FANTRY DIVISION W The Brigade was organized August 11th 1917, in Syracuse, N.Y., then called the Syracuse Brigade. The Ninth Infantry Regiment, Twenty-third Infantry Regiment, and 5th Machine Gun Battalion were attached units of the Brigade. The Brigade arrived in France between 20 September and 6 October 1917. During October 1917, the Brigade was assembled in the Bourmont area. In January 1918 a period of intensified training began. On May 20, troops moved by train for two days to an area North or Paris. In March, the Brigade headquarters was established at Troyun. the first engagement with the enemy occurred on the night 0! 1: hu? 19 March. It was a victory for the Nnertcans as our men nut uni; druve the enemy off, but captured more and Killed a larger number nLan ihtj lost. During the period of June thru July, the Brigade remained w'ahih the Chateau-Thierry sector, and the troops were under eoutxmuhqg h;;s:1ury and machine gun fire. 0n duty 18, the Brigade attacked and drove the enemy Irom Beaurpuire, Vaucastille; captured the town of Viergy and established a line in advance of the town which they held until relieved by a Frencthivision on the night of July 19 and 20. ,In early September the Brigade began movement as part of the St. Mihiel Offensive. In preparing for the Muese-Argonne Offensive, the Brigade moved to the vicinity of the Saippes River, Toul, and Chalons area. On the morning of October 3, the Brigade as part of the French 4th Army attacked Somme-Py and captured Blane Mont Ridge. Through the Remainder of October to the middle of November the Brigade continued to attack and reached the West bank of the Muese r1Ver. On November 17, the 3d Brigade joined in the Rhine movement and later occupied the Cobleanridgehead. At the end of hostilities, the Brigade moved to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and was deectivated 9 October 1939.
