978 CAMDEN-ROCKPORT HIGH SCHOOL FRONT: Mr. Drons, Mrs. Hcimann, M. Simomon. MIDDLE: M. Hughes, D. Pease, M. Grey, J. Ferraiolo, J. Wyper, S. Sawyer, D. Mil- stead, E. Flanagan, P. Hopkins, K. Oakes, B. Jones. BACK: P. Guise ley, P. Parker, L. Misner, R. Lunn, J. Sorenson, S. Wight, L. Peters, A. Snapp. MISSING: T. Freeman. C. Furman, D. Hollis, K. Kelley, D. Leavitt, J. Mitchell. H. Montgomery, S. Nutt, J. Olson, T. Rollins, D. Shields. M. Staples, M. Winchenbach. Yearbook Staff Admiral Michael Drons moved the NAVIGA- TOR operations out of the bomb shelter into the cultured confines of the library this year - thanks to Mrs. Joan Heimann who came on board as co-advisor. Despite the better light, less dampness, and a gentle female touch - the work of turning out what you hold in your hands required many long hours by a dedicated staff. Mary Simonton assumed command master- fully and had the able assistance of her deck officers - Paige Parker, Pam Guiseley, John Ferraiolo, and Erin Flanagan. Jan Sorenson led the ad department and Barri Jones controlled subscriptions. And many others filled the ranks. We laughed, panicked, cropped and tried to capture a year on paper. We hope you'll find it seaworthy. Dedication: Mr. E. L. Gruener E. L. Gruener has a unique approach to leaching. His daily lesson plan wails for us to caich up 10 it. His stu- dents are allowed to exhaust topics without feeling that the discussion will be cut off at its height ... or even its depths. To many of us he has been a true friend in many ways. Perhaps he has been understanding when we have explained what really happened to that book report or take-home test, or perhaps he has spent a little extra time helping us. as well as himself, to see the light through our own opinions and questions. He is sensitive toward his students and their opinions. Some of us will remember the question What is the purpose of life? and the understanding we gained of our own lives and the untimely ends of others' lives. We thank him. E. L. Gruener (even though we don't know what the L stands for) is as unforgettable as the amazing sea crea- ture he told us about. And we traveled with his tales of being stranded on the windy peak of a roof, on a bell buoy, or at the top of a seemingly endless mountain watching one ski slither down the snow-covered slope. For future students we offer this suggestion: don't try to note every word he may say: you are destined to miss something. Just listen and he'll tell you about life. As we finish our high school career at C-R. we want to show our gratitude to him and to wish him a continued happy and successful life. Therefore, we, the class of 1978, dedicate the 1978 NAVIGATOR to our favorite advocate of ' 60 Minutes.'’ Mr. E. L. Gruener. SENIORS KAREN L. ONE-ACT PLAYS The CAMDEN HERALD’S head- line proclaimed; Drama Club’s Plays Stun Audience.” And its review began: The audience at St. Thomas’ Parish House was almost never quite sure when to laugh as the Camden-Rockport High School Drama Club pre- sented its first-ever selection from the theater of the absurd. Whether laughing or not, the audience enjoyed the four one- act plays on February 14 and 15. And the troupers went on to CSD on March 2 with their magic. One of the plays, FABLES, went on to Rockland for a performance at the Maine State Principals' Association Regional One-Act Play Contest on March 14. The C-R Field Hockey team's record was 7-7 with Liz Nelson leading the scoring and Karen Heal having the most assists. Edna Annis, outstanding center halfback, led the defense. This year's team worked very well together and every girl made a major con- tribution to the team’s success. C-R finished 7th place in Eastern Maine. The team lost to Belfast in the tournaments by the score of 1-0 in an extremely well-played game. JV FIELD HOCKEY SEATED: L. Bibeau. T. Clinton, P. Libby. J. Richard. C. Andrews, J. Drinkwater, K. The 25 members, most of whom had never played the sport before, worked together as a unit right from the start and came away with a record of 6-2-4. Leading scorers for the team were Freshmen Patty Libby and Julie Drinkwater. Goa- lie Lita Cunis, with help from terrific halfbacks and fullbacks, allowed only 3 goals to be scored by opposing teams all season. These girls, with their overflow of enthusiasm and desire, have proved that the Field Hockey teams of C-RHS will be hard to top in the coming years. JV 80CCER The JV soccer team had a very respectable record of 4 wins, 3 ties, and 5 losses in their 1977 season. The Windjammers also won key games over arch rivals Georges Valley and Medomak Valley and played well against outstanding teams from Nokomis and Waterville. Though it is difficult to single out players for individual recognition, some players from this very capable group do deserve special com- mendation. Among this year's team standouts who should help Mr. Palmer's team next year are Jeff Perkins, Richard Carpentier, Chris Morong, and Steven Stone. 1st ROW: T. Dyer. E. VonSaltza, D. O’Connell, A. VARSITY SOCCER A veteran varsity soccer team saw the Jammers have another fine season, as they won the Knox-Lin- coln Championship again, and placed 8th in the Eastern Maine Class A. Alan Snapp centered up a fine defense crew that only allowed 18 goals in 16 games. Taylor Martens was the main striker up front, as he pounded home 6 goals and assisted on 5 others. The 9-5-2 Jammers saw the season end in the playoffs, as they were knocked off 3-1 by Fort Kent. Richard Gross got the Jammers’ only playoff goal on a penalty kick. W. Dubiis BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY E. Our other senior, Theresa Raven, also had a fine sea- son overall. With just three seniors graduating, Coach Vautour has built a potential tour- nament-bound team next year. GIRLS' JV BASKETBALL This season the J.V. team was a very young team made up of 11 freshmen and 4 soph- omores. Although the overall record was 7-11. the Jammers lost 5 games by a total of 12 points, evidence that the season easily could have gone the other way. Coach Gilbey attributed these close losses mainly to a woeful 52 7o foul-shooting percentage for the season. The bulk of the scoring was done by senior Co-Captains Taylor Martens, Frank Steams, and sen- ior Mark Bucky Beale. Beale and Manens were dominant at both backboards, as they were the mainstays of the Windjammers' rebounding corps. Yet, a rain- storm wiped out one meet and a snow storm can- celled another. The boys were top competition for any alpine team. Nordic events brought a weakness to the surface, but one that we hope will be changed next year. The boys finished fifth overall in the regionals. Jumping and cross-country brought them down from an excellent show in alpine. Marc Smith took first overall in Giant Slalom in the regionals and went on to take the state in G.S. Next year’s team, despite the loss of Marc Smith and Peter Joyce, looks very promising. GYMNASTICS C-R’s Gymnastics team had a very success- ful 14-3 season - includ- ing winning the Knox- Lincoln League Champi- onship with a high score of 83.85. At this meet, top honors were captured by Tia Spearin, Carrie Gaudette, Julia Misner, Terry Marsh, and Kathie Williams. Tia, Carrie, and Terry also qualified for the State Meet and Julia for the Regionals. With several young team members gaining expe- rience, C-R should have a very strong team in the next few years. FRONT: H. Moody. S. Oxton, B. Jones, J. Misner, G. Desrosicrs, T. Spearin. S. Frye, T. Marsh. B. Jones, Mgr. STANDING: Coach K. Lerctte, J. Tyler. K. Williams. M. French. A. Kilgore. C. Gaudette. Y. Asst. Coach Paul Quijano. The wrestling team posted a 6-9 record in the ever- improving Coastal League this year, finishing in the middle of the league standings. Senior co-captains Kevin Pendleton and Gene Kelly led the team with 14 wins each. Neither was pinned during the regular sea- son. The year was highlighted by two wins over arch-rival Georges Valley. Other than Kelly and Pendleton, Sen- iors contributing to the success of the team included Jim Gray and Bob Kulikowski. Gray, in the first year of wrestling, did a fine job at 167 pounds, while Kulikow- ski, also a first-year man, stepped into the 155-pounds slot midway through the season and won several key matches. The team will have 12 lettermen returning next sea- son, and should have another good year. GOLF THE CHAMP The golf team had an outstanding season considering the loss of three starters the previous year. The team record in '77 was 12-3 including a sudden-death playoff for the Knox-Lincoln League championship, C-R being defeated by Medomak Valley by the close score of 3-2. Kip Hurd led the Windjammers with a 17-1 record during the year and placed 2nd in the State. Chris Klem finished at 8-4 while Frank O'Hara pulled through at 10-3. The golf team is looking forward to another outstanding year in '78 with their veteran starters. WHAT? BASEBALL KNEELING: B. Bricker, Mgr. D. Shields, J. Dean, S. Russo, C. Manning, T. Bricker. STANDING: Coach Cunis, J. Restin, M. Carlson, I. Snowden, G. Bryant, D. Hollis, F. Steams, R. Johnson, After five years of average and almost” seasons, Coach Bill Cunis finally realized the long-awaited pinnacle of success - the League Championship. C-R's Varsity Baseball team certainly enjoyed both an exciting and successful season in '77. Not only did they win the Knox-Lincoln Championship for the first time, but they also defeated Class A powerhouses Cony and Gardiner. The 'Jammers climbed to 6-0 early in the season and ended with a league record of 8-2 to win the K-L title (14-6 overall). Good pitching performances turned in by Steve Russo, Jeff Dean and Tom Morong. Contributing to the exceptional hitting were Gibby Bryant, Tom Morong, and Steve Russo. C-R was defeated by Lisbon in the playoffs. Nev- ertheless, C-R hopes to repeat their K-L victory in '78 with most of the team returning, many of them three year veterans. J.V. BASEBALL The 1977 JV Baseball team enjoyed an excellent season. Pitching seemed to be the weak spot at the beginning but proved to be more and more effective as the season progressed. Pitching fine games were Chris Manning, Mike Gushee, Mike Dodd, and Jeff Landwehr. The team was led by the hot bats and quick gloves of Bennett Bricker and Chris Manning. Steady fielding by the rest of the team rounded out a successful 10-5 sea- son. FIRST ROW: Bennett Bricker, E. Galvan, F. Collins, C. Manning. SECOND ROW: Coach Ridley, Sprout Gushee, R. Stur- dee, G. Smith. LAST ROW: R. Carpentier, S. Cameron, L. Jones, J. Landwehr, M. Dodd. SOFTBALL C-R began the season with a very inexperienced team with only three seniors starting. Most of the other starters will be returning in '78 as Juniors or Sen- iors. This inexperience cost them a couple key games early in the season, but they finished with an 11-4 record led by the duo of Hardy and Butler with Kathy Bower and Kathy Butler turning in fine hitting work. It was the first year of the State Softball Tournament, and although C-R did not make the tourney, the team has the dis- tinction of beating tournament finalists Medomak Valley late in the season. FRONT ROW: B. Boynton. K. Butler. K. Hardy. L. Nelson, N. Aylward. SECOND ROW: Coach Crockett, M. Crabtree, C. Feener. K. Heal, T. Raven. LAST ROW: Mgr. K. Chater. L. Curtis, E. Annis, D. Davee. FRONT ROW: Coach Segal. B. Pooler. L. Wentworth, S. Pease. C. Esancy. A. Wadsworth. SECOND ROW: M. Syme, J. Williams. D. Brodis, M. Pendleton. D. Butler, L. Raven. BACK ROW: M. Mosher, L. Curtis. S. Vanorse, J. Fish, D. Vanorse, C. McFarland. The team got off to a great start scoring 58 runs in their open- ing game against Wiscasset who made the final score 58-29. It is difficult to single out individual contributions because every member put in their own effort. Special mention, how- ever, must be made of the pitcher-catcher duo of Debbie Vanorse and Lita Curtis. The team finished out the season with a record of 5-4. Out of this group Coach Crockett will be picking up some fine Varsity material for the '78 season. A Beneath the Stars io, ra per couple jervior FACULTY MATHEMATICS MR. SIMS MR.
