Opening 3 4 Student Life re it is, the new Student Life section of your '88 yearbook. This part was created just for you — the student. Your life at school is a lot more than clubs and sports and dances. It also includes greeting friends on the first day of school, trying to open your locker, leisure moments at break, in the cafeteria or lounging outside, as well as your work each day in the classroom, doing lab experiments and typing assignments. In fact, during the short four minutes we have to pass to classes, it is impossible to get through the corridors without running into someone. Because there are so many people at CRHS, we have devoted the next 82 pages to showing you just who these important people are. We end the PEOPLE section with the faculty. What would we do with- out them? Each member is unique in his or her own way, providing in- sight, direction and support for C-R students. The Class of 1988 would especially like to thank four special teachers: Mrs. Nancy Sturdee for her guidance, humor and friendship in the twenty-seven years she has taught at CRHS; Mr. Jon Potter for preparing us to enter high school and then for coming to high school with us to continue in our preparation; Mrs. Joan Heimann for serving as co- advisor to our class and for creating many new educational experiences for all levels of students; and espe- cially Mrs. Pat Hurlburt for serving as our co-advisor as well as providing the leadership, inspiration and ideas for the three hall decoration contests that our class has won. Your ded- ication and sensitivity to this class is greatly appreciated and highly ad- mired. With all of your help, we made it! Above all, thank you faculty for being our friends. To Students and Staff: Congratulations! Each of you is a very important part of Camden- Rockport High School, one of the finest schools in the State of Maine. C.R.H.S. is not just an outstanding school with a quality academic pro- gram; a superlative co-curricular program; and an exciting athletic pro- gram. It is a way of life. It is a way of life where people care about others; a way of life that aspires people to dreams they haven't dreamed before; a way of life that encourages people to reach beyond their best abilities. C.R.H.S. is not just bricks and mortar, it is you! You are important! Each of you in your own way has made a valuable contribution to that special way of life that is Camden-Rockport High School. State Champions THE ACTS The arts are a top priority for most students at Camden-Rockport High School. Over one-half of the student body is involved in band, chorus or the dramatics department. While many of these students are actually performing, a great many more are working behind the scenes, making sets, costumes or directing one-act plays. So, for the first time, the yearbook staff presents a separate section devoted to the cultural side of life at CRHS. Welcome and enjoy! The cast gathers around Lori McMahon The Arts Divider s«i e 4K1IM® H0AKTTT The 1987 production of the musical The Music Man was definitely a suc- cess enjoyed by both the students and the commu- nity. It was an amusing story set in a small town in Iowa called River City. A city-slicker named Pro- fessor Harold Hill (Sean Reed) came to town in or- der to con the unsuspect- ing citizens. However, a snag occurred in his plan when he fell in love with Marian, the town's librar- ian and piano teacher (Jennifer Boobar). This musical involved nearly fifty students at Camden- Rockport High School, in- cluding cast and crew, all of whom were excellent and made the 1987 mu- sical worth all the effort that went into its produc- tion. Bravo cast and crew! 140 Music Man ▼ Jason Arey serenades Kristy Zeiler with Shaboopie. ◄ Noah Barnes waits for his cue. ▲ The quartet impresses the audience with their talent ▲ Lori McMahon portrays the Statue of Liberty in a whole new way. Music Man 141 3SAS© 13£ WZmWMi What would happen if many of the world's won- derful composers, philos- ophers, writers, artists and political thinkers of an historical era all met for one evening at a par- ty? The communities of Camden and Rockport found out last spring when the Baroque Festi- val was designed and presented by students at Camden-Rockport High School under the direc- tion of John Gelsinger and Joan Heimann. The Baroque period, stretch- ing from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, was one that was right in the arts. To the right, Amanda Wright and Chris Lammi can be seen dancing a minuet, a waltz-like dance very popular then. The eve- ning was eventful and a lot of fun for the entire au- dience. ▼ People listen to the words of Peter the Great ► Noah Barnes, as Sir Isaac Newton, spurts forth a few words of wisdom ► And then in walks Handel, aka Jon Armbrecht to party. This year is a year off. Next year, I will go to a college in an inner town, Kairouan, which is about sixty kilometers away from my coastal town. I will study English in this university for four years in order to earn a certif- icate that will enable me to teach in a high school. After that, I may carry on my studies further in or- der to become a profes- sor. This year in the Unit- ed States is very helpful to me since I'm learning a lot of things both inside and outside the school. My name is Agnes Dupuis and I'm from Tou- louse, France. I've al- ready finished high school in France by pass- ing the Baccalaureate which is a very important exam taken at the end of high school. I decided to be an exchange student in the United States be- cause I didn't really know what to do after high school. I felt as though I needed to become more mature and to gain more experience before mak- ing important decisions in my life. It's been won- derful to discover differ- ent people and customs, and to make new friends. When I regret- fully go back to France, I'll probably attend en- gineering school, after a two-year program called Math. Sup. My year in the United States has given me the expe- riences I wanted and has been one of the best years of my life. I'm sure I will return someday. My name is Osborne Osse Von Waldegg and I'm from Marsta, Sweden. I'm seventeen years old and live in a small town with a population of 20,000 right outside of the capitol of Sweden, Stock- holm. I've finished nine years of compulsory school and last year I at- tended the first of the four years in a science sec- ondary school. I thought that after ten years I was very bored with school so I decided to come to the United States. I hope to get more independent and mature. And, of course, I hope to learn to speak English fluently. In my spare time, I'm into music and team handball. When I return home, I'm going back to school for at least three more years. After that, I don't know. Three jobs that interest me are lawyer, civil engineer and journalist. I also want to advise people about ex- change students: talk to them about anything. Somebody caring can lighten up an entire day. ▲ Agnes Dupuis — France. M'Hamed Kriia — Tunisia, Os- borne Von Waldegg — Sweden. Students and staff at Camden-Rockport High School would like to thank the many area businesses and individuals who, through their financial support, make this 1988 Navigator yearbook possible. Over 230 advertisements were purchased this year, making this the largest number of sup- porters that the yearbook has ever had.
