Wichita 1965 Cameron State Agricultural College Lawton, Oklahoma i Foreword On May 20, 1908, the Oklahoma Legislature established six schools of agriculture. Cameron State School of Agriculture was one of these six. Total enrollment was 108, and the faculty consisted of six members; classes were held in the basement of a downtown business building. In 1964-65 some 2,000 students at¬ tend Cameron’s day and night classes. Its faculty and staff now number ap¬ proximately 90. In the past year the physical structures on the campus have doubled, and the enrollment has in¬ creased 25% during this period. This tremendous growth and ac¬ complishment has taken place only through the concentrated efforts of many people, and Cameron’s students are forever in their debt. It is in their honor that these pages are created . . . and our hope is that progress may con¬ tinue through the Wichita. May those who turn these pages help in the up¬ ward climb. I Cameron’s Former Student Association elected 1964-65 officers at its annual banquet dur¬ ing the homecoming weekend. Mrs. Norma Baker (left) retiring Cameron Former Student Associa¬ tion President, stands beside new board member, Bryan Waid and new secretary, Mary Louise Wol- verton. Modernistic designs of the new two-story brick administration-li¬ brary building contains the library on the sec¬ ond floor and business offices, President Richard Burch’s offices and offices for the col¬ lege deans on the first floor. Below, students take advantage of the library’s facilities to pre¬ pare for their classes. 4 The Governor Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education are from top: John Vater, Jr., chair¬ man; Guy Harris, vice-chairman; Mrs. Jewell Ditmars, secretary; William Payne, assistant secretary; Dr. T. E. Dunlap, chancellor; T. G. Sexton, administrative assistant; Bob Allee, R. L. Crowder, G. Ellis Gable, Donald Kennedy, and Wharton Mathies. of Oklahoma is the honorable Henry Bellmon. The Board of Regents for Oklahoma A and M colleges are top row: W. R. Williams, chairman; Robert Hartley, vice-chairman; Amos Bass, secretary; Forest Mclntire, administrative as¬ sistant; Burke Healey. Bottom row: H. C. Hitch, David Howe, O. L. Lackey, Earl Russell, and Lew Meibergen. is the president of Cameron College. His assump¬ tion of leadership is the culmination of a long and successful career as an administrator. He has been the guiding light of Cameron College for the past five years. For proof of this we need only look at the changes on campus since his arrival. President Burch (upper left) looks on as Mrs. Edna Jo Campbell, his secretary, types on some very important paper work. Dr. Richard B. Burch 6 M ss Cameron is Lynda Ann Martin, sophomore education major. She was selected Miss Cameron for the Miss Oklahoma” pageant in Tulsa in June; she was named in the college’s first annual pageant, Saturday, May 9, in the Cameron auditorium. Miss Martin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Martin of Lawton, scored above nine other contestants for the honor. She was presented a trophy by Dr. Rich¬ ard Burch, president of Cameron College. Cafeteria is new on our college campus. The cafeteria which ad¬ joins the Clarence Davis Memorial Student Union features the newest in equipment (lower left). It will seat 350 persons and also has facilities of two private dining rooms. Meals are served in the cafeteria three times a day and on weekends. 8 Relaxation and refreshments are available at the Clarence Davis Memorial Stu¬ dent Union, shown above. You can play a game of pool (right); visit the bookstore where you find many school supplies (lower right) or meet and have a coke with your friends. The ballroom and lounge are open for students who wish to study. 9 i Dorms for students on Cameron’s campus are numerous. This year a new three-story boy’s dormitory, Dorm A (left) adds a new dimension to the growing campus. Other dormitories shown are North Hall (middle left), men’s dormitory; Cameron Hall (lower left), women’s dormitory; South Hall (right), men’s dormitory; and West Hall (bottom), men’s dormitory. Religion is important in college life and Cameron has three reli¬ gious buildings to help serve this purpose. The Baptist Student Union (upper left), The Methodist Wesley Foundation Center (upper right), and The Church of Christ Bible Chair (lower). Devotions and social gatherings are held by each one for all stu¬ dents who wish to participate. Students choose the courses that are benefi¬ cial and interesting to them. They vary from the home economics department (left) which reflects the modern facilities to the chemistry lab (middle left) which has the best equip¬ ment available. Cameron displays a lot of talent on the football field during fall season. While training, the Cameron Aggies with the three coaches, Bear Jen¬ sen, Layoid Woodson, and Lee Horne, work hard to produce an outstanding football team. Their results have pleased many loyal fans and students. The team is the top-rated team in the na¬ tion’s junior colleges. Baseball comes in early spring as an¬ other one of Cameron’s favorite outdoor sports. The boys on the base¬ ball team put in many long hours of practice from learning to throw good balls to making those successful home runs. Coach Charles Angeletti produces a fine baseball team for Cameron College. 12 Physical sciences has been adapted from the former ad¬ ministration building. The brick three- story structure features many classrooms and office space for faculty members. Every day many students come through the glass front doors to go to the union for a break or to go to another class session. A classroom building in Cameron’s curriculum are now offered in the very mod¬ ern and well-equipped physi¬ cal science building. The building contains classrooms, laboratories and offices for eight faculty members. This is another one of Cameron’s new aspects of college growth. The gym features many activities which in¬ terest the college student. Here in Cameron’s field house home basketball games are played, pep as¬ semblies are formed, many intramural basketball games take place, and sev¬ eral of the girls’ physical education classes are taught. 13 Classes and laboratories are seen in the Cameron dairy barn (upper left), Jed Johnson Hall, (upper right), and the biological science building (lower right). The barn contains Grade A dairy and milk processing equipment. Jed Johnson Hall houses classrooms for the electronics and journalism de¬ partments. Students attend one of the dances held in the student union ballroom. Such activities are sponsored throughout the year by vari¬ ous clubs centered on campus. Plays, lectures, recitals, and guest entertainers, along with bonfires and ball-games help to round out Cameron’s extracurricular activities. r cSiiiaSp f. . 1 git- ul If mS In. . jf v 41 f m Cameron’s military program is the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). This program is designed to give the stu¬ dent training for further military service. Every male student on campus must participate in this program of a class period twice weekly and drill every Tues¬ day afternoon. Standing in attention is the ROTC Color Guard (shown above). Below the Keathley Rifles are practicing one of their outstanding per¬ formances. 15 Dianne Freeman, 1964-65 homecoming queen, is escorted off the football field by E. H. Barman, student body president. Miss Freeman was crowned by Barman during half-time of the Aggie homecoming game with Northeastern A and M. She was chosen by the student body over other queen candidates. Typical of Homecoming is the Dorm A float pictured here which stressed Great Headlines. 16 Table of Contents Faculty Sophomores Freshmen Personalities Organizations Sports Activities 17 GORDON L. Keeping with this tradition the 1964-65 edition of this crack drill team has carried the banner to the sunny shores of California. The Jun¬ ior Rose Bowl crew expanded their fame by performing in the Junior College edition of the Rose Parade and during the half time of the Junior Rose Bowl. This performance featured the entire group with a special fea¬ ture by Bernard Lee and Ken Sullivan. This was an exciting experience for the KR’s but it is only one among many performances that they present throughout the duration of the year. Under Coach Bear Jensen the Aggies raced to 10 easy regular season victories, and received Cameron’s second ; invitation in four years to compete in the Junior Rose Bowl. Cameron actually opened its season without its top offensive star in the lineup. The Aggies defeated Dodge City, Kan., 25-7, but fullback Vernon Moore had nothing to do with it. Instead Don Burt, who later moved to guard, handled the heavy running I chores, and racked up 97 yards rushing against the out-manned Conquistadores. Moore was on hand the next week, when Cameron made its first appearance against j an Oklahoma opponent. The hard-running transfer from Oklahoma State led a 40-13 rout of the Tish Terrors, and gave Cameron a 2-0 record to take against McCook, Neb. —the team which knocked the Aggies out of the running for a JRB invite in 1963. The Aggies wasted no time aga inst the Nebraskans, rushing to a 27-0 first quarter lead and coasting to a 40-6 triumph. Trinidad, Colo., was next, and the Trojans , appeared to be on the road to stopping Cameron’s winning streak when they jumped to a 13-0 victory in the first five minutes. But Cameron came back quickly, and with Moore rushing for 227 yards, the Aggies won, 34-13. The rest of the regular season was easy. Inept Garden City, Kan., fell, 55-0, and Pratt bowed, 69-7. Arch-rival Northeastern was mangled 61-7, in the Aggie homecoming. New Mexico Military folded in the second half, 46-7, and Cisco, Tex., bowed, 51-27, in the regular-season. finale. The Records 25 Dodge City 7 40 Murray 13 40 McCook 6 34 Trinidad 13 55 Garden City 0 69 Pratt 7 61 Northeastern 7 46 NMMI 7 51 Cisco Junior Rose Bowl 27 6 Long Beach 28 the JRB Signing Coach Jensen Don Toyne President Burch Pete Runyon By midseason it was evident that Cameron was in line for an invitation to play in the Junior Rose Bowl. But the Aggies, who rushed through five opponents with almost no trouble—they outscored the five, 194-39—still had Pratt, Kan., and three powers remaining on the schedule. Northeastern, Cameron’s oldest and strongest rival, was first, followed by New Mexico Military Academy and Cisco, Tex. Only NMMI offered any strong opposition to the Aggies’ brutal ground attack, though, and that lasted just one half. Cameron rallied in the final 30 minutes to crush the Broncs, 46-7. Northeastern, a 14-12 winner over Cameron in 1963, didn’t last a quarter with the Aggies this time, bowing, 61-7. When Cisco went down, 51-27, in the season ender, it was assured that Cameron would get a shot at the Eastern berth in the JRB. The investigation of Cameron’s ability began on an unofficial note when Bill Leishman, a former JRB official, visited to view films of the Aggies in action. Don Toyne and Pete Runyon, two members of the ’64 committee, followed two weeks later to make the invitation official. Toyne, chairman of the Eastern School Selection committee, and Runyon, Game Chairman, were part of the group that selected Cameron from a group of four schools under considera¬ tion for the JRB berth. Dec. 12 was not Cameron’s day, at least, not in Pasadena, Calif. The Aggies’ first offensive play turned out to be the pattern for the entire afternoon as Cameron lost, 28-6, to Long Beach City College, in the Junior Rose Bowl. On that play end Bill Abbey eluded LBCC’s defen¬ sive secondary, only to have quarterback Tom Croft throw the ball far over his head. Cameron was forced to punt three plays later, LBCC drove in for its first touchdown, and the Aggies were behind the rest of the way. Cameron rushed for 318 yards against a Viking de¬ fense that was both rated tops in the country and stacked shoulder-to-shoulder after discovering that Cameron’s passing attack was no threat. But when the LBCC goal was threatened the Viking defense stiffened. Cameron’s longest drive of the day | carried 95 yards, from the Aggie three to the Viking ! two, but Cameron failed to score. The march was not in vain, however, as linebacker ; Phil Hays pounced on an LBCC fumble in the end j zone seconds later, scoring Cameron’s only touchdown of the game. Cameron’s inability in the airways was the result of . an injury to Croft in a scrimmage two days before the JRB. The sophomore quarterback, who completed 44 per cent of his passes during the year, re-injured his ribs in the scrimmage, and was unable to throw with his usual motion. He completed just one of 13 passes, and was generally ineffective against the Vikings. I Cameron had little to shout about in the Junior Rose Bowl game in Pasadena. Above, the Aggies demonstrate their feelings after line¬ backer Phil Hays recovered a third quarter Long Beach City College fumble in the end zone for Cameron’s only touchdown. At left is the final story, with only a few scattered fans around to view the game score on the gigantic Rose Bowl board—LBCC 28, Cameron 6. Cameron’s Dangerous Passing-Receiving Combination End Gary Guinn Quarterback Tom Croft 171 Halfback Glendol Garrett (with ball) breaks through a gaping hole to’show his heels to an enemy defense. Garrett ‘went 48 yards for a touchdown on this play, which is indicative of Cameron’s explosive offense. Linebacker Keith Lavender (top left) puts the finishing touches on a gang tackle by a strong Aggie defense that allowed more than two touchdowns only once during the regular season. I . . . basketball Tom Curd Tom Hopman Coach Dale Roark George Reveter Duane Kohlenberger 174 ( mm ¥ i B JH Bfc VB B « W 1 VI 1 Aggies Alter Attack, Shine As Go-Go-Goers Coach Dale Roark, unable to find a winning combination in two previous seasons as Cameron’s head basketball coach, turned from his disciplined ball-control attack for the first time this season. And for the first time the Aggies began to produce exciting, if inconsistent, results under the ex-OSU mentor’s tutelage. With the little men—Duane Kohlenberger, George Reveter, Ray Willis and Lonni Sanders—doing most of the scoring and a lot of the rebounding, Cameron came back from two opening losses in the Garden City Basketball Classic to guarantee Roark a winning season by the semester break. Reveter, the only Aggie to average a two-figure scoring aver¬ age for the season, was the key to the run-and-shoot offense. Not only did he score consistently, the sophomore transfer also set up dozens of easy buckets with brilliant passes. The Aggies compiled two extensive winning streaks during the regular season, and were in position to take a nine-game string into the regional tournament. But Murray ended that spree two weeks before the tourney opener, defeating the Aggies, 84- 69. 175 Koh lenberger, Aggies Win All-States Title Freshman guard Duane Kohlenberger sparked Cameron’s Aggies to the championship of the 11th Annual All-States Basketball Classic this season. Kohlenberger, the little freshman from Addison, Mich., averaged 15.5 points in the two-game tourney, to earn the top spot on ai All-Tournament team that also included Aggie floorleader George Reveter. Kohlenberger’s biggest contribution to Cameron’s tour¬ nament championship came in the first round, against Bacone. The Aggies entered the second half of the duel with a small, 35-33, lead. But Kohlenberger took over just after the rest stop to score 13 straight points, and send Cameron into a decisive 58-44 advantage. The Aggies went on to win easily, 84-73. Ray Willis and Reveter also scored in double figures against Bacone, with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Cameron polished off its ninth tournament triumph by upsetting Howard County, 73-66, in the finals. In that one Houston Thomas, Kohlenberger and Billy Savage teamed for 35 points to lead a well-balanced Aggie attack. Cameron trailed Howard County, 31-28, at halftime, and fell farther behind, 39-32, three minutes into the second half. From there it was all Cameron, though, as the Aggies outscored the Texans, 20-4, during a seven-minute streak, and took a 52-43 lead into the final 10 minutes. Howard County rallied twice in the closing moments, but was unable to get closer than four points. Kohlenberger and Reveter were joined on the All- Tournament team by Howard County’s Tom Carter and Eddy Nelson, and John O’Connell of Garden City. O’Connell sparked his Kansas club to third place in the tournament with a consolation victory over Bacone in a preliminary to the title contest. The victory in the All-State classic, which was made possible by a surprising balance in Coach Dale Roark’s clu b, proved to be indicative of things to come. Almost everyone on the club had a bright moment in the two- game holiday tournament, and everyone returned in later games to spark an Aggie rally. Duane Kohlenberger . most valuable player Aggies Rarely Made Same Mistake Twice Only two opponents, defending national Junior College champion Dodge City and defense-minded Murray, were able to defeat Cameron’s Aggies twice during the regular 1964-65 basketball season. Dodge City’s Conquistadors, top-ranked in juco circles again this season, stopped Cameron, 89-84, in a thrilling battle in the Aggie fieldhouse, then ripped Dale Roark’s charges, 86-71, at Dodge City. Murray won first at home, 63-59, over Cameron, then made it more decisive on the Aggie court with an 84-69 decision. Cameron’s near-upset of Dodge City was probably its best overall performance of the year. The Aggies started the game in a slow, ball-control offense, but began running with the fast¬ breaking Conqs in the second half. Down by 15 points when the race began, Cameron pulled to within two points in the closing minutes before running out of steam. The big guns in the Aggies’ fast-break attack were freshman guards Ray Willis and Lonnie Sanders, who scored 20 points each. Sanders came off the bench to spearhead the almost- successful second half assault. Two other Aggies, George Reveter and Houston Thomas, scored in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively. 177 Cameron’s rebounding aces also played other roles on the versatile Aggie basketball squad this season. In top picture Cameron’s Tom Curd (in white) joins four St. |] Gregory players in a scarmble for a loose ball. At left, big Tom Hopman goes in for an easy layup, and John Vas (30) follows close behind as the Aggies score on a fast break. The running attack was Cameron’s most dangerous offensive weapon this season, and prvided Coach Dale Roark with his first 100-point game. 178 Dodge City’s great Carl Head (upper left) leaps above Cameron’s Billy Savage to grab a rebound during 89-84 thriller at Cameron. Head, rated among the best junior college cagers in the country, scored 35 point to lead Dodge City to win at Cameron, and scored 23 more as Dodge City made it two in a row, 86-71, at home. At left, freshman guard Lonnie Sanders outruns Murray de¬ fenders to the goal for a field goal during torrid duel in Aggie Fieldhouse. Cameron also lost twice to Murray, 63-59 at Tishomingo, and 84-69, in this one. Denni Catcher- . . . baseball Riley McCaskill Outfielder Terry Pdrryman Pitcher-Inf i elder Mike leman First seman Aggies Enter Second Year Cameron entered its second sea¬ son in the baseball world this spring with a successful first year behind and a bright future ahead. Coach Charles Angeletti guided the 1964 Aggies to a 9-13 record against top junior and senior col¬ lege and Army competition. Eight veterans of the first season and ei • Oklahoma All-Staters were am . g the group which greeted Angeletti as the 1965 campaign opened. The Aggies scheduled 27 games for 1965, including contests with the most powerful junior colleges in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. Terry Perryman, Ron Frost, Mike Coleman, Dennis Trahan, Larry Massad, Riley McCaskill, Tommy Poling and Harry Sharp are all back for a second season. Aggie Baseball Begins Comeback Baseball has been an off-and-on sport at Cam¬ eron for many years. The game has been so lightly stressed on the Aggie campus that the one NJCAA baseball championship which Cam¬ eron won was taken by a group of Aggies which formed a team just prior to the regional tourna¬ ment. But it is no longer a minor sport with the Aggies, and Coach Charles Angeletti is heading into his second season with high hopes of a highly- successful campaign. Some of the reasons for his hopes are the re¬ turn of eight mainstays of the 1964 team, eight Oklahoma All-Staters and a host of talented freshman prospects. The Aggie season opened March 13, when Cameron met Central State in a doubleheader at ABC Park in Lawton, with the regional tourna¬ ment early in May the most important date on the schedule. The winner of that tournament will travel to Grand Junction, Colo., to compete in the NJCAA Championship Tournament later in the month. 18 ! . . . boys intramurals Intramural Football Championship Team The Nads, above, won Cameron’s boys intramural football championship. Physical education is required for almost every Cameron coed, and the girls physical education program offers instruction in a wide variety of courses, ranging from gymnastics to golf. Aggie girls are also invited to participate in an intramural program which offeres not only competition with other distaff members of the student body, but with girls from each of the other coeducational junior colleges in the state. Among the sports in which the girls can participate are riflery, tennis, golf, bowling, basketball, badminton, shuffleboard, table tennis, volleyball, softball, soccer, body mechanics, gymnastics and the Aggiette Drill Team. Cameron’s Intramural Club traveled to Eastern A M, at Wil- burton, early in 1965 to take part in a Basketball Playday, finishing second to the host school. Later the Aggiettes held a Playday of their own. The girls Intramural Club meets once each week in the Aggie Fieldhouse.
