MILDRED E. HAWKS PRINCIPAL EMERITU5 Y TO THE ADMINISTRATION. FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND PARENTS OF CAMPBELL HALL ARGYLL SCHOOL Congratulations to you for your continuous success in your endeavor to create in Camp- bell Hall-Argyll one of the great schools in our country! I am very proud of you! Education to be truly education must mean not only a training in skills necessary for learning. but engendering an enthusiastic attitude toward orgainzed thinking in problem solving. the basis of evolutionary mental growth. As you well know, the urge to dare, to explore, to pioneer, is intrinsic in the nature ot mankind, including the tiniest child. Have you ever watched a katydid emerge from its amber shell? It fights, it pushes, and it struggles until it is finally free. Than it fans its miniscule wings which grow before your eyes into long, graceful wings which lift the katydld and allow it to soar away. If , in pity, you should help it to free itself while it was breaking out of its shell , it would die! It must struggle to grow . So must we all. The philosophy of too many educators would pave the way to learning by removing all obstacles. They forget that games too easy to win or puzzles too easy to solve, are bor- ing. We stultify the yearning for knowledge when we insult children by feeding them intellectual pablum. Have you ever watched how the face of a child who has solved a difficult problem glows? Of course, it is axiomatic that the challenge be within the range of the student's ability and comprehension, and that he be encouraged. Perhaps it all summed up in my favorite quotation , from Tennyson's Ulysses' ': To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield! Mildred E . Hawks
