THE qouas .APPLE A DANCE PAGEANT OP ANCIENT GREECE ACT I Among the hills of Mount Olympus, Juno and Jupiter are holding court. Mercury, winged messenger of the Gods, appears, bearing news of the coming marriage of Paris and Helen, two mortals favored of the Gods. In the Dance of the Wedding Feast, the Dryads express the rejoicing of the entire court. The revelry of the Gods is rudely interrupted by the threatening entrance of Pan and his elves, foreboding misfortune. i Apollo, the Sun-God, assures the Gods that despite these threats, the sun will smile upon the lovers, and the Muses promise to grace the marriage festival with their presence. At this moment Eris, Goddess of Discord, angered that she had not been invited to the wedding, enters in a Dance of Rage and threatens destruction, ACT II With the wedding feast about to take place, the Muses appear to observe if all is ready. Led by Juno and Jupiter, the procession enters. Flower girls deck the way with petals, and Helen's handmaidens dance before her. Shyly she per- mits them to draw her forward. Paris enters, followed by his band of soldiers, and we see the Wedding Dance. Just as Jupiter prepares to unite the lovers, Eris appears, and flings into the court a golden apple inscribed To the Fairestf' Jupiter offers it to Paris, declaring that he will marry the two only when the apple is disposed of with peace for all. Immediately Paris is surrounded by women claiming the apple, and as he flees in panic, Eris laughs maliciously. ACT III The women are seeking Paris, attempting to charm him. Paris is flattered by the attention, and Helen is forgotten. Alone and forlorn, she wanders in. Eris and her elves come to observe her handiwork, and dance in mockery. Cupid enters and aims his arrows at Paris, renewing in the heart of the Trojan his love for Helen. Paris realizes that for him Helen is the fairest woman, and presents to her the golden apple. -
