NAVIGATOR Where we are. Sometimes The brick arches led to a room like a bubble, That broke when you entered it And sometimes to a fallen leaf. We got crazy with emotion, showing how much we knew. 5 Yearbook Staff It Was . . . It's their baby, folks . . . ... a year that was hectic, fun, frustrating and challenging - a year, an experience, like many others. Take a new advisor, a couple of most able greenhorns and put them in a subterranean concrete bomb shelter at odd hours - stir- ring occasionally - and watch for results. You have them in your hands. We hope you like it. Despite soccer and field hockey, myriad English meet- ings, conflicting schedules, relentless deadlines, and a touch of evening sickness - it all came together. The co-editors, Lori Renn and Peter Elliott, learned a lot and in the process created a book - a history of a year in a small but special Maine high school. They struggled valiantly with layouts and copy, class mottoes and ballots, personali- ties and picas. And they had help. Mary Simonton led the subscription drive - despite the corny PA announcements. Jan Sorenson bailed us out on advertising. Chipper missed the photo but was there to help on baby pictures. In fact, all those cheery folks in the photo at the right did their part. They have the school's thanks. Lori Peters, Lori Renn, Nancy Martin, Invisible Mary Simonton, Barri Jones, Jan Sorenson, Peter Elliott, Stella Nutt, Karen Kelly, Mark Hall, Sandy Hamalainen, Becky Butterfield, Holly Frye Hill It, . - I wonder if that’s really a dirty picture? 6 Dedication Mrs. Mary Stinson Schooling - not to mention education - does not stop as we step out of the classroom. For four years our lives have been touched by a woman who has never even thought of herself as a teacher. But we have, nonethe- less, learned much from her. We have learned that smiles help to brighten the worst of days, that every person likes to be called by name, that any sit- uation - no matter how hectic and confused - can be handled in a calm, understanding manner, ’’e have learned from her the alue of being organized, of aving a quiet voice, of trusting thers. How many of us have not sorrowed a lunch ticket, asked to use her phone, or received a late slip with a reassuring smile? In the years ahead, we may forget a bit of history, math, English and science, but we will always remember the kind woman who keeps CRHS running - Mrs. Mary Stinson. SPOR TS C-R Field Hockey The varsity field hockey record was 9 wins, 4 losses, and 0 ties. We finished the season in sixth place in the Eastern Maine standings. C-R scored 31 goals in 13 games, while the opposition scored a total of 14 goals against C-R's very strong defense. Sarah Bixler led the C-R defense with a great year as goalee. Sue Christie and Beth Boynton also contributed strong defense in the fullback positions. Sandy Hamalainen set up many goals from her center halfback position with her quick stick and powerful drive. As C-R's right wing, Polly Bell used her great sticking to bring the ball down the field. Left wing Lori Renn and halfback Tina Wolter also aided the team with fine periods ot skillful play. Karen Hardy was voted our most valuable player. Karen, a truly outstanding center forward, was C-R's top scorer for three years. These seniors will all be missed. Each one con- tributed her individual skill to make every victory a true team effort. The underclassmen also contributed greatly to the team's success and will make a fine nucleus for next year's team. KNEELING: P. Bell, S. Bixler, L. Renn, T. Wolter, S. Akers, L. Richard. Hopewell’ Cnarh DAnforth In spite of their riding to away games in the school’s garbage truck, the C-R JV team was ranked 1 in the Knox-Lincoln League. Its impressive record for the 1976 season was 11 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. Driving in 21 of C- R's 25 goals were the big scorers of the forward line: Jenny Bell, Debbie Davee, Liz Nelson ( spark of the offense), Heidi Vannah, and Debbie McIntyre. Debbie gained val- _____ uable experience this season as a frequent varsity substitute. Thanks to this team's solid defense, only 6 goals were scored against C-R. As one of the outstanding newcomers to the game, Edna Annis supported both the offense and the defense with excep- tional speed and a strong drive. Both halfbacks and fullbacks repelled the opposition by many excellent saves and clears: how- ever, the most valuable defensive player was Nancy Aylward. An early transfer from the front line, Nancy did a super job throughout the season, especially in the last three games which she all but saved for C-R. Truly each member consistently gave her all to the team effort - without their spirit and unity, this large and previ- ously inexperienced team never could have made the 1976 season such a great success. The Girls' Cross Country Team . . . . . . participated in the first Girls’ Cross Country State Meet and finished fifth out of seventeen teams. In the course of the season, the number one spot on the team alternated among senior Kirsten Barfod (the team's MVP), sophomore Donna Hart, and freshman Marie Crabtree. Freshman Vicki Underhill consist- ently placed a strong third or fourth for the team. Swapping off on the number five spot all season were sophomore Laura Whitson and freshman Judy Aldus. This young team gained valuable experience this year and finished the season with a successful 48 win and 16 loss record. FRONT: D. Hart, M. Gallace, J. Aldus, Coach Crockett, V. Underhill, K. The Boys' Cross Country Team . . . . . . had a good blend of underclassmen and upperclass- men with a lot of potential this season. Sophomore Andy Cavanaugh and freshman Keryn Laite consistently ran one and two on the team with the three seniors, Don Kelley, Robert Walden, and Terry Crabtree, forming a solid three, four, and five block. A good indicator of well-dis- tributed team effort was shown when it came time for the team to select its MVP. Rather than trying to break a tie, awards were given to both Don Kelley and Andy Cava- naugh. With most of the team back next season, we are hoping to improve on this year's fine record of 32 wins and 17 losses. . A - KNEELING: P. Eddy, L. Thomas, S. King, D. La Combe, B. Bricker, J. The 1976 Windjammer soccer team started out the season with six veterans on the squad - Mike Stone, Jeff Dean, Dennis LaCombe, Steve Russo, Peter Elliott, and Roman MacDonald. With some fine talent up from the JV's and freshman Bennett Bricker in the goal, the season looked quite promising. Our first game of the season was a real thriller at Medomak Valley with the 'Jammers coming out on top by the score 4-3 in OT. Fol- lowing two losses - to Nokomis 1-0 and Mt. View 1-0 - we were back on the winning road with a 4-0 win over Wiscasset. The real high point of our season came during our eighth game. Our record was 3-4 going into this game with rival Waterville. The Panthers were handed a crushing defeat by the score of 6-0. In our last seven games we won five, lost one, and tied one. We closed out our regular season with an impres- sive 3-2 win over a very tough Yarmouth team. For the seventh consecutive year, our team entered the play-offs. We played Ellsworth and were defeated by the score of 1-0. With some fine talent returning, the Windjammers are looking forward to the '77 season. Varsity Soccer FRONT: B. McGowan, F. Collins, G. Boys'JV Soccer 1976 was the year of Nokomis for the J-V soccer team. After suffering a 7-2 opening game home loss to the Warri- ors, the team avenged that loss with a 1-0 victory over Nokomis on their field. The improvement suggested by these scores characterized the team’s growth over the season. At midseason the team record against J-V competi- tion was 1-4. In the second half of the season the team was undefeated with a record of 3 victories and 2 ties to finish the year at 4-4-2. While all team members contributed, two members stand out for their efforts. Kip Hurd proved to be a stalwart at goalie, and Chris Dean provided the hustle to lead the team at midfield. The C-R Wrestling Team compiled an outstanding record this season, going from only three wins in 1975-76 to a best ever mark of 10-7 this year. The team was led by senior co-captains Dennis LaCombe and Rick Curtis, who between them came up with thirty wins. Junior Kevin Pendleton was another excellent wrestler, compiling a 13-2-1 record. The highlights of the year included two wins each over Lisbon and Wiscasset and a victory against Medomak Valley, the first win against the Waldoboro squad since the team's inception three years ago. The team came on very strong towards the end of the season, commented coach Rick Hamel. I predict that next year we’ll open a few eyes around the Coastal League.” Additional assets to the team were seniors Ken Borzoni, John Kelly, both first year men. Other wrestlers contributing to the success of the season were junior Gene Kelly, sophomores John Restin and Jon Tucker, and freshmen Ken Morton, Bob Rankin, Greg Rollins and Ben Tolman. FRONT: J. She is a high scorer for C-R in vaulting. Junior Grace Desrosiers has been out a lot of the season with a broken knee cap. Sophomores Kathy Williams and Laura Lang- horne have improved greatly and are scoring well for C-R. This year’s team has a very capable group of Freshmen. Girls' Varsity Basketball Led by Senior co-captains Karen Hardy and Sue Christie, the Varsity girls' basketball team made the Eastern B tournaments in Bangor after a slow start due to inexperience. As the only two lettermen returning from last year's Knox-Lincoln League championship team, Hardy and Christie helped to lead the inexperienced Windjammers through a 1-3 record before Christmas vacation; after vacation the girls compiled a 9-3 record including upset victories over Western Class A Morse, Medomak Valley, and Lincoln Academy. Although four girls will be lost to graduation, seven will return next year. With the added experience of tournament games we will try to improve on this year's record. In Eastern Maine Class B Quarter Final tournament action, the C-R girls defeated Belfast, a team twice victorious over the Windjammers in regular season contests. 104 KNEELING: D. Davee, N. Captain Jeff Dean was a key starter; he and guard Steve Russo were deadly with their outside jump shots. Howard Holmes, Taylor Martens, Frank Borzoni, and Steve Bowman were CR's muscle under the boards in picking up rebounds. Tom Morong was one of the most consistent ballplayers with timely scoring, good rebounding and tough defense. Tom Berry and Frank Stearns came off the bench to play strong defense and score clutch hoops. Rick Johnson and Bruce Pease rounded out the squad to help out with some fine outside jumpshots. Stats. The Alpine team was very competitive in all meets and finished first in the Eastern Regional competition held at the Camden Snow Bowl. The team missed third place by a slim 8 points in the Regionals due to disappointing finishes in cross-country and jumping. A fourth place was not good enough to put them in competition at the state meet. Next year's team will have suffered the loss of three seniors, Willy Eddy, Peter Hall and Terry Crabtree, but will take on the slopes with this year's added experi- ence due to the excellent conditions behind them. no FRONT: W. The heavy snowfall this year got the season off to an early start with practice at the Snow Bowl before Christmas vaca- tion and more cross-country skiing all season than any previous year. The team was well-balanced with seven skiers in slalom and giant slalom vying constantly for the top four places on the team. In cross-country also, seven skiers were alternately filling the top four spots. It was a very good year for seniors Polly Bell and Dody Laite, both strong lead- ers in the alpine events. The 1975-1976 varsity baseball team had an outstanding year, with a league record of 8 wins and 4 losses, and an overall record of 14 wins and 6 losses - the best C-R record in years. The fine pitching of Steve Russo, Jeff Dean, and Tom Morong, along with the timely hitting of Paul Smyth, Darryl Long, Mike Stone, and Leroy Alexander, comple- mented one of our strongest defensive teams ever. The 'Jammers held first place after a key win over Lincoln Academy in the last week of the season. But then we suffered consecutive losses to Mt. View, Medomak Valley, and Mt. View again, to be edged out of the race. Paul Smyth and Darryl Long were the only seniors on the team and both contributed greatly to the Windjammers. As team captain, Smyth was voted MVP by his teammates for the second straight year. With most of the team returning, C-R looked forward with great eagerness to the 1976-1977 season. SITTING: T. The 1976 Season Was. . . . an eventful one for our team. For the first half of the season, we were so injury-prone that we never had our entire starting team at one time. Then just when it seemed we would get it all together, Karen Hardy went into the hospital to have her tonsils out. Even with all our problems, we ended the season with an 18-8 record. With only two starters graduating we looked forward to an exciting year in 1977. Then, for the first time there would be a state softball championship. This would provide an excellent opportunity for us to see how other teams in the state compare with our Windjammers Varsity Softball 116 KNEELING: L. Starrett, B. Boynton, V. Drake, K. Wiley, K. Hardy, L. Nelson. STANDING: Coach Crockett, K. Butler, M. Syme, K. Heal, D. Thurston, E. Annis, M. Simonton. JV Softball SITTING: J. Rainfrette, T. Raven, N. Aylward, W. Ludwig, D. Davee, J. Jenkins, J. Sorenson, D. Kimball, J. Williams. BENCH: L. Wentworth, G. Clark, J. Berube, J. Fish, Coach Segal, T. Wil- liams, L. Berube, J. Gushee, S. Jones. The Girls'JV Team . . . . . . had a fine season with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses, scoring a total of 139 runs in 7 games while giving up only 110. Supporting the strong pitcher-catcher duo of Nancy Aylward and Julie Rainfrette was a capable fielding, hit- ting, and running team. Defensive stalwarts included Debbie Davee and Jenny Jenkins, with Janice Williams, Theresa Raven, and Jan Sorenson wielding the big bat on offense. Gin- ger Clark served well as team manager, provid- ing ice-water and Kool- aid for the home games. Congratulations to the team for a good effort and for successfully pull- ing off the legendary double steal. the beautiful belles of the ball. . . 120 FACULTY 121 ADMINISTRA TION 122 DR. MARX MR.
