Our mission was to inspect all unidentified or suspicious vessels within our patrol area. This northern coastline proved far more active than the peaceful southern shores we had become accustomed to while on patrol in previous WEST PAC tours. Day and night we watched artillery fire and air strikes on the beach as the Army and Air Force pounded the tenacious Viet Cong. Frequently, while on patrol, the CAMP provided fuel and fresh water for PCF's operating in the area. On 7 August, we were notified that the Viet Cong were overruning the Vietnamese Naval Junk Base lo on the Song .Tra Khuc River. At flank speed CAMP sped to the aid of the Vietnamese and an American Advisor. CAMP was directed to assume the duties of Operational Scene Commander and pro- vide gunfire support as required. Arriving on the scene within an hour, CAMP was unable to fire as spotters were not available and targets unidentified. As it was tac- ically infeasible to support a counter- offensive, CAMP directedPCF'S to enter the river and evacuate wounded personnel. For the next three nights, CAMP provided star shell illumination to the base as it braced itself against further attack until its defenders had adequately rebuilt their de- fenses. -, ' -vt,-.'.,.-ff... mu - Ha.--1 wagner-fe.: '. A PCF made our starboard side, her decks crowded with wounded Vietnamese. Immediately we sprang into action assisting the wounded refugees with medical care, food, and shelter. The scene was not pleasant, nonetheless, CAMP personnel worked hard to bring comfort to those indis- tress. As one PCF patrol boat raced to the ship, a Vietnamese woman gave birth to a child. CAMP treated fifteen wounded Vietnamese including a U. S. Naval Advisor and a tiny Viet- namese baby. CAMP called U. S. Army medical helicopters to the scene for the evacuation of all wounded. Controlling the helos which hovered over the fantail hoisting aboard the iniured was a delicate operation. The precise timing and seamanship displayed by each man hastened the life- saving evacuation of the wounded to the U. S. Army hospital in Quang Ngai. ln addition to the evacuated .patients,, CAMP dir- ected PCF'S to take twenty-five other evacuees to Chu Lai for safety. ...L - MEIJIVAC , .'... . .-1,--f:,'.:.: pa: +---- ,ff-y ,-11-.1211-'nf' : H ef A 21 -: , '.'1...-- '-i- .. ff: -I:,w1.
