I A State Supported School 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Students and prospective students at Cameron College, we offer you a growing school with a future as brilliant as the sunrise of our own Western Oklahoma. With accreditation by North Central Accrediting Association in 1962, with $1.6 million of new buildings getting underway on our campus, and with the alert, intelligent and forward-looking youth on our campus, the prospects for higher education are increasingly bright in Lawton and Western Oklahoma. As Cameron College strives to promote culture, higher academic standing and superior job opportunities for the youth of this portion of Oklahoma, more and more the college will depend upon support by the people of Lawton and the surrounding areas of Oklahoma. Our social activities, sports and intercollegiate participation in the areas of speech, music and science will continue to increase in quality as the size of the institution grows. With the new buildings which are going up this year, enroll¬ ment at Cameron will continue to expand with the growing community until in 1970, Cameron ' s student body may number approximately 5,000. A growing school with unlimited space for expansion, Cameron beckons to all those who envision an institution of learning which will prepare students for jobs in the modern world, give them a boost along the way in the search for higher degrees, and support them in the search for more worthy American Citi¬ zenship. Cameron State Agricultural College is the academic cen¬ ter of Lawton, Oklahoma, a rapidly-growing metropolis just south of the picturesque Wichita Mountains and ad¬ jacent to Ft. Still, the Artillery and Guided Missile Center of the United States. Founded May 20, 1908, this junior college is now the largest in Oklahoma. Rapid expansion of the cam¬ pus facilities for classrooms and laboratories is occurring under the administration of Dr. Richard Burch, president of Cameron College. Cameron College offers an array of courses, plus special training in technology, electronics and occupational education which round out a full curriculum preparing students for fur¬ ther college education. In the agricultural program, engineering mathematics, agronomy, soils, animal husbandry, livestock feeding, dairy cattle management, entomology and poultry are offered. Biological science courses consist of bacteriology, biology, botany, physiology, zoology, and vertebrate zoology. Business courses are accounting, mathematics, office ma¬ chines, communications, law, geography, salesmanship, ad¬ ministration, typewriting and shorthand. Other numerous courses are offered in engineering, mathe¬ matics, physics, mechanical technology, chemistry, shop, home economics, English, medical, dental, journalism, speech, French, German, Russian, Spanish, music, physical education, geology, religion, economics, history, psychology, sociology, engineering drawing, electricity, and military science. More hours are being spent in Cameron ' s Library than ever before ac¬ cording to research conducted by the librarian. Providing Preparation for Effective Living 3 Centrally located administration building serves as campus headquarters. Through Administration and Guidance Physics students observe the acceleration of a free-falling body. and Various Academic Departments Botany laboratory students produce drawings. Cameron is a two-year college whose many graduates have be¬ come community, state and national leaders in government, busi¬ ness, industry and the professions. An institution fully accredited by the North Central Accrediting Association and by the Oklahoma State Department of education. A faculty and student body whose prestige in community af¬ fairs and church activities is notable. With the emphasis on math and science in 1962, Cameron ' s labs are busy turning out effective students who are prepared to become mathematicians, engineers and scientists in the senior col¬ leges across the nation. Daily work in electronics, biology, physics, agronomy, and chemistry are laboratory courses which combine the most effec¬ tive teaching and learning. Chemistry majors conduct experi¬ ments. 5 and the Most Modern Facilities Many new teaching aids, which will make it easier for in¬ structors to communicate with students, and which will be of great assistance in the various departments are in use at Cameron now. In addition to a new Webcor Compact Deluxe Tape re¬ corder, there is a new Magnavox Automatic record player, and an outstanding collection of long play record albums, for use in all of the language arts department classes. The new overhead projectors include a Vu-Graph, a Master Vu-Graph, and a Thermo-Fax portable projector for use in the language arts, drafting technology and math departments. There are two new Underwood electric typewriters, an IBM electric typewriter, an Underwood manual typewriter with a math keyboard, along with an A. B. Dick Duplicator and a Newcomb Transcription record player with head phones, pri¬ marily for use in the business department. These are just a few of the modern instructional aids pur¬ chased yearly at the college. Cameron ' s military department, Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), is headed by Lt. Col. Elton W. Duren, assisted by Maj. Donald L. Means, Capt. Michael D. Macomber, Lt. Jim Barnes, M Sgt. David J. Schuler, S Sgt. Larry E. Howell and Sgt. Kermit D. Arthur. Objectives of the military department are to present to every student enrolled in ROTC a two-year course in military education designed to develop individual char¬ acter and self-discipline, strengthen the foundation of in¬ telligent citizenship, and give training in basic military subjects that will be of future benefit to those who will serve in the Armed Forces, also to motivate the ROTC stu¬ dent for future military service and to prepare the ROTC student for acceptance into the Advanced ROTC Program, with subsequent commissioning as an officer in the U.S. Army. A potential national championship rifle team is in the making here as an ROTC officer instructs freshmen in the fundamentals of riflefiring. Aggie riflemen claimed the trophy for national Junior College rifle teams in 1961. An Excellent Military Department Below is the 1962 edition of the close-order drill team which has been renamed the Keathley Rifles this year in honor of a Cameron graduate and Congression¬ al Medal of Honor winner, Sgt. George D. Keathley. The Keathley Rifles represent the valor and honor of American fighting men. They perform precision manual of arms and close-order drill with all the snap and polish of seasoned veterans. 7 Students find information quickly and easily in this modern, well-organized library. In 1962 alone, $14,000 was expended on books, binding, newspapers, magazine subscriptions and supplies for Cam¬ eron ' s library. On books, $12,946 was spent. This money was engaged in various areas, particularly in the economic, math and science classifications. The number of books re¬ ceived in this year totaled 2,468; 202 were gifts from faculty, clubs, and churches. This increased the circulation of books for students and faculty from 7,470 to 8,753 volumes. The library inventory now includes 13,428 volumes. One goal of the library is to catalogue a total of 20,000 books. Cameron ' s library has two full-time librarians, a circula¬ tion clerk and eleven student assistants. An Adequate Library Excellent library facilities are available for students to do research and study. 8 I Cameron Hall, women ' s dormitory Another aspect of growth on the campus at Cameron are the proposed expansion of Cameron Hall which will be redecorated and renovated to house 34 additional girls, the addition of a new boys ' dormitory which will accommodate 200 more boys. Gracious Living Quarters Are Provided South Hall, men ' s dormitory 1 I North Hall, men ' s dormitory West Hall, men ' s dormitory 9 A Aggies have always been champions on the gridiron. The 1962 edition claimed the mythical championship and proved it by defeating Bakersfield, California, in the Junior Bowl. Competitive sports are an important adjunct to a physical edu¬ cation program where President J. F. Kennedy ' s goal of physically fit Americans is met by a rigorous program of weightlifting, drill, basketball, softball, badminton, and various other sports. Physical education is required for all students who cannot claim a medically supported reason for not participating. - In basketball, the Cameron Aggies have always managed to remain close to the throneroom in the All States Jaycee Tourna¬ ment and the National Junior College Tournament. Many Juco All-Americans have worn the Black and Gold colors. Mute evi¬ dence of the effectiveness of the training and coaching athletes at Cameron College is a roll-call of great stars who con¬ tinue to show greatness in four-year institutions. Byron Beavers of Houston, Joe Don Looney of O. U., Jim Sellers of O. S. U., and Big Jim Barnes at Texas Western are just a few of the recent Aggies who are spreading the fame of Cameron far. Cameron Promotes Growth Through Sports 10 From the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena to the cold winter snows on the gridiron of Pratt, Kansas, the Aggiettes, a charm-packed group of coeds follow the football and basketball teams to take part in half-time festivities and to cheer the Aggies to victory. These be-skirted, cowboy-costumed coeds spend long hours of practice to accomplish the close-order drills and marches seen for brief moments. Their color and pageantry lend an authentic touch of college which is an integral part of the lore of Cameron. and Superior Club Activities Phi Theta Kappa, one of Cameron ' s major organizations, is constantly busy with var¬ ious public relations events. Every month of the year trips are made to high schools throughout the Southwestern part of the state to provide entertainment and give the senior class of each school a chance to meet some of the students of Cameron Col¬ lege and find out the advantages of attend¬ ing Cameron. Gary Wilson, president of Phi Theta Kappa at Cameron in 1961-62, was also the na¬ tional president of the organization. High¬ lighting the year ' s activities is the annual trip made to the National Phi Theta Kappa convention. A Cameron College ' s newspaper, The Cameron Collegian, is published once a month. In 1962 the Collegian was awarded as the best all-around newspaper of junior colleges in Oklahoma. Other awards the newspaper took at the Fall Conference, sponsored by the School of Journal¬ ism and Communications at Oklahoma State University were first in feature stories, first in editorials, second in news stories and third in sports stories. Journalistic media consists of an introduction to newspaper writing, the technique of news story writing and the kinds of news and their resources. With 9 hours being taught in jour¬ nalism, advance courses present a continuation of news writing with a study of the mechanics of newspaper production and practice in gathering and writing all kinds of news. Another aspect of journalism includes the campus yearbook, The Wichita, which is edited and assembled by journalism students. Also radio and television script is prepared and given by journalism and speech students. Student Communications and Pictured here is a scene from the Greek tragedy, Antigone, one of many dramatic, musical, and comedy productions presented annually by the drama department. Cameron Players, the dramatics club, is active in community and Fort Sill productions as well. Debate, public speaking and forensics in general are supported by inter¬ collegiate competition at various state speech tournaments. Outstanding debaters at Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State University, Southwestern State College and Central State College have gained their first experience at Cameron College. Students take command of their own affairs at Cameron College. Under a democratic studen t personnel policy, officers of the various campus clubs from the Phi Theta Kappa to the World Tape Pals plus six independent senators meet, discuss and legislate the rules for campus ac¬ tivities. Student government training is essential to the complete American citizen and leaders at Cameron often continue to exert that same leadership in other institutions. Cameron ' s new Clarence L. Davis Memorial Student Union offers rest, relaxation and refreshment to college students. The union contains a bookstore, snack bar, ball¬ room, a color television in the student lounge, snooker and pool tables and machine games. The $300,000 union was completed and opened to students in March of 1962. Social Life Sets the Pattern Highlighting Cameron ' s social calendar is the annual Military Ball which provides a varied entertainment. In past years entertainment has included Fats Beaty ' s noted band, floor shows, featuring students from Oklahoma State University, pantomimists and ventriloquists. Throngs of students gather at the innumerable social events which are sponsored by Cameron ' s many clubs. Fun nights, weekly dances and watching of colored television programs are only a few social events taking place in the modern student union. 13 Church of Christ, Baptist and Methodist faiths are keeping pace with the on-campus building by adding new bible chairs. Each of these faiths furnish student jobs and meeting places for students who seek religious inspiration. Both Church of Christ and Baptist faiths have modern new building adjoining the campus. Methodist churchmen are contemplating a new building. on Oklahoma’s Largest Cameron boasts 500 students who are enrolled in evening classes. Instruction of superior quality is offered. Instructors are represented from Harvard, Princeton, West Point, University of Pittsburgh and other universities of outstanding caliber. The evening staff is employed from three sources; Lawton Public Schools, Fort Sill and Cameron ' s day class instructors. Twenty-seven instructors are employed for the evening class session. Some of the courses offered are trigonometry, German, English, Russian, alge¬ bra, calculus, welding, shorthand, typing, business law, history and psychology. Policies of Cameron ' s administrative staff include a curriculum of study which will further educate adults in diverse professions in the Lawton community. Physical education for girls is stressed at Cameron with gym classes, badminton, riflery, bowling, archery and variety of other sports designed to provide the stamina and physique required for the modern American female. All girls are required to enroll in physical education unless a medical examination reveals they should not. Opportunities for an active campus life are plentiful for coeds at Cameron. The cheerleaders spend countless hours of practice to lead the fans in support of the Aggie athletic teams. Any girl can be nominated and elected. Four freshmen and two sophomores compose the group. Counseling for students is available from the Dean of Students and the Dean of Women. Personal problems sometimes require a friend away from home. The student personnel services offer the warm help of trained counselors to guide students through the problems of grades, dating and economic adversity. Junior College Campus Near Nature’s Wonderland Far above Cameron College and the surrounding area of Ft. Sill, Lawton and Comanche County is the huge colossas of granite called Mt. Scott. Sentinel of the picturesque Wichita mountains is this enduring mountain which was ancient when Columbus touched foot in the Western Hemisphere. Cameron College nestles at the foothills of this magic land of elk, buffalo, deer and antelope. Cougars and wild cats tread the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, unafraid. One of the great primitive parks preserved by the federal government, this wildlife refuge provides a beauty spot which is un¬ paralleled in the Great Plains. Students seeking the open life of the great West can find no spot more adequate to commune with nature, to fish, to snap photos of enduring nature than here, only 15 miles from the campus. Placid blue lakes, huge slabs of gray, red and purple granite, oak, elm and willow trees form a frame-work of natural beauty for picnics, fishing trips or just loafing in the sun. fable of Contents Dedication _ 18 Administration _ 20 Faculty _ 27 Sophomores _ 33 Freshmen _ 59 Features _ 97 Sports _ 123 Activities _141 Advertising 171 Dedication In the annals of human endeavor, defense of a nation or a way of life has always been a noble design and requires the utmost of talent, courage and loyalty from the people of any nation. In 1951, Cameron college initiated the Reserve Officer Training Corps to fulfill a specific purpose, that of providing trained leaders in a national crisis. From a humble beginning Cameron ' s ROTC has grown so that now over 300 young men are trained annually for leadership in the United States Army. Through the years since its inception, the local unit has maintained such a high quality of instruction and training that the Cameron Reserve Officers Training Corps is generally recognized as a superior group in Oklahoma and the nation. ROTC Cadets have created a tradition of leadership and honor which envelopes all phases of the training program, proficiency in marching, classwork, military etiquette and riflery. Riflery has not been the least of Cameron ROTC successes. In 1961, the ROTC rifle team won the National Championship in the National Junior College Athletic Association postal match. It is inevitable that a superior organization such as this inspires in the young men it trains, a sense of leadership and confidence invaluable in later military service or civilian life. In line with this continuing process of tradition building, in November of 1962, the Cameron ROTC was officially installed in formal ceremony by President Richard B. Burch and Lt. Col. Elton W. Duren as the Keathley Rifles. This unit within the ROTC bears the name of S Sgt. George Dennis Keathley, a former Cameron student and Congressional Medal of Honor winner who died in Italy in World War II defending the United States. With the installation of the Keathley Rifles, another proud tradition is born at Cameron college and will be nurtured and developed along with all the other proud traditions of our institution, therefore it is with pride and gratitude that the staff of the 1963 Wichita dedicate this publication to the instructors, officers and men of the Cameron College Reserve Offi¬ cers Training Corps.
