Mr, Krout, head men or of the Camp Hill dribblers. began his fourth year of coaching the local Lions. XX'ith only three lettermen returning from the previous season. Coach Krout was given the task of building a team around them. To get ahead of our story, the results speak for themselves. The titanic success of the dribbling Lions was based on teamwork. The Camp Hill Lions certainly ran true to the old adage- As long as a banana sticks with the bunch. everything goes right: but as soon as it leaves the bunch. it gets skinned, Certainly this was the theory that Mr. Krout kept hammering home to his team. Of the three returning lcttermen. there were the two co-captains. Pete Wfhite and Lefty Thompson. and the veteran, Gordon Wanbaughg but with such promis- ing performers as Ron Sutton. Bruce Storms, Ben Shoeman, Bob Gross, jerry Bennett, Milky NX'ay and Don Becker having gained promotion from an excellent j. V. team of 1950-51, the team set their minds to that which lay ahead. After several practice and tune-up games with such teams as XVilliam Penn and Mechanicsburg. the Lions. having as their opposition. the team from Lower Sus- quehanna Township, played their first league game on December 14, 1951. As the Lions. with their starting five. composed of Co-Captains Pete Wliite and Lefty Thompson. teamed with Bruce Storms, Hen Shoeman. and Ron Sutton. took to the hardwood, they began a fight for the Lower Susquehanna League title, which was a nip and tuck affair. until the end of the season, three months away. W'ith Susquehanna as a worthy opponent. the Lions made their debut with a 55-28 victory. Camp Hills offense was built around Bruce Storms, 6' 4 center. and Larry Thompson. guardi however. it is interesting to note that eleven boys figured in the scoring. Wlith Leo Sevastio pacing his Hummelstown Bull- dogs with twelve points. the boys from Hershey way handed the snow-shoveling' Lions their nrst setback of the campaign. This reversal was a major factor in tlCfC1'111'I11l'lKLf the final outcome of the leagues standing. The Hummelstown game was played on December 18. the day of a heavy snowfall. The Bulldogs. taking a hint from the wea her. froae the ball for the last two minutes of the game. Larry Thompson, with thirteen points from the field. was high-scorer for the lost cause. The final score was 55-52. with Camp Hill on the short end. After the Christmas Holidays, the Hmistle-toed Lions took revenge for their tirst defeat. by trouncing Lower Paxton. W'ith Petei' XY'hite and Ben Shoeman, with a combination of twenty-two points, leading the attack. the local boys were never behind after jumping to a 13-5 lead in the first period. Once again, Camp Hill's strong bench with eleven of the varsity members scoring entered into the victory. The game ended with the Camp Hill folks happily going home with a 68-41 victory over Lower Paxton, and looking like a strong contender for the league crown. The Lions in this game looked far more impressive as league contenders, than they did in their earlier games. The Lions, with an impressive win over the Lemoyne Trojans. registered their second straight win on janu- ary 8, on the home court. W'ith fast breaking, and ac- curate shooting. Camp Hill's dribblers penetrated the Trojan defense. Bruce Storms. Lions' center. adroitly handled the rebounds, and when the 6' 4 lad wasn't rebounding. he ripped the nets for a neat, fifteen points. Once again, as in the two games previously, eleven Kroutmen swished the cords. The Hnal score was Camp Hill Lions, 623 Lemoyne Trojans, 24. Now the big game-Middletown! L'p to january 11, Camp Hill had lost one game and Middlett'iw'n's Raiders were undefeated. On that evening, lyiiddletown tasted defeat at the hands of the Lions. A determined Camp Hill team took the floor at approximately eight o'clock, and two hours later. the well-balanced, teamworking team of Mr. Krout brought home the baconf' The Lions stormed into Middletown and Bruce Storms with a cool eighteen points stormed the Raiders. Larry Thompson was Clamp Hills other big gun. canning thirteen points. Both Storms and Thompson hit con- sistently with iump-shots from the keyhole. Right be- hind these two. was Petei' NX'hite. the Lions' playmaker. who. when he wasn't busy setting up plays. found the cords for eleven markers. The final score was Camp Hill. 56g Middletown, 50. The Lions experienced little difficulty in over-powering the Enola Panthers by a convincing score of 62-38. The Panthers employed the deep-freeze tactics, but this time the Lions had on their long underwear and the freeze didn't chill the Lions. Once again, Camp Hill's pivot operators. Lefty Thompson and Bruce Storms, with fourteen and ten points respectively, led the victors. As the Lions added another victory to their belt. they also solidified their hold on top spot of the Lower Susque- hanna Conference title. As on previous occasions. the powerful reserves chipped in on the scoring. A total of sixty-two points was divided among eleven of the varsity team, this indicated a strong bench to be a major factor in determining the outcome of a game. For three years. the Lions had lost to the New Cum- berland Tigers on the latter's home court, but the l.ions, urged on by their immortal Derby. were de- termined to bring about a change. As the final seconds ticked off on the score clock and the final buzzer sounded. the Lions had chalked up their sixth victory in seven loop encounters. Witli Ben Shoeman. sopho- more forward, and Pete XX'hite. the other smooth- working forward. leading the attack with twenty-nine points between them. the Lions added to their laurels onte again. with an impressive 5'-So win over the highly regarded New Cumberland Tigers. XX ith four of the starting five of the Camp Hill Lions hitting for double figures. the Lions once again held that Tiger. This time. the Tiger was that of Highspire, lumping to a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. the Lions maintained a consistent lead, which produced the final score of 66-49. In a nip and tuck battle with the Swatara Eagles. the Lions. with the aid of Ron'i Sutton, clipped the wings of the Eagles. by the score of 48-Ffa game which the team of 1931-52 will always remember, With approximately four seconds remaining on the SCUIY- board clock. Gordon XY anbaugh was awarded a charity toss. Gordon missed the try. but under the basket. was Ron Sutton: and with the touch of fate in his fingers. he tapped the ball into the basket. as the buzzer sounded. ending the game with a 48-4' victory for the Lions. Ron paced the attack with six field goals, five fouls. for a total of seventeen points. but of those seventeen points. the last two will be remembered. Having played each team in the Lower Susquehanna Conference once. the Lions began their second round of the schedule on February 1. Their host opponent was a much-improved, hustling Susquehanna quintet. Larry Thompson's set shot from the right corner. in the last four seconds of an over-time period, gave the Lions a hard-earned victory. 41-39. Previously, with only a few seconds remaining in the regulation fourth quarter, the lndians of Susquehanna were holding a slim lead of 53-51. over the Lions, At this time. Lefty Thompson was awarded a pair of tosses from the free-throw line. Lefty converted both fouls, thus sending the game into overtime. Ben Shoeman once again came through when the chips were down and connected for eleven points. Behind him. were Thompson and Sutton, each with eight points, Riding on an eight-game. winning streak. the Lions traveled across the river to Hummelstown. the only team to date to defeat the Camp Hillites. This game. like the one at Susquehanna. also proved to be a thriller. lt once again took the Wt'st Shore Lions an overtime to reach victoryg and once again. lightning struck twice. lt was Larry Thompson's set shot from the side. which stowed away the game for the Lions. Pete Wliite and Larry Thompson were runner-up scorers. as Camp Hill's able center, Bruce Storms. ripped the cords for eleven points. The Lions maintained their winning way. with a 59-45 victory over the Lower Paxton Rangers. Witli three of the Lions hitting for double figures and com- piling an impressive 25-10 first quarter. the game was in the bag. Bruce Storms collected eighteen of the Lions' fifty-nine points, to take top-scoring honors of the game. It was eleven straight wins for the Lions. as they defeated Lemoyne for the second time on the latter's tloor, Led hy l.arr't' Thompton, Camp llill guard, who lotated the magic circle for nine Yield goals, and six fouls, for twenty-four points, the Lions took the measure of the Troians, 63-ll. lixcellent playmaking hy Pete XX'hr1e and Denton Kaltrider also enahled the Lions to gain the victory.
