N- f Y lil., l 5' 1,fLfVflD ' USS CAM DER-251 14 7afmmd '7n 2 ln T967 and i968 the United States was engaged in military operations to assist the South Vietnamese people in their struggle against North Vietnam. The U.S, Seventh Fleet was an instrument of this foreign policy and was responsible for conducting all phases of naval warfare. V' This command was deployed as a unit of the Seventh Fleet from 6 July l967 through 26 February H l968, ,and on an alternate basis, was assigned duties as SOFA CADMIND Hong Kong, Taiwan Patrol, and Market Time Operations off the coast of South Vietnam. Approximately.7O percent of our deployment was engaged in Market Time Operations. The efforts and sacrifices exerted by this magnificent crew to overcome adver- sities and accomplish all assignments in an outstanding manner were beyond compar- ison. lgnoring the obvious racial, creed, religious, educational and cultural dis- parities, the crew matured, united and developed into a naval unit without peer. Just as important was the moral support so generously provided by the home front. Therefore, this book is dedicatedto the officers and men of this command and their wives, children, parents, relatives and friends who meant so much to each of us. . This, then, is our story of the manner in which we lived during the deployment . . . Commander P. D. Butcher Commanding Officer
