During his time here in Canton he has wit- nessed his school grow from an enrollment of 600 to about 1200 this year. It has been his pleasure to award diplomas to 522 graduates to which will be added 46 more by the 1951 senior class. Among this number are to be found those en- gaged in farming, the ministry, teaching, nursing, dkltistry and other professions, The purchase of 5 1f2 acres of land in 1935 for a play- ground. One-half of the 51850.00 was raised by the patrons and teachers, the Board matched this amount. In 1937 the new Grammar School was built. The Principal's home bought by the school for S1500.00. The Principal paid the first payment of S150,00, a personal check. In 1938 the schoolrepaired the house in and out with a new top at a cost of Sl000.00. In 1943 the house was deeded to the Trustees of the Canton Separate School District by the Principal, be- ing clear of all debts. Professor Rogers commands the re- spect of every good citizen that knows him from both races. He is a man of great tolerance, humble, modest, aggressive and optimistic, a splendid example of citizenship. This year three members were added to the faculty, making a total of thirty excluding the principal. His untiring efforts and love for boys and girls shall live forever in the minds of those who know him. tllikf., 5'ifr ?2 . Vg 1, f-41, flrfvfffyljfn r L, N ,uf 1 f.f,q WW- - V':,?Jffj?1Uf ',. .. We wish that the woricl coulci experience the peace which permeates the atmosphere here at Villa Montemar. Hence, what theme or patroness could he more appropriate than Our Lacly oi Peace? Here at the Academy we enjoy her protection over our shadow-patterned gardens, our sunny-Woociecl paths, and ahove all, over our youthful and impressive hearts. Qur prayer is that she may extenci her peace across this hattle-scarred worlci to bring aloout her promise wherein the creatures of God may live as the children of Gocl. Four iong years ago, as freshmen, we had timidiy and hopetuiiy en- tered the portals ot a new experience. Confused hy new programs and complicated schedules, at first we had a iittie difficulty in getting accus- tomed to our new environment. in time we became distinguished along with the rest of our upperciassmen as the Hwaiicing iihraries of Viiia Niontemarf, initiation with three days ot torture toiiowed, which made us quite humble and attentive to the desires ol the honorable seniors. We elected our class officers and were otlicial members of the Student Body. We spent three days of inspiring retreat under the instruction of Father Hurd and became members of the Sodality. We found our recrea- tion and activities in the G.A.A. organization, and displayed our abili- ties on Field Day. On graduation day we gave the departing seniors a breakfast. A i With a joyous and ambitious spirit, we entered our sophomore year, to discover that our hours of leisure were shortened by an increase ol homework. Under the careful supervision of our well loved faculty, we struggled through the year successfully. ln our junior year we greeted many new acquaintances to our class. It was an exciting and prosperous year. We enjoyed Tag Day, which originated in that year. Thrilling was the day when we received our class pins. We treated the seniors to a picnic at La Jolla and they in turn gave us a lovely prom which we will always remember. Finally We realized that we were members of the class that had frightened us four years ago-seniors. We were happy to have Mother Rosemary for our class teacher. This year was clustered with activities. We gave a get-to-gether dance for St. Augustine's called the Holiday Hustle. Although the rain and wind proved a little hindrance, we spent an unusually pleasant ditch day in the mountains. The actresses of our class displayed their talents in our senior play entitled Quality Street. Excitement was in the air when our rings and sweaters arrived. Fol- lowing a memorable prom, our day of final departure lay before us. Although we may never be within its walls again, the atmosphere of Villa Montemar will always linger with us. We shall never forget its gardens, its beautiful chapel, and its understanding faculty. atv- L , . .xx ELEANOR ANN ALLEN has been a member oi our Student Body on and oil for three years. She made her first appearance in our halls in her sophomore year, leit us in her junior year and we welcomed her baclc with open arms in her senior year. Petite, perlcy, and pleasant, Eleanor adds amusement to any party. She can be relied upon to donate her record collection to any and every Academy iunction, and her own recording oi HA Little Un the Lonely Sideu will always be on the first Hmusic platters, to spin around the turntable. Eleanor will attend a college in the East next September and, we are sure, she will do credit to her Alma Mater. g .,. '4v'x, , -ug. .v,,.. s 0 n , -.. X L.. Y , .E . ,,. We were fortunate to have her as our junior class secretary and proud to have her as our senior vice-president. As Valentine Brown in our senior class play, Audray scored an overwhelming suc- cess. ' MARY MAGDALENA GINGLARDI Alle-ctionately dubbed Hlvlaggien by the senior class, Magdalena is one of the fav- ored lew who have struggled twelve years through the grades ol Villa Montemar. Sur- prisingly, she bears few marlcs of the pro- longed battle and seems so reluctant to leave that she,s planning on some post- graduate worlc next tall. Maggie has proved to be the life-saving dependable of the class, whenever an activity or emergency pops up, there she is to offer the seeming impossible. Lilce Abbott and Costello, Maggie and Daphne lorm a legendary pair. Aslc any senior about Daphne, her roly-poly cousin ol three, who furnishes hall the laughs ol the class. Vveyll miss the sight ol Daphne in her levis trudging down the halls loolc- ing lor HTulla.H fMaggiei. ANASTASIA GLAVAS Here is musical talent, intelligence, de- pendability, and humor combined with blond Greet: beauty in Anna of the class ot H-45.H She has been one ot the most zealous Academy boosters, and can claim at least one other senior,s presence at the Villa as the result ot her protuse praise for all at our Alma Mater. Need anything,-a poem for the Annual, a super saleswoman for the Bond Drive, a lift downtown? Just say it loudly enough so that Anna hears, and it is as good as done. Not one to Hblow her own horn,u Anna doesn't publicize her extra-curricular work, such as the hours spent in Greet: relief worlc, her helping hand for her father in his business all summer, her position ot organ master and director ot both choirs at Church. But we believe this is our oppor- tunity to render praise where it is due, and say, Orchids to you, Anna, for being one ot' our outstanding girls? SALLY ANN HAYES Versatile, vitality-filled Sal, our gal, has brightened the Villa during the past two years. Hailing from La Mesa, uthe wilder- nessf' Sally is an enthusiast ot the outdoors, baslcet-ball, eating, and the Sodality. Her two Academy years have been paclced with activity and prestige, having been elected junior class president tor her last quarter of our junior year and Sodality prefect lor H44U and M45.H An actress ot sorts ta carry over from AGrossmont Highl, we can usually tool: to her tor enlivenment ot the drama classes and the gym court. She has the ad- ded attraction ot a very eligible brother, a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, whose pres- ence at the prom she sold to the highest bid- der! Truly Sally has been a most amusing and likeable addition to the senior class, one weyll not soon forget. MARY BARBARA HOLES Barbara joined us in her junior year. Since then she has willingly cooperated with all class plans. For the junior-senior entertainment in 1944 it was Barbara who supplied the colces and fried chiclceng and she provided the cocoa tor Senior Ditch Day. Barbarays one of the smoothest dancers among us. Ever watch her at an activity cut- ting-up with Dale or Mary Lee? Another one of her attributes is her infectious laugh- terg it begins low and ends up with every- oness chiming in. A nice girl, cooperative spirit, unique laughter, who can top that? MARY CATHLEEN JACKSON From the tar away hills of La Mesa, Cathie joined us two years ago. The Eye- browu has a hanlcering tor horses, dancing. loaiing, and Saintsmen. Vvhen asked about her post-graduate plans, she replied: l Want to do is eat, sleep, ride my horse, play tennis, swim, and tall in loved, She will probably languish in college for a few moldy years before fufilling her great am- bitions. To listen to us, no one would guess Cathie the person of responsibility Weive found her. But her Academy record proves that besides her great longing for sports and the wide open spaces, Cathie has held office as Student Body Secretary, Publicity Com- mittee chairman tor the Sodality, Holiday Hustle chairman, and Academy Correspon- dent. Hjaclcson, The Calla Lilies Are in Bloomf, has spent two successful fun-paclv ed years with us, and will, we,re confident, cheer the halls that will receive her next September. JEAN JESSOP VVe'll introduce Jean as the queen ol sports and the science labs at the Villa. She has successfully combined physical and mental gymnastics in the years she has been with us. Few girls ever shine in more than one or two fields, but Jeannie seems to have a monopoly on brains, humor, and what it talces to malce good on the court. The Vvitn of the senior class, Jean can be depended upon to brighten any dull class moments, and has a lcnaclc for getting into Hhot watern unwittingly. She has been an off-and-om boarder malcing friends of both Sisters and girls. June will marlc the sChool's loss ol its best all,-around swell girls, Jean Jessop. LORRAINE THERESA JONES Ulf you need anything, just whistle for Lorraine. She has participated in class de- bates and in the production of various senior activities. Lorraine worlcs on the Literature Committee. The Glee Club also claims her as a member. She can be seen in early morning and late afternoon bumping along with Dzajic in their little Hblaclc bug.H Her extra-curricular interests include a certain Saintman and his car, and occos- ional hours at the telephone company say- ing, HNumber pullezef' DALF MARIE KIEPLER ARLETTE JANE KAUFIVIAN Two years ago a sligimt, lmlonde girl made lmer appearance in time class oi 715. PATRICIA ELLEN NICNAMARA Pat, the Hpoet laureateu ot the upper- classmen, joined us this year and has been a valuable addition to the class and Stu- dent Body. She has been unseliish with her time and has tatcen an active part in all school activities. Her ettorts as a member ot the Literature Committee in the Sodality have resulted in a better Sodality organiza- tion and a more enjoyable reading list tor the Sodalists. Patgs poetry has brightened our English classes no end and we are all inspired when she reads one of her poems. tn our senior play no one was more suited for the part ot Miss Willoughby than Pat. BLAN CHE YOLANDA MEZA Amicable, agreeable Blanche is always smilingly boasttul ot her Uswell tamilyn and displaying snap-shots to prove the state- ments. Arriving in the freshman year, Blanche has been a staunchupholder ot the Stu- dent Body and the Sodality. Blanche, a boolcworm on occasions, would like to become a secretary and per- haps an interpreter. We lmow she will spread the same joy and benevolence among her many future friends as she has here at Villa Montemar. BARBARA MARY MULHERN Blonde, energetic Barbara is tiie proud possessor oi an everlasting store oi pep that manages to wear us all out. HBabsH proved herself invaluable during the practice of tile Christmas play. Every- time a line, a word, or a sentence was tor- gotten Barbara, acting as prompter, would immediately come to tile rescue. Sire hopes to join the nursing profession upon receiving ber diploma but tbe abun- dant use of vitamin pills may liave to be employed. More power to Barbara and success in building up ber constitution. NANCY NASON For seven successful years Nancy has been a student at Villa Montemar. She is iovial, gay, gleeiul, and vivacious. On top oi all that siie has a superb sense of lmu- mor. Because of ber dependability, Nan,' was chosen to be cilairman of time senior class paper drive. Thanks to ber steadfast- ness, we came out on top. Nancy gave a semi-formal in February that was time sensation of the year. The Social Service will claim Nancy up- on graduation and we lmow that, as al- ways, siie will be an enthusiastic worlcer. KATHLEEN ELEANOR OWENS Kathleen Gwens, the horsewoman Hsu- perhu ot the senior class, has stretched her ample selt into many varied and wondrous tields. Kathleen is an amhitious and faith- tul memloer ot the Sodality. She was also in the cast ot the Christmas play and has heen a strong alto in the Glee Cluh tor tour years. ' As the head ot the much called upon uLost and Found department, Kathleen,s name has hecome a password when any- thing from a pencil to a watch wanders away. SHIRLLY RU FH PARKS Shirley Parlcs our more than capable ASB. president has been with us tor three years,-years packed with tun and hard worlc. Shirley is a pretty tunny gal when you get her moving. She was a member ot the basket-hall and volley-hall teams dur- ing her sophomore year. A heautitul violinist, Shirley played first violin in the orchestra and has hlended her heautitul soprano voice to lceep the Glee Cluh on pitch. All ot these activities, how- ever, have not hindered Shirley,s ahility tor acquiring A,s. Even after hurning the Umid- night oil' 'on homeworlc, Shirley can always he depended on to write exquisite verses and impeccahly beautiful descriptions. Her superh handling ot a tough student hody has won the admiration ot all, faculty included, and l am sure her sterling ex- ample has heen indelihly stamped on the hearts ot all. Vve were tortunate to have Father Kern as our retreat master. Father gave us three conferences each ot the three days and discussd such subjects as triendship-hoth with God and man-the religious state ot lite, and the application ot the command- ments in our everyday activities. Atter each conference we were lett with meditative thoughts, which each girl pondered over between conterences, stations. visits, and spir- itual readings. On those three days we wallced hand-in-hand with Christ, spolte to Him ttrom the depths ot our hearts, and consoled Him in His sorrow. We ended our retreat each a hetter person, a more thoughtful person, a person with a greater love tor the Holy Family. Making up the foundation and most important part ot the Sodality are the com- mittees. These total six in all: Qur Ladyys ttwo divisionslg Eucharistic: Apostolic: Literature: publicity: and Mental Prayer. Each committee has worlced long and hard. To give you a hird,s-eye view ot their worlc, we mention a lew ot the things they have accomplished. The Apostolic committee toolc over the taslc ot tilting hundreds ol' Christmas stoclcings tor the poor: raising money for Pagan hahies in China: sponsoring a drive tor rosaries tor the servicemeng and arranging all material used in Vocation month. Qur Ladyts committee contributed everything from starting a Triduum to Our Lady ot Fatima to selling Christmas cards, to Uputting overn the Family Daily Rosary. The Eucharistic committee upheld its name lay encouraging a tine turnout tor the Handmaids ot the Blessed Sacrament reception, and encouraging the Enthronement ot homes to the Sacred Heart and Night Adoration. The Literature committee worlced hard spreading devotion hy handling Catholic Press Month and lceeping Catholic liter- ature in circulation. The Mental prayer committee submitted an original mental prayer at each weelcly Sodality meeting. The Publicity committee put up all lcinds ot' signs, posters, and reminders tor the girls to see. These, then, are our ever-willing, ever-worlv ing committees, who deserve and justly receive recognition tor their ettorts.
