Is Captain Altsehul in? She is? ! I ! Hello, Miss Altschul. Er-I ,represent RONDACTS. Do you mind answering a few questions for your public? Oh thank you, that's fine! VVell, then, l'm sure that the Rons of 1934 have helped you discover what makes up a good team. VVhat do you think are essential qualities ? A spirit of cooperation and helpfulness combined with a sense of loyalty to team and teammate are fundamental require- ments. And does your team measure up to the standards you have set ? My team has been the personilication of these standards. Then what do you think of the Daek Team? They have added another page to their inimitable record of clean sportsmanship. 'llheir spirit has been worthy of their cap- tain and bus man, Mabel and Helen. 'WVell, I can see that you have a high opinion of ,Rons and Dacks alike, but haven't you a special message for your own team ?'l Naturally, l feel greatly honored that they chose me as their leader and I eouldn't help but do my best with such a dear friend and so capable a girl as Isabel for Ron bus man. I appreciate their willing cooperation and want to thank them all for being' so pleasant to work for and with. I am sure that both Rons and Daclcs alike will be interested in what you have told me. Ah, could that possibly be she ? and forward I dashed. Before she was able to turn, I had breathlessly popped my hrst question. How has the spirit of the Dack Team been this year F 'l'he Uacks, in this respect, have been un- surpassable. Each girl has displayed a most cooperative and helpful attitude towards her team-mates, as well as towards I-Ielen and myself. XNfhat have you to say to this fine team of yours? I-lere she paused, then, in a reverential tone: To them, l' can only say that in thinking me worthy and capable of being their leader. they have conferred upon me an honor l shall never forget. And to Helen? To her goes fully half the credit for this memorable smnmer. To work with so re- sponsive and helpful a 'bus man' has indeed been agreeable and I am greatly indebted to her for her loyalty. l hesitated about interrupting the ensuing refiective silence, but RoNpAc'rs must go to press. However, before I could broach the next topic, Mabel had started to speak about it. The Rons. in all our associations. have proven themselves worthy of such loyal and earnest leaders as Ruth and Isabel. First, welre taking you to the opening game of the Ron-Dack baseball series. Watch closely and you'll see Jeanne Tannenbaum out there in the pitcher's box. Wow! She pitched a hard one, but she's just warming up. Just look at Har- riette Slote jump aside when those fast ones come! It certainly takes courage to be Jeanne's catcher. It's about the middle of the game now, and the score is tied 2-2. Here comes l Helen Hirsch up to bat now. Watch the put- ting green, folks. She hit a gorgeous foul. Just straighten it out, Helen. There! She did it! Yes, but Helen Schwartz caught it at first! Too bad-one out. Jeanne seems to be invincible. She just struck out two of the Ron's best players. 'What a game! Now the Dacks are up at bat. Two men managed to get by Betty Ross's swift pitching. Now Edna Isaacs hits a gorgeous grounder and gets another Dack home as the crowd wildly cheers. That excitement you see on the sidelines is just Dack enthusiasm over the score. Jffcbezfy i Well, here is your Talking Photographer back again, to show you how Rondack's archers 'Shoot the W'orks.' There's Frankie Block just going up to the fifty-foot mark. She's shot beautifully so far, but Jeanne Tannenbaum is going to be hard to beat with a score of 170. Look at that form! She's shooting her last arrow now. Zip, there it goes-a bull's eye. Let's go over to the judges' corner and get the score. Too bad, Kons! Jeanne's won by 62 points. They tell me that a new star, Ruth Litt, has loomed Llnter' Rondack's horizon. Here are a couple of shots of the new champ, and her opponent Priscilla Wolff. You can tell by watching them in action why the score was so close, why those brand-new targets were shot full of holes by the end of the tournament. And they say that there are at least two dozen up and coming Juniors who look as if they might be future shooting stars too. 40 Duck Formation Here they come-the Dacks and the 'Day of Glory' have arrived! Ruth Litt Wins Inter rowing contest. Arline Friedlancler shows excellent form in winning Freshie boating event. Ruth Landesman, star of the meet, takes first place in diving, life-saving and Senior dash. And the Dack niermaids finally out-class the Ron by 2-l points. There's Lenore insisting the gorge is full of hot water! XVatch the girls register- ing awe as they pass those startling rock formations, Elephant's Head, Devil's Punch Bowl, the Mystic Gorge. Ah, they're leaving autographs at the unique Rock PostrOffice. Step carefully into the boat, Claire. Now, through the Rapids, and oh! aren't they in a hurry to get back to the simpler forms of nature like ice cream cones and sundaes! CWD. Tlaamzob You'll have to excuse us, friends, if the camera and I are a bit puffy, but Rondaclffs hardy mountain- eers are chasing up Mt. Pharaoh at top speed! Well, will you look at Ruth Altschul wrapped up in Izzyfs gloves! It if cold up here at the top, at that. You're right, Carol. This gorgeous view cannot be enjoyed on an empty stomach. Episode 2 starts with the Ron and .Daclc Teams marching in and viewing with bated breaths the pinning of names to the totem poles. lVIabel's and Ruth's messages are heard and old campers sing team and camp songs while the new campers begin to understand, revere, and love Rondack traditions. Episode 3 goes from the sublime to the ridiculous as Bunk A holds a cowboy camphre of dances by Ruth Landesrnan and original songs of camp life. The cow- boy games prove highly diverting. Episode 4 takes us to the land of the Redman where with great solemnity songs, poems, and stories are told by Bunk B. Then Rondack goes to bed to dream of tepces, Indian blankets, and feather head-dresses. Episode 5 transports Camp Rondack to the jungle to the beat of tom-toms and the droning of Vachel Lindsay's 'The Congof A jungle story is told and American games are played. Episode 6 shows Robin Hood and his Merry Men in Lincoln Green telling stories, playing new games and singing songs that are strangely familiar to modern, American Camp Rondack. The next episode brings to the 'Rondack campfire the ragle-taggle gypsies. We hear old gypsy songs and legends and forecasts of Rondack destinies. The last episode of 'Burn, Fire, Burn' marks the close of team competitions. The totem poles are burned and the hatchet is buried. Soft voices sing 'Rondack The Camp We Love' around the last camphre of 193sl. 48 Arty and Cmfzir Clare-Upx This is Rondack's Arts and Crafts Bunk, boys. I hope we won't have to take the door off its hinges to get your special technicolor camera into the bunk, Bob. Careful, now! Okay. Bring the camera over here. The first picture I Want is one of this painting on glass that Mildred Wolff made. Be sure you get that cleverly blended red and gold background, see how effective it is where the sun strikes the red fire coming out of the green dragor1's mouth? That's especially important. Oh, hereis another painting on glass, Judith Weiss, silhouette of a girl in a swing. 'We certainly want that. Swing your camera around this Way, Bob, so that we can get a shot of Fay lVIerson's modernistic cigarette-box and Barbara Bersohn's pewter candy-dish. How about a snap of Lucille Perlstein's leather cushion and Nanette Chan- kin's leather writing-portfolio? They're both so well done. We really need a close-up of them. I Wish We could use pictures of everything in here, but we'll just take a group-shot of these silver bracelets that Virginia Rosencrans, Isabel Schlifman, Carolyn Wolff, Shirley Greene, and Frances Block made and then welll have to go. Better take a close-up so that you can get those monograms and initials into the picture, Bob. Okay, boys, be careful of the camera as you move it out. Say, Won't we get some Fine scenic effects when we develop these? 49 5 1 f ' L I 50 L I On Location at the Romlfzck Studio Uncle Sazmfr 51' oyfloop Hello, is this the hfiarapount Studios? Let me speak to the boss. This is the production scout calling. Yes, Fve just found a wow of a Fourth of July show. Uh-huh. At Rondack. Gee, it had everything we want-colorful scenery, costumes, witty lyrics, eccentric dances. W7hat,s that? 0h yes, I have contracts prepared for the entire cast in their original parts. Wre must have Ruth Altschul as Uncle Sam and Eleanor Linder as the little girl Betty who visits his Fourth of July Toyshop. Those two red-nosed, lovesick Jumping Jacks, Isabel Horowitz and Jean Field, would make a hit in that number 'If I Could VVin a Fire-cracker Doll., l think we need those three Firecracker Dolls, too, don't you F-Lucille Simon, Carol Lewis, and Edna Kadin. Wihat's that? Yes, there's a balloon doll act that Sonya Benjamin did very well. And of course we want the Pop, VVhiz and Bang Clowns. Wre can save the blocks for the climax. Sure, live blocks spelling out HURRAH, FOURTH OF JULY in a tricky alphabet song and dance. And what a finale, boss!-the tin soldiers in technicolor, with the whole cast singing 'Tramp- ing Feet in the Toyshop hleet' to the rhythm of 'The Beat of My Heartl' 'What was that? Oh, no! Wie can't have them until the fall. The whole cast is already signed up at Rondack for the summer. The Tirtbday Qi the Infamm THROUGI-I A DIRECTOR,S MEGAPHONE I Im I All right nowl Everyone on the set for the Birthday ofthe Infanta. Cameras! Lights! Well begin with the roving minstrels to give the spirit of 16th century Spain. The monkish costumes will be very effective. Now let's have that graceful opening minuet by the court attendants, slow and stately. The Infanta interrupts here, imperiously and petulantly. Cutl. Good work, Frances Richman. That's it, Fay Nlerson. You, the Duchess, rebuke her for actually wanting to play on her birthday, like other children. You tell her of a surprise. Good! She grows curious and demanding. Ah, 1 '-fi 52 she guesses it-a fantastic to amuse her on her birthday. Excellent work there, Frances! Your cue, Muriel VVolfsie. As chamberlain you greet the Infanta. Fine. Hold that dignified attitude. Now you lead in the fantastic. All right-the song and dance to amuse her. Remember, Audrey, you love the Infanta and would make her laugh! She throws you a rose before she leaves. Now, the big moment! The vain courtier, Helene, has uncovered the mirror. You, the ugly fantastic, see yourself. Register all the anguish of heartbroken little dwarf, as you die! Audrey, that's real acting! Now, lnfanta, all your hauteur in the curtain line. 'I-lenceforth, let those who come to play with me have no heart!' Congratulations, everybody! This production will pack the theatres. In spite of that svelte evening dress Cwhich made the Freshies gasp with wonder and awej she went right on punning- Snow again, grandma, I didn't get your drift! You can imagine the hilarious complications in dialogue as the two endeavor to understand each other. Class it as an A-1 short. It was a thoroughly old-fashioned evening, and that sophisticated Rondack audience just loved it! They were simply captivated by Little YVomen. YVatch Carol Lewis. She's the new Hepburn. Who can forget the sensational entrance of Nanny Chankin as Nlarmee? She had ' everything on that hat but Rondack's pine trees, and the remarkable gravity of her face simply increased the laughter. Nor must we forget to recommend Harriette Slote for more character parts. She made a perfect Hannah, with a brogue more Irish than a New York policeman. Claire De La Lzme A MUSICAL COMEDY Ladies and Gentlemen, you are about to witness a spectacular experiment! The Rondack Research Laboratories have just perfected an immense new lens, and so powerful is it that we hope to photograph a moving picture of the Moon! Be patient for a moment, folks, as the camera is now being focused on the rising Nloon. 54 Willy, this is strange. There is our own famous professor Eleanor Linder, author of 'Obey That l'mpulse,' leaving for the Moon. Who is that charming Claire de la Lune he's talking to? She looks amazingly like our own Claire Kulok of the Earth. Alia! They have very earthy problems, too, it seems. There's the image of Betty Mann telling Claire, 'Nly Darling Daughter, You Really Oughter' marry the rich Professor. Look! There are the milkmen of the Milky YVay. 'It's Great to Be a Nlilkman' evidently, for Claire seems to be in L' love with one, and are we 'lunyl too, or isn't he Edna Kadin? 'WVhy, they grow Petunias on the lVloon, too, the professor- hunting variety, it seems, for this most Florence Robbins- looking Petunia, is certainly making the professor run rings around the Moon. W'ell, we guess you never knew that lVIoon- beams were so pretty, or sang and danced so well, did you, or that stars gossiped so busily? Ah, there he is himself, The Man in the Moon, Claire's father Cdoesn't he remind you of Sonya Benjamin?j arriving at the crucial moment, just as Claire is about to marry the Professor . . . The de la Lunes are 'in the money' now, real Moonlight Nlillionaires, and as for the happy double-wedding, all's well that ends well on the Nloon, too! 'Red Riding Hood AN ANIMATED CARTOON Wlalt Dizzy has certainly outdone himself in this newest of his animated color cartoons, 4'Little Red Riding Hood. YVe understand that the dainty little White-robed fairies who opened the story were posed for by Selene, Gloria, Claire, Dorothy, and Betty. Little Red Riding Hood herself seemed to walk right out of the story-book. By the way, we understand that Rochelle lVIeisel was NValt's in- spiration for this character. The lrVoodcutters' Chorus which followed was a beautiful bit of synchronization and color photo- graphy. The voice of the Big Bad VVolf did sound like Annette Kaufman's, but that Wolf seemed much too real to be just a little camper. As for the music-the Wfoodcutters' Chorus, the Fairies' Song, the Wolf's Song-well, we are still humming theml Yes, Red Riding Hood is undoubtedly the latest and best of VValt Dizzy's cartoons. We mustn't forget to mention the stage show, Dreams For Sale, which ac- companied the cartoon. The Freshie Symphony was there, too, with a bang!-and the Freshie actors were thoroughly charming. After you see this grand musical number you,ll want to buy all your dreams from Bunks 9 and lO. l 5 5 The Senior Jiifinmfel Show lXfIr. Interlocutor Landesman-Good evening, everybody. Here it rests upon the popular Jean, trying to dance with six boys at once-or perhaps it's the other way round. There is Natalie, dancing blissfully with some tall dark Romeo from Schroon Lake Camp. Now it focuses upon Mr. Chankin serving punch to the thirsty crowd, which is endangering the stability of the punch table. The light plays aimlessly about, then strays to Cayuga where it reveals Betty's blushes as she is being serenadedg to Schroon Lake Camp and a thrilling performance of The Last lVIile. The beam wanders again this time to Brant Lake's refreshment corner where a gay crowd is gathered. Ah! Here we are at the Social Hall of YVakonda, with the spotlight illuminating their sparkling version of Senorita.,' There are Frankie and Shirley giggling again at Pine Tree. Thatls Nlabel dancing in a waltzy contest and Helen dividing them into a multi- plication dance. The spot is wavering.
