Camp N afwakwo 1 - Watch the birdie! In-tema-t'iona.Z confab. Cook-outs. i. V I 1 II Senior Girls' Camp Have you ever made a memory-quilt? Let's work on one, dividing it into quar- ters representing N awakwa's'fourfold life. e ,We begin with a piece of gold and white for Morning Watch with the sun spread- ing beauty through the pines. A patch of forest green will remi'nd us of Fellow- ship night at Council Circle. Thattcross- shaped scrap of red and white can stand for the graduating class, Wichaka, of which Mrs. Deitz was mentor 5 Nawakwa gained 37 alumnae that night. Use these odds iandlends to fill in spaces: candle yellow for indoor hillsides, purple-grey for the mountains opposite Upper Temple. This second part should begin with that bit of blue for the indoor games inflicted upon us by the rain. Here isa piece of icy blue 'that -could signify swimming classes, or the swimming meet at which Barb Benson set a camp record of 28.6 seconds in the backcrawl dash. In an ob- scure corner, .hide the black of deepest mourning for the campers' humiliation by Faculty in the annual softball, game. Six to live- is the score Faculty gives - lmagine, stopping the clock until that sixth run limped in! ' .To start the quilt's third quarter: blue with white polka-dots resembles Hash- lights in cabi'ns after Taps. Wlio can cram for tests in study,-hall anyhow? Any bit of faded calico can fit there as a reminder of the sun beating down on outdoor classes. 011 the 'fsocial' square, sew your head- band, be it green, blue, red, brown, or Olfangfi, HS' a memory of your tribe. Now Ulghts doings: use royal purple for those

C amp N awakwa p12 Senior Girls Graduation VV e have 'come through many. good times at Nawakwa together, but this was it. Yes, this was the year 37 CHITIDCTS would proudly receive their diplomas at the final senior girls' hillsi'de service. It seemed that only too soon it was 7:00 p.m. on August 17, 1952, and a group of young women, all dressed in white, were seated at Upper Temple. They made. a pretty picture sitting there decorated with a cross shaped corsage formed out ot laurel leaves, a red rose, and white rib- bon. This was the peak of their fourfold life at Nawakwa and they all, showed a little excitement and sentimentzthat -would be expected of senior girls. Indeed, grad- uation was a happy event, as it marked four years successfully completed at campj but it was also sad because these girls- would never again be together as senior- campers. The class had chosen for their name XVichaka, which in the Sioux language means loyal, They had adopted the. cross for their symbol and had selected for their song The Old Rugged Cross and for thei'r poem The Cross Was His Own. Their class motto was What We are to be, we are becoming, their class colors were red and .white, and their flower was the red rose. For their mentor the girls had elected Mrs. R. W. Deitz, who proved very competent ,in guiding the class organization. , ? The hillside service began with the various class officers and mentor per- forming parts of the service. Pastor R. W, Deitz spoke to the ,girls concerning their problem of managing change. He .defined change to them as the possibility of be- coming more than they are now with the reminder that only the spirit of God Working in their mind can make this change. The graduates were presented with diplomas. Taps sounded and, as the sun set over the mountain, 37 young Women,,iilled with the spirit of Nawakwa left the hillside to be on their way as Christian leaders in the world of tomor- row., .... ,W ........... .... ..... ..... . . . .
