Near Nature’s Wonderland Far above Cameron College and the surrounding area of Ft. Sill, Lawton and Comanche County is the huge colossas of granite called Mt. Scott. Sentinel of the picturesque Wichita mountains is this enduring mountain which was ancient when Columbus touched foot in the Western Hemisphere. Cameron College nestles at the foothills of this magic land of elk, buffalo, deer and antelope. Cougars and wild cats tread the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, unafraid. One of the great primitive parks preserved by the federal government, this wildlife refuge provides a beauty spot which is un¬ paralleled in the Great Plains. Students seeking the open life of the great West can find no spot more adequate to commune with nature, to fish, to snap photos of enduring nature than here, only 15 miles from the campus. Placid blue lakes, huge slabs of gray, red and purple granite, oak, elm and willow trees form a frame-work of natural beauty for picnics, fishing trips or just loafing in the sun.

Dedication In the annals of human endeavor, defense of a nation or a way of life has always been a noble design and requires the utmost of talent, courage and loyalty from the people of any nation. In 1951, Cameron college initiated the Reserve Officer Training Corps to fulfill a specific purpose, that of providing trained leaders in a national crisis. From a humble beginning Cameron ' s ROTC has grown so that now over 300 young men are trained annually for leadership in the United States Army. Through the years since its inception, the local unit has maintained such a high quality of instruction and training that the Cameron Reserve Officers Training Corps is generally recognized as a superior group in Oklahoma and the nation. ROTC Cadets have created a tradition of leadership and honor which envelopes all phases of the training program, proficiency in marching, classwork, military etiquette and riflery. Riflery has not been the least of Cameron ROTC successes. In 1961, the ROTC rifle team won the National Championship in the National Junior College Athletic Association postal match. It is inevitable that a superior organization such as this inspires in the young men it trains, a sense of leadership and confidence invaluable in later military service or civilian life. In line with this continuing process of tradition building, in November of 1962, the Cameron ROTC was officially installed in formal ceremony by President Richard B. Burch and Lt. Col. Elton W. Duren as the Keathley Rifles. This unit within the ROTC bears the name of S Sgt. George Dennis Keathley, a former Cameron student and Congressional Medal of Honor winner who died in Italy in World War II defending the United States. With the installation of the Keathley Rifles, another proud tradition is born at Cameron college and will be nurtured and developed along with all the other proud traditions of our institution, therefore it is with pride and gratitude that the staff of the 1963 Wichita dedicate this publication to the instructors, officers and men of the Cameron College Reserve Offi¬ cers Training Corps.
