The U.S, Seventh Fleet was an instrument of this foreign policy and was responsible for conducting all phases of naval warfare. V' This command was deployed as a unit of the Seventh Fleet from 6 July l967 through 26 February H l968, ,and on an alternate basis, was assigned duties as SOFA CADMIND Hong Kong, Taiwan Patrol, and Market Time Operations off the coast of South Vietnam. Approximately.7O percent of our deployment was engaged in Market Time Operations. The efforts and sacrifices exerted by this magnificent crew to overcome adver- sities and accomplish all assignments in an outstanding manner were beyond compar- ison. lgnoring the obvious racial, creed, religious, educational and cultural dis- parities, the crew matured, united and developed into a naval unit without peer. Just as important was the moral support so generously provided by the home front. Therefore, this book is dedicatedto the officers and men of this command and their wives, children, parents, relatives and friends who meant so much to each of us. . This, then, is our story of the manner in which we lived during the deployment . . . Commander P. D. Our mission was to inspect all unidentified or suspicious vessels within our patrol area. This northern coastline proved far more active than the peaceful southern shores we had become accustomed to while on patrol in previous WEST PAC tours. Day and night we watched artillery fire and air strikes on the beach as the Army and Air Force pounded the tenacious Viet Cong. Frequently, while on patrol, the CAMP provided fuel and fresh water for PCF's operating in the area. On 7 August, we were notified that the Viet Cong were overruning the Vietnamese Naval Junk Base lo on the Song .Tra Khuc River. At flank speed CAMP sped to the aid of the Vietnamese and an American Advisor. CAMP was directed to assume the duties of Operational Scene Commander and pro- vide gunfire support as required. Arriving on the scene within an hour, CAMP was unable to fire as spotters were not available and targets unidentified. As it was tac- ically infeasible to support a counter- offensive, CAMP directedPCF'S to enter the river and evacuate wounded personnel. For the next three nights, CAMP provided star shell illumination to the base as it braced itself against further attack until its defenders had adequately rebuilt their de- fenses. -, ' -vt,-.'.,.-ff... mu - Ha.--1 wagner-fe.: '. A PCF made our starboard side, her decks crowded with wounded Vietnamese. Immediately we sprang into action assisting the wounded refugees with medical care, food, and shelter. The scene was not pleasant, nonetheless, CAMP personnel worked hard to bring comfort to those indis- tress. As one PCF patrol boat raced to the ship, a Vietnamese woman gave birth to a child. CAMP treated fifteen wounded Vietnamese including a U. S. Naval Advisor and a tiny Viet- namese baby. CAMP called U. S. Army medical helicopters to the scene for the evacuation of all wounded. Controlling the helos which hovered over the fantail hoisting aboard the iniured was a delicate operation. The precise timing and seamanship displayed by each man hastened the life- saving evacuation of the wounded to the U. S. Army hospital in Quang Ngai. ln addition to the evacuated .patients,, CAMP dir- ected PCF'S to take twenty-five other evacuees to Chu Lai for safety. ...L - MEIJIVAC , .'... . .-1,--f:,'.:.: pa: +---- ,ff-y ,-11-.1211-'nf' : H ef A 21 -: , '.'1...-- '-i- .. ff: -I:,w1. Our task was administrative control over and respon- sibility for all U. S. Naval ships in the harbor. CIC and Radio Central, on port and starboard watches, worked long shifts to keep up with the administrative work load. The Bridge Gang was kept busy with 'round the clock visual signal watches, and the ship provided permanent Shore Patrol. However, our fourteen day visit was not all work. There was time for more enioyable activities such as sightseeing and bargain shopping, especially with Hong Kong's plentiful tailor shops and camera stores. As a tax free international seaport, Hong Kongisfamed as the shopping capital of the Orient, and CAMP sailors took full advantage ofthe reduced prices. Also, famous for its night life, Hong Kong presented itself the perfect spot for the Ship's Party, a two night affair attended by nearly every member of the crew. Equal ly attractive was Kowloon, across the bay on the China mainland, well known for its fabulous hotels, restaurants and lively British discoteques. As a fine tribute to the capable and mature conduct displayed by the CAMP crew ashore in Hong Kong, the ship was presented with the Serviceman's Guide Meri- torious Conduct Ashore Award for the month of September, l967. ,f-.,.f,g54y ,,,.,v,-f,:L.f.3:,' .N Q L, ff. After set- ting up our patrol barrier in the formidable Formosa Straits-, the CAMP found it necessary to head north at flank speed to avoid the invading Typhoon Carla. Running into 40 foot seas and 70 knot winds which remained unabated for several days, the CAMP suffered total destruction off the for- ward gun shield and loss of the fire control radar system. Subsequent high seas washed the remnants of the gun shield over the side and reduced the remainder of Mount 31 to mere junk. On the north coast of Taiwan, the CAMP visited the city of Keelung, port of entry for the capital, Taipei.
