Senior Boys' Graduation Service ' Taking as their name Akikta, mean- mg One who- works with determination, the graduating class of the 'Senior Boys' Camp held an impressive indoor service on the closing Sunday of the 1952 season. Each class member wore on his coat the class flower, the white rose. Quietly they came into the packed as- sembly hall as the camp orchestra played the stirring Come Thou, Almighty King. The Call to Worship was given by Glenn Patton, the Scripture lesson was read by Michael Bishop, and the prayer was made by Wayne Fleck. Pastor Francis Reinberger, newly-elected to the faculty of the Gettysburg Seminary, had been chosen by the boys as their speaker. He spoke movingly of experiences which both he and the class members had had at Nawakwa and urged them to make use of their Nawakwa training. The service was concluded, after the presentation of diplomas and the class gift, by the sing- ing of the class hymn, A Mighty For- tress Is Our God. u To Strive, to Seek, to Find, and Not to Yield was chosen as the class motto. Their colors were red and white, and Pastor Ralph Sloop of New Cumberland, long a counselor at Nawakwa, was the class mentor. The class giftwas to be used to buy a new Hag for the camp, with the remainder of the money going to the swimming pool fund. W An Observer Looks at Nawakwa Camp N awakwa made quite an impres- sion on me as an observer. To single out specihc things which I liked is very dith- cult, for I enjoyed each daily experience from start to finish. The quiet moments during Morning Watch areinow mem- orable experiences-soul-refreshing at the beginning of each day. I liked the strict observance of quiet at hillside and the inspiring scenery at Upper Temple. The originality displayed by the. camp- ers on stunt night and on other nights which called for camper talent simply floored me Camazed me, I meanJ. An- other thing that impressed me was the camp spirit and cooperation which were so evi'dent among faculty and campers alike. The camp management is excellent from the director down to Garman with her little store requiring so much effort. But really, Nawakwa is a swell camp! I had the most wonderful time of my life! The Rev. Edwin VVisser

C amp N awakwa p12 Senior Girls Graduation VV e have 'come through many. good times at Nawakwa together, but this was it. Yes, this was the year 37 CHITIDCTS would proudly receive their diplomas at the final senior girls' hillsi'de service. It seemed that only too soon it was 7:00 p.m. on August 17, 1952, and a group of young women, all dressed in white, were seated at Upper Temple. They made. a pretty picture sitting there decorated with a cross shaped corsage formed out ot laurel leaves, a red rose, and white rib- bon. This was the peak of their fourfold life at Nawakwa and they all, showed a little excitement and sentimentzthat -would be expected of senior girls. Indeed, grad- uation was a happy event, as it marked four years successfully completed at campj but it was also sad because these girls- would never again be together as senior- campers. The class had chosen for their name XVichaka, which in the Sioux language means loyal, They had adopted the. cross for their symbol and had selected for their song The Old Rugged Cross and for thei'r poem The Cross Was His Own. Their class motto was What We are to be, we are becoming, their class colors were red and .white, and their flower was the red rose. For their mentor the girls had elected Mrs. R. W. Deitz, who proved very competent ,in guiding the class organization. , ? The hillside service began with the various class officers and mentor per- forming parts of the service. Pastor R. W, Deitz spoke to the ,girls concerning their problem of managing change. He .defined change to them as the possibility of be- coming more than they are now with the reminder that only the spirit of God Working in their mind can make this change. The graduates were presented with diplomas. Taps sounded and, as the sun set over the mountain, 37 young Women,,iilled with the spirit of Nawakwa left the hillside to be on their way as Christian leaders in the world of tomor- row., .... ,W ........... .... ..... ..... . . . . I am not joking when I say that this summer we had an unusually large and unusually fine group of observers at Camp Nawakwa. Besides those sent on synodical scholarships, we also had three missionaries of the ULCA and three visitors from foreign countries. Come to Nawakwa and make new friends would certainly be a truthful ad- vertisement of the camp.
