the people of the city throughout his life has served to bring the school and community closer together and to create a more far-reaching understanding of the purposes and aims of Memorial High School. Under Mr. O'Mcllan's leadership and expert guidance, important progress has been made in the following: C11 reorganization of teaching staff into functioning departments 125 curriculums and courses of study C31 equalization of teachers' load through balance of classes Q43 scheduling of teachers in qualified fields CSD modernization of commencement exercises C61 reorganization and expansion of the Home Economics system, industrial and commercial arts f7l development of visual education program Q81 institution of an adequate health program for the protection of children. 1941 REVELER ' 3 ,. JUNE Four years ago, 'midst sleet and snow In rain and stormy weather. We started down, with ne'er a frown The path that brought us together. The path was long, but filled with song And playful, joyous laughter. We played and fought, and gave not a thought, To years that would come after. At games we cheered, each time we neared The goal to make a score. We took our chances, went to dances And had fun galore. These years had fled, on wings they sped, Filled with joy and cheer. And then at last, but oh, how fast, Had come our senior year. We bought our rings and other things, For which we had to pay. We laughed a lot and often fought, Within our senior play. We made a manualgour senior annual, On which we worked quite long. Like birds in a cage, we stood on the stage, And sang our farewell song. Then much too soon, on a day in June, We realized we were through. We had sent invitations, received congratulations, It was time to say adieu. And now as we part, there's a tug at our heart, And we'll creep away to cry. So good luck to you, farewell, adieu, Goodbye Memorial Hi. -Judy Megela. FAREYVE LL M151 M ORIAL Farewell to you Memorial Hi The time has come to part But 'tho we leave, we'll aways keep Your memory in our heart. With tearful eyes and broken hearts, We bid you all good bye. We fear the time is up right now, Graduation time is nigh. We want to thank our dear teachers, Who've helped us all along. They scolded now and then, you see To show us right from wrong. 18 A JANUARY To all Freshmen and Sophomores, Wfe tell you not to fear. For youill be at the top some day, rffo shed a farewell tear. Now to all you Juniors, we say Farewell, good-bye, adieuf' Don't believe the silly remarks, We have given to you. And now we are assembled here, To say our last adieu. Coach johnny Knapick's juggernaut rolled up 142 points compared to 39 for their very strong opposition. The Red Devils strong power house drives made them the re- spected foe of all opponents. Some of the features of the season were the 25-0 triumph over South, I9-0 victory over Steubenville, 7-6 win over Warren, and 45-0 shellaeking given to our rivals across the river, Struthers. The credit for turning out this year's powerful team goes to Head Coach Johnny Knapick and Ass't Coach Matt Wansack. Players who carried Memorial's for- tunes during the season were Modak, Siembieda, Ma- ceyko, Bogovich, Fortner, Cash, Barillaire, and Ciolli of the backfield. The line consisted of Skelley, Wolfe, Zuzga, Simchiek, Leone, Pacak, Franco, Ciccolelli, Keish, Shirilla, Kolesar, and Krisinski. The high scorer of the season was Harold Fortner, who scored 36 points. He was followed by Bogovich and Modak, who scored 28 and 24 points respectively. Lettermen to return to next year's squad are Skelley, NVolfe, Cash, Maceyko, Ciccolleli, Keish, Krisinski. Per- harch, Barillairc, Fortner, and Vratkovich. In clinching the eleven victories, the Red Devils amassed a total of 606 points as compared to 584 of their opponents. Memorial suffered three setbacks on their own floor and received five reverses on enemy soil. Mundsen Barillaire took the individual scoring honors in one fray, scoring I6 points in the Brookfield game. He also led the season's parade, scoring 140 points. He couldn't refrain from offering advice to anyone and everyone from the coach on clown. SITORT SHOTS Modak always liked small floors. He could last longer. Siembicda was the most nervous player on the floor for the first five minutes of every game. He ran around like a madman, but invariably settled down to some good basketball. Mundsen Barrillare would make a good astronomer. He couldn't refrain from star-gazing once or twice in every game-at a crucial moment, too. Big Bill Milutinovich, the here and there boy, finally settled down to play some real basketball. Lefty Mitulinski finally learned to use his right hand, for hand shaking-he never 'could learn to shoot with it. . PRESENTING THE OFFICIAL ALBIA MATER OF DIEMORIAI. HIGH SCHOOL LYRICS BY JUDY MEGELA Tune-Sweet Genevieve Memorial High we hold so dear 'Till life has passed its final year. The days with you will always be, To us a lovely memory. Ah Alma Mater we'll be true, We hold life dear because of you. Though one by one the year slip by, We'll cherish our Memorial High. A little girl and a little boy once went to A Little Cafe Down The Street and sat at A Table in the Corner. Soon April Played iloe Fiddle and the little boy asked the little girl Are You Having Any Fun? And the little girl replied Can I Help Ii? Soon they found themselves In A Litfle Dutch Garden. Suddenly 66 A Memorial High, Memorial High, Oh shout the name unto the sky. We love thee still we always will, All hail to thee, Memorial High. Memorial High! Memorial High! Oh let that be our battle cry. We think you're grand, best in the land, All hail to thee, Memorial High. Adopted officially jan. l, 1941. I saw A Man Pain! A Fence and If If Wasr1'.1 For The Moon, I would have trampled all over you. I soon got tried and began Leaning On The Old Top Rail and Knoekin' On Wood. I said Kiss Me Again, Goodnight Angel, Thanks For The Memory, and I Will See Yon In My Dreams. -By Ann Dimoff. ISIEMORIA I.
