In earnest they began practice for the tough season ahead. The season consisted of eight games, five on the home field and three away. Throughout the season had Weather and a number of injuries to players caused a hardship on the rest of the team. In spite of the misfortune the team was the runnerup for the Powder River District Football title. y ' With the end of the season came time for the glory. IBXXSIQETBALL Thirty boys reported tor basketball traininq, but Coach Lew Young cut the squad to eighteen shortly atter they reported back trom Christmas Vaca- tion. From this aroup, twelve, six ot whom were seniors, earned their letters. The Camels opened their basketball season by winnina the Tri-County Tournament at lvloorcrott on December 6. Four other nonfconterence games were played betore the old year closed, They were with Lead and Speartish, South Dakota, Torrinqton and Laramie. ln conference play, Gillette was fourth in the district. The district track was held in Sheridan on May 3. The state meet will be held at Casper on May 17. Some of the promising prospects are Don Beagle, Dean Iones, Ioe Smith, Bill Bennick, Tom Hannum, Wilbur Marquiss. CAMEL CHEERLEADERS Donna Faye Wilson, Maxine Smith, Bonnie lean Clark, Roma Rae Underwood, Phoebe Ann Fitch. Credit goes to the cheerleaders for the fine sportsmanship shown in athletic events at C. The play is a three act mystery with Newt Cooper furnishing the comedy. The owner of the half-ruined mansion which is the scene of action, disappears. His relatives are called in for the search. lt is discovered that he has in his possession a stone taken from a native tribe. Thompson, disguised as Dr. Cameron, is trying to gain control of the stone. He dies when he tries to take it from the case in which the servants placed it. Sheldon Harley discloses the fact that he is a secret agent who plans to restore the stone to its rightful owners. The Gillette Chapter won the State Championship in livestock judging, as well as having individual state honors ainong its members. Larry Cilbertz Won first place in the District F. F. A. speech contest. Throughout the war, they helped four Grecian families by sending clothing, food, etc. ln school activities they won first place in the Homecoming float contest, were well represented in the District F. H. A. Convention at Buffalo and also sponsored a Spring Mixer. Their biggest annual events are: a school board and faculty banquet: a style review: a tea for the girls' Mothers, and entertaining the eighth grade girls. S. band, under the direction of C. R. Waterman, furnishes entertainment between halves of athletic events, besides sponsoring both a Spring and a' F all Concert. Members of the band with three semesters of active service receive a letter. Those qualifying are chosen by the band committee, a newly organized group consisting of section leaders. Buffalo is host town for the district music festival this year. ln this festival, bands contest for ratings of l, II, and Ill. The what is the years national high school debate subjectf Resolved, that the Federal Government Should Provide a System ot Complete Medical Care to all Citizens at Public Expense. The debaters, under the supervision ot Bill Hayes the first semester, have been convincing other schools about the whys and whens. On December 7, l946, having decided they could logically substantiate their arguments, the debaters attended a Speech Festival at Casper. Green River was also represented. All the following trips were to South Dakota, where the debaters entered into extemporaneous speeches and debates with Lead, Sturgis, Rapid City, Custer, Hill City, and Phillip. As the school years curtain comes down on this ambitious group, Bob Waddell, a freshman, and Doran Eldridge, a senior, are members of the National Forensic League, while Verna Mae Thomas and Larry Gilbertz, both seniors, each hold a Degree ot Excellence in this same society ot public dis- cussion and debate. Bob Waddell is standing president ot the Gillette Chapter, National Forensic League, which was reorganized last year.
