I glanced around my room aT The brighT peach-colored curTains, Talling in deep Tolds wiTh hundreds oT TuTTed polka-doTs. The peach-colored lampshade and bedspread, and The silly looking liTTle doll wiTh an absurdly wide skirT-all looked aT me wiTh mocking eyes. Where was The Triendliness They had shown me on sunny days and warm nighTs? They seemed ouT oT place TonighT, in my loneliness, when The ouTsicIe was so bleak and desolaTe. I Turned quickly Trom The scornTul dec- oraTions oT The room and raised The window. The wind whipped aT my hair and senT a reTreshing spray againsT my Tace. The air was Tilled wiTh The clean, Tresh smell oT damp ground, and The glow oT waTer lay in scaTTered pools abouT The yard. IT was really beauTiTul-This scene which a Tew mo- menTs beTore I had called bleak and desolaTe. lwas noT lonely now, Tor I saw and TelT grace and charm, and There was none oT The ugliness I had earlier TelT. The nighT's beauTy really lay in The Triend- liness and undersTanding iT oTTered me. IT was in This way ThaT I learned ThaT a Thing is only as beauTiTul as The ioy and comTorT iT brings To Those who see iT. --Mary Bell CHAS. C.
